Hawaii's Most Haunted: Kiona'ole Road

  • In modern days, with tales of Urban Legends swirling about, Kiona'ole Road became mislabeled as “Morgan’s Corner,” although the area has nothing to do with Dr. Morgan. The misnomer is possibly due to the simple directions given to thrill-seekers and ghost hunters as being “a twisting road with hairpin turns just before the Pali lookout.” These days, it is often referred to as the “Second Morgan’s Corner.” I like to call it The Green Mile and a Half.

In this series, Lopaka brings you some of Hawaii's Most Haunted places.
Master storyteller, Lopaka Kapanui, brings to life the feared Nightmarchers, the goddess Pele, Menehune, e‘epa, mo‘o and more. But… Hawaiian deities and spirits aren’t the only things residing in this island paradise. Here is also where the Japanese dog demons, the inu-gami, are sent to ruin the lives of unsuspecting families. Here is where the Filipino vampire-like creature, the aswang, roams in search of her next victim. And here is where the Portuguese witch, the feiteceira, spins her spells and curses at her whim. Rich in culture and traditions, these islands are overflowing with stories of ghosts and hauntings, creatures and curses. Lopaka is the keeper of these stories.
Beyond the cool, blue waters and balmy trade winds of our idealistic paradise is the thin veil which separates our world from the place where shadows talk back. Spirits, Ghosts, Legends, Facts... Experience the Hawaii most don't see every day.

I had one of the most scariest experiences of my life on Kiona'ole Road. It was Halloween night 1982 and a friend and I were cruising around Kaneohe killing time until we had to pick up our other friends for a night out. My friend picked me up in her mother's brand new car and decided it would be a good idea to take a cruise up the old and dark winding road past the Ko'olau Golf Course. I immediately sensed that this was a bad idea and tried to persuade her to drive somewhere else. She was insistent and of course did not listen, saying everything would be ok since we were in a brand new car and that nothing could go wrong...yeah right! As we drove onto the road I was very uneasy, but the feeling became almost unbearable as we passed the Ko'olau Golf Course on our right and drove through the area where a gate now sits I believe. Both of our windows were down because we were both smoking a cigarette and the stereo was blaring and we came up on a area about a 1/4 mile down the road where there is a huge cliff of dirt on our right, at the base of the Koolaus. All of a sudden the hair on the back of my neck stood up and before I knew what was happening, all of the lights on this brand new car started to dim, the radio started going haywire, and the car itself started to die out. I started freaking out and yelling at my friend to stop screwing around but realized very quickly that she was just as panicked as I was and she clearly was not messing around. She kept hitting the gas but the car kept slowing down instead and she thought she might have accidentally knocked the gear shift into neutral, but once we both realized that the car was still in drive we really started to panic. While we are slowly coming up on this huge dirt hill, I hear this LOUD scream that did not sound human or like any animal I've ever heard. I look up to my right and standing on top of this hill that's about 20 feet high, is this "thing" that is at least 7-8 feet tall with it's arms outstretched and screaming at the top of it's lungs. I know this will sound silly, but it's appearance reminded me of Batman lol, but that is what it kind of looked like. I scramble to roll up my window because this thing is on my side of the car, and by this time my friend and I are both hysterical. A few seconds later as we roll past this hill with that thing screaming, the car returns to all of it's normal functions and we tear it out of there. We hook up with our friends and tell them what happened so of course now these idiots want to go back to see what's up there. I'm so freaked out and don't want to go but I'm now trapped in the back seat, so we go back and don't experience anything else but we come across a couple of our friends that said they saw us tearing out of there, but did not hear or see anything. The next day I tell my Hawaiian grandmother what happened and of course I get scolded for being someplace I didn't belong. She asks if I know what a mahiole is and shows me a picture of a warrior wearing a mahiole helmet and I immediately recognize this helmet as what I saw on the head of this screaming thing. My grandmother reminds me that this area is where all of Kalanikupule's warriors were driven off and over the Pali during the Battle of Nu'uanu! Needless to say I get serious chicken skin when told this and vowed to never go back there again. it's been 38 years and I have not been back there since.

I’ve heard of the story but not in details like this. Thanks for sharing! In fact, my step mom in law used to drive down that road late at night/super early morning after work. Normally nothing happens but one time she had to rest her eyes from driving to avoid getting into an accident. So she took a quick nap. Not even for 5 mins, she started smelling something funky as if something is dead. Then she hears things... and of course woke up so fast and drove TF out of there! Honestly, it may be scary but at the same time I feel very bad for these spirits that are stuck on earth. I hope they find their peace eventually.

Many times at work, I hear stories from passengers talk of entities that stand on a tree limb glancing at the living, near Old Mamaloha road. Could it be those who were killed in that proximity?
To be honest, evil seeks information. Those who pretend all knowing usually always encounter demons of many sorts. If those who carry themselves having highly talents of witchcraft or possess arts of black magic, we hope they carry the information that entities thrive upon. Otherwise, we'll read or hear them through your wonderful tales, Lopaka.
