PRINCESS KA'IULANI - Chicken Skin Hawaiian Legends & Ghost Stories

  • Victoria Kawēkiu Kaʻiulani Lunalilo Kalaninuiahilapalapa Cleghorn (October 16, 1875 - March 6, 1899) was heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Hawaii and held the title of Crown Princess. Her mother was Princess Likelike and her father, Archibald Cleghorn.
    It is often said by the hotel employees and guests that the ghost of the princess wanders the halls of the Sheraton Princess Ka'iulani Hotel, which is near the site of her childhood home, 'Ainahau, and offers help to those in need.
    ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
    Born and raised on 'O'ahu and spending his childhood summers on Hawai'i Island and visiting Maui frequently with his family, Lopaka Kapanui, also known as “The Ghost Guy,” grew up hearing all the old legends and ghost stories from his kupuna, his elders.
    His family’s legends, history, customs and protocol were passed down to Lopaka in the traditional Hawaiian way, through mo'olelo, from mouth to ear, sitting at the foot of his Mom and his Aunty as they related the lessons to him. He learned of the night marchers who only appeared during a particular moon phase. He learned why it is important to never share food with anyone while walking through a haunted place. He also learned the significance of the proper prayers to offer in ceremonial blessings, to enter or leave a sacred place, to ask for protection or forgiveness, or before gathering greenery in depths of a Hawaiian forest, and the importance of intent.
    Having been in the storytelling business for more than 20 years, hundreds of people have come forward to share their own stories with Lopaka as well, making him a repository of sorts for some of our islands' spookiest tales.
    Sharing more than just Hawaiian ghost stories, Lopaka shares his knowledge of the history and legends of 'O'ahu and Hawai'i.
    ~~~ Lopaka Kapanui's Mysteries-of-Ha... is Hawaii’s Original Ghost Tours and Chicken Skin Tours. Established in 1997 as a part of Glen Grant’s famous Haunted Hawaiian tours, helping to set the stage for all other ghost tours on Oahu and across the Hawaiian Islands. The realest, most exciting Historical and Haunted Tours of Hawaii.
    ---
    Before becoming a world-class destination, before ghost tours, before outside visitors... the islands of Hawai‘i were steeped in oral traditions of shape shifting beings in the upland forests or waterfalls which were inhabited by a translucent force that dragged young men into their dark depths in order to suck the spiritual life out of them. Even King Kamehameha found it necessary to appease the very gods themselves in order to secure victory in his campaign to bring the Hawaiian archipelago under one rule.
    Master storyteller, Lopaka Kapanui, brings to life the feared Nightmarchers, the goddess Pele, Menehune, e‘epa, mo‘o and more. But… Hawaiian deities and spirits aren’t the only things residing in this island paradise. Here is also where the Japanese dog demons, the inu-gami, are sent to ruin the lives of unsuspecting families. Here is where the Filipino vampire-like creature, the aswang, roams in search of her next victim. And here is where the Portuguese witch, the feiteceira, spins her spells and curses at her whim. Rich in culture and traditions, these islands are overflowing with stories of ghosts and hauntings, creatures and curses. Lopaka is the keeper of these stories.
    I thank Princess Ka’iulani for helping the couple who were lost. She’s also part of my family ancestry because my bloodline runs from King Kamehameha the 4th. True story.
    I’ve never seen her ghost but I’m drawn to her, I don’t know why. I’ve seen pictures of her as a little girl and when she’s an adult, she’s so beautiful and mysterious. I had a statue of her, one of a kind, someone stole it!
    Wasnt the site if the princess kaiulani hotel built on the Royal Ainahau estate Grounds.....where pricenss kaiulani lived in her last several years? That could be the reason why people at the hotel see her and why her spirit roams that area.
    Chills. Great story teller, thank you. I think of the princess whenever I'm in Brighton, England, where she liked to stand on the pier and gaze longingly out to sea. I stayed at that hotel in Waikiki too, and suspected it might be the very same one where the couple were lost. Many thought-provoking pictures of her around the hotel. Such a shame she died so young, no doubt partly of a broken heart.
    There’s a spot right there in the middle of Waikiki where that man Israel who plays the “over the rainbow“ song sits and plays his ukulele every night. I met him and didn’t realize he was a ghost. I saw him and talked with him for 15 minutes and listened to him play and he gave me a big hug when I left. He said he sits there every night and plays his ukulele. No one else saw him.
    We were at the Thornton lava tube, came out the other side in the woods. It started to rain really hard. I said ahoyhoy for some reason really loud. We heard it repeated back so loud and low the ground rumbled. We ran down to the car so fast. A local said people get swept off the mountain there. The minihuni live all over the rainforest. Did we hear one. Did he save us from danger too?
    On the big island, I stacked some stones at the warriors grave. A tiny warrior holding a weapon and pointing to the burial ground revealed himself in the Stones I stacked. The stacked stones I picked up had spiritual energy as well as many stones I stacked on those trips. Have a scary one from Maui too at one of the pools.
    We hiked into one of the 1st pools on the road to Hana. We found an area where something was feeding on wild bohrs. Hundreds of bones and hair teeth strewn all about. We found makeshift tools like tridents tied together for catching fish maybe. 15ft tall. Bamboo was cut at an angle so the bohar would fall on them at the base of the mountain. Have pix. They were bloody. Dried. We took pix and saw what seemed like green mossy bigfoots. A family. We all saw them in the pix. After telling the locals they said that pool with the swing, we don't go to that one. Yes it had the swing over the lava tube lake. Then they told me of the white bone crushers that knock cars off the cliffs there.
    My wife and I on each of our 9 trips there saw a great deal of supernatural things. I have a great story about meeting King K. In the human sacrifice temple on Hawaii by the shark God area. They had it on film. At least me asking for permission to enter and he allowed me to. They said look here. The ranger called us up for me entering. Said I belong here meaning Hawaii. I saw Madam Peleg many times each trip smiling at me. A local saw her too and cried then fell down and worshiped me called me Alii royalty. A samoahn man made the tourists taking pix of him take them of me. Said he is Alii. And so many other stories about ghosts.
    We were highly respected. I was at the ruin palace in the mountains and a giant tree fell around me. Missed me. Then the tops of the trees were wiggling on each tree like leading me out of the woods. And made my party follow them out. I said those were spirits y'all said its time to go danger. The spirits were in the trees. Led us all the way to the road safely.
      Serge McCoy I believe some spirits are in the trees, especially if the tree was a monument or a marker for a grave. In Hawaii, the old days trees was used as a marker like a headstone for a grave.
(not actually but it looked like her.) I started to cry fell all on the petroglyphs touching them crying. The sharrif came over and said I could have arrested you for all of that. But you belong here. That word came again Alii. Said your Alii.
