Crucial for all of the Hawaii people young and old, to hear and listen to how Hawaii came about, as you will not hear about this in school history books, have to know your roots, makes you more appreciative and respectful of where you came from!
Very excited to hear these stories. When I first got out of college I worked as an editor for a Hawaiian documentary company that got permission and filmed on Ni'ihau. Sadly, I didn't go along for the shoot, but being able to see that footage and hear from the Ni'ihau people directly is something I'll never forget. The documentary, for those interested, is called "The Hawaiians: Reflecting Spirit"

Watching you from Alabama.Sinclairs are a piece of work, Native Americans were sold out with liquor, beads, and some got guns.Even cheated the landowner and shortchanged them.WOW the Japanese pilot had a luau the contracted workers who were translators got some Karma.Interesting history.The more you know💫Love Uncles ghost stories and history lessons😘
Mahalo for sharing. There is a lot that have been left out and I just want to point out the most important one to the Ohana Ni’ihau out of everything that was mentioned in the video. And that is the Ohana Ni’ihau’s aloha For Ke’Akua or love of Ke’Akua (God.) is the number one thing that is most valuable to us. We worship no other Gods but one, Iehova. The next two are aloha Ohana (love for the Ohana) and lastly, aloha ‘āina (Love for the land.) I along with my Ohana Kelley of Ni’ihau are so fortunate and grateful for the Robinson Ohana for their continuous commitment, dedication, and support in the preservation and the perpetuation of the Ohana Ni’ihau culture, traditions, Language, and it’s way of life. Ni’ihau wouldn’t be Ni’ihau today had it not been for their tremendous outpouring effort, stewardship and aloha for the people and the island in wanting to maintain the islands heritage and its legacy. So we Mahalo Ke’Akua for the Robinson Ohana and continue to pray for them to mālama Ni’ihau for the Ohana Ni’ihau.

@nomad74777, Damon Rydell, yes, it is common knowledge that the purchase of Ni'ihau cost the Sinclairs $10,000. Negotiations for the island was initiated in September 1863, brokered by the Minister of the Interior, G.H. Robertson while Kamehameha IV was King. The Sinclair family initially offered the Hawaiian government $6,000. Because Kamehameha IV passed away that November, and the deal was completed and the island was sold in January 1894, it was approved by Kamehameha V. The purchase price of $10,000 is common knowledge, but we left that information out because, within the context of this video, it almost sounds as if the amount of money validates the treatment that the native Hawaiians received.

Bradduh I'm trying to understand and maybe lost in the content, why was it sold and sold to a foreigner? Right now across the water on Kaua'i you have foreigners buying the land of my roots. Turning them into their private bunker. Lana'i already gone. I fear the same for Kaua'i. Who is selling out?
They were tricked into selling unfortunately by people who knew so.

But they use the greetings Aloha and mahalo and wear the culture and heritage around their necks as facades. But yet have no cae when it comes to exploitation and commercialisation. Hawaii Kings didn't gain much through taxing Niihau and instead chose to play foreigners' game of land sale and took the money instead... the result of trying to look and live like foreigners.

Some of my children attended Ke Kula Niihau o Kauai in Kekaha in and around 2002 or so. They could speak hawaiian but did struggle with the Niihau dialect.
How do they get basic supplies?
Barges from Kauai bring supplies regularly. People who live on the island have family and commute to Kauai often.
It’s not some closed off place where the residents never have contact with the outside world.
Only a couple dozen people live there now. The ohana will return to visit but most now live on Kauai’s west side. They go back to be counted as residents but most do not live there.
Haku haku from the land of the Chumash the owners of the land from Los Angeles in the south to Paso Robles in the North. These stories are of the utmost importance for our children especially, the haole' have ruined our indigenous world as much as they can but we are recovering. Tani he'(thank you)
My husband is a urban search and rescue team captain for the fire department and knows Mr. Robinson personally so he has been there many times and they don't have running water or 🔌 at all they speak only Hawaiian from what my husband says my husband bought a house for his brother and his family many years ago on Kauai so 😮😮

Much of the Big Island doesn't have running water, that is why they have cisterns. Unless you live near Kona or Hilo you're on your own.

there's a barge that goes from Pakala, Kauai to Niihau brah. Some of my classmates at Kekaha School were from Niihau and they didn't look like they were controlled by the Robinsons. What U talking bout?

Many sacrifices were taken from the "kauwā," they were considered the lowest class of people consisting of servants, slaves, and outcasts. They could never move above their class and they could never marry anyone from a higher class either. As far as being happy or honored to be chosen, stories tell of kauwā running from the mū, the body catchers, whose job it was to find the sacrifices. So they probably didn't feel to pleased about it. Other sacrifices were kapu breakers, prisoners of war, and enemies of the ali'i.
@@MysteriesofHawaii Thank you for responding. "Outcast" could mean someone not perfect..mentally deficient or physically impaired? Either way, I would still run from the mu. The idea of human sacrifice feels like some residual influence from a Mayan culture.

The original 'Native' Hawai'ians did not own the Land, the Land Owned the People, same as on the Mainland and most indigenous cultures. The concept of 'Land Ownership' was introduced by the 'Western Civilizations' but was very quickly embraced by the Hawai'ians where the privileged upper caste were granted titles to large amounts of 'Free Land'. They understood the value of a quick profit for easy-money and 'sold' their land to more intelligent and industrious people that turned the land into vast fortunes for many generations. Meanwhile, the greedy and short-sighted Hawai'ians quickly ran out of land and spent their money unwisely. And now they claim their land was stolen and want it back... The USA did NOT steal their land, they sold away their country. By allowing Missionaries to bring diseases and religion to their paradise, they lost everything. By choosing to not fight for their Kingdom, it was taken like a ripe fruit by a monkey.

I wouldn't say that most living things don't want Hawaiians to succeed, but yes it's true, many haoles came from many places and told plenty lies to the Hawaiian people. They took the land from the Hawaiians , they bastardized the culture for the benefit of the tourist industry, they rerouted the streams on Kauai so they could irrigate the surface industry. The west side of Kauai is like a desert today because of this . Waimea town, Hanapepe, Eleele, were all lush and tropical 200 years ago, but George Norton Wilcox came to Kauai and literally changed the climate so that his crops would flourish, and they did!
