  • If you want to learn how to unclog a kitchen sink this video will help. I guarantee you can do this yourself and likely save $75-$95.
For more home improvement tips visit www.homerepairtutor.com/đŸ‘đŸŒ
The first step is to check the P-Trap for clogs. This likely is the culprit. Grab a 5 gallon bucket and place it under the P-Trap. It's a good idea to place towels under the bucket.
Slowly turn the P-Trap slip nuts counterclockwise. Be careful, water might rush out from the P-Trap. I recommend using a 5 gallon bucket to catch all the water that's up in the kitchen sink.
In this video you'll see the clog was just in the drain, I didn't even have to do anything to remove the debris.
But what if your clog isn't in the P-Trap or drain? It's likely in the wall pipe and you need to remove it mechanically via a hand auger.
Ridgid's Power Spin is a great hand auger that costs only $40. You can use it by hand or via a power drill. If you unclog your kitchen sink just once it justifies the purchase of the Power Spin.
You can also use this tool for clogs in your bathroom sink, tub, or shower.
Press down on the Power Spin trigger and feed the auger into the wall pipe. Spin the Power Spin until you clear the clog and reverse your procedure to pull it up out of the pipe.
Watch the video for all the details including how to put your pipes together without getting any leaks

I like to put the sink stoppers in the sinks so the water doesn't pour out when you unhook the drain. Then release the stoppers once the bucket is under the sink with the pipes off. 👍

The problem with using an auger is that sharp tip CAN puncture pipes, which happened when I had a rooter company come out to clear my drain. Then the pipe leaked just enough that we didn't find out about it for a couple years, and the water leaking had rotted out my kitchen cabinets, which created black mold in the walls... an extremely costly and stressful disaster

Thanks for the great video on using the Rigid Power Spin. I just purchased one and am getting ready to use it. Before buying it, I used a manual snake - the type without a canister. The "slip-tube" handle is really hard to twist, so I couldn't really get any torque on it. I hit a "T" fitting about 4-feet under and it was a real struggle to get past it. I finally did, only to be foiled again about 10-feet down at another T. That was the end of the road for my manual snake. Try as I might, the manual auger would go no further. Unfortunately, the clog is past that. I'm hoping that using a drill with the power spin will do the trick.
NOTE: This and other similar videos show what I like to call "Pristine Plumbing." I've NEVER seen a snake/auger come back clean. They are usually covered with stinky black sludge that I like to call "excrement of swamp creature from the black lagoon." That junk likes to get on everything and it leaves stains. Eeeoooo! I understand why you don't show it. It's totally gross. It might, however, be a nasty surprise for an unsuspecting home owner!
FIRST UPDATE: I have not beat the swamp monster yet, but I do like the Rigid Power Spin. Just for comparison, I tried it manually first. I couldn't even get past the first T at 4-feet. Then I put on a drill motor and slipped right past the first T without any trouble. My hopes went up. I hit the next T at 10-feet. It more of a struggle, but I finally got past that one too. However, only 3-feet later, it stopped for good. I don't even know what I hit because there should not be any fitting at that location. I darn near twisted the cable apart trying to power through it. I'm going to go open a different clean out and come at it from a different direction. I'll report back.
FINAL UPDATE: I am very happy to report that the drain did NOT win. That's important for a grunting he-man like me. HA! The Rigid Power Spin with cordless drill attached worked very well from a different clean out opening. I used all 25-feet of cable and JUST made it to the clog. When I pulled it out, there was some stringy goo stuck in the very end of the auger bulb. That disrupted the clog just enough that I was able to finish it off with a treatment of baking soda and vinegar followed by a very large pot of boiling water. It's running freely now, but I'll be following up with earth friendly enzyme treatment to help eat away left over swamp monster poo.

If you aren't having any luck with these amateur tools and methods and you have large trees in the yard it's possible you have roots growing through your piping system. This requires professional intervention either heavy duty root busting augers or even worse digging, cutting roots and replacing pipe.

Good video.Sometimes holding the trigger closed in order to feed the cable in or out ,can be hard to maintain due to lack of hand strength, endurance, arthritis etc. I use a simple large spring vice like clamp . Depending on your position,or accessaround the plumbing will requiring doing it another way, like para cord ,wire or what ever works wrapped tight in place of a spring clamp. I have years of hand arthritis resulting in very weak hands, for a man, as a result of lack of use from the pain.
