i think comments like these are unfair since elizabeth obviously had more time just be a normal kid and mature (both in terms of acting and her personal life) outside of the spotlight whereas mary-kate and ashley we're forced into doing stuff that they didn't want to do. elizabeth actually talked about the "butt out" thing on ellen and how awkward it was for everyone involved.

looking at this stuff makes it creepy that there was a countdown for when these girls turned 18. People knew these girls from infancy, they had seen or knew of these movies they were in, and they were waiting eagerly until they were legally available?

Not Applicable I didn't know about that countdown bit. I know that I and *most kids loved and idolized* these girls. *But* ofc *this world is ugly and twisted.* Beauty & innocence getting smeared is never out of trend.
That obsession with age of consent of starlets is completely ridiculous, like all these creepy anons on 4chan suddenly acting like they're legally entitled to fuck Emma Watson once she turned _insert your local legal age_ was insane. With Olsens it was a bit different though, as tabloids wondered about the fate of their fortune, so, obsessing over legal age of child stars in that context was far less creepy, even if stalky.
I remember back when IMDB had chat boards there were some people keeping track of when the girl from Lazytown would "be legal" too. Always seemed really creepy to me.
I think this is what drove the Scarlet Witch crazy; she found the darkest universe and it broke her.
I really want a new Olsen Twins mystery movie in the style of Mystery Team, where two grizzled washed-up child stars have to solve a murder.

Uuuuuugh. When I was in Elementary school, we'd have to watch Mary Kate and Ashley movies whenever there was a tornado warning. The whole school would pile into the maintenance basement with one twelve inch TV, and we were all expected to be placated by this shit. Bear in mind, I lived in the tornado belt, so this sort of thing happened several times a year. And every time, I prayed that the power would go out.

I remember when we had a bunch of Mary-Kate & Ashley VHSes at the library I work at. I wonder now how many times they were checked out by adults for nostalgia's sake and not for their kids. Because I can't imagine any kid actually enjoying these pieces of shit.
These two were pushed as precocious since they were toddlers, but they were never any better than completely average. Seriously, pull a couple random kids in off the street, and you couldn't tell the difference. Maybe that was their attraction: even I could be a star! Look at them!
To be fair, the reason they were used initially is because when you have twins you can get away with child working laws...it meant a more effective production on stuff like full house.
I'd argue they are more photogenic than the average child and having worked on a TV set since before they can remember probably made them all the more appealing to push as stars. It would be hard to find a couple of random kids who are used to the workings of film production.
We never did learn what the noise about boys was...
I think Elizabeth Olsen got the last laugh eventually.

Not forgotten, they just made the wise decision to leave acting and focus on something they were actually good at. Their fashion empire is an unqualified success, and they certainly have credibility in that world. I wonder what they feel, looking back at these kitschy videotapes.

I love that one of them has a bike with "CRIME" on it and "STOPPERS" on the other. What happens when they split up?
One of them goes off and commits crimes (usually minor ones, like loitering); the other sells rubber corks and bathtub plugs door-to-door.

The detective one ended too soon. The whole thing was a ruse to get the family onto a cruise ship so the mimes could carry out their dastardly plans to take over SeaWorld without two little kids underfoot.

I never realized how tall Phelan was until just now. I actually read some of the Olsen twins' books when they were around; they were pretty bad, even the "memoir" Our Story.
I swear that when they open the door to Thorn Mansion, I see a boom mike in the top right corner!!

I mean, they have a networth of $400 million. Elizabeth is worth like $5 million. But successful in their own right, but safe to say they're still the more profitable siblings haha
While Elizabeth is the only one still acting in legitimate movies, you have to remember: their mom was the one who forced them into all these awful things. She was the producer for every one, and it's just kind of horribly depressing. The same thing happened to Macaulay Culkin. His dad was the one who got him into acting and kept forcing him to do it, when he didn't want to after a certain point, and once his parents got divorced he went to live with his mom and retired from acting because he could.
@Shwah Gamers interesting, kinda explains why Macaulay was such a big advocate for Michael Jackson, who was possibly the most exploited child star in history. Most actors who started young end with mental issues, I was surprised Saoirse Ronan got a break as an adult and without going crazy like Natalie Portman, Britney Spears or Edward Furlong. Tells your something when you are surprised when an actor you seen as a child doesn't turn up screwed in the head by the time they turn 20.
oh gods i remember these. i was obsessed with sherlock holmes, encyclopedia brown, and wishbone as a child, so the detective movies especially were my JAM. i feel bad for those poor girls now, but child me was just enthralled by kids having fun solving mysteries and traveling to neat places.
I have seen these a few times now, and I smirk each and every time at the mangling of the dance's name. I don't know why it's so amusing but it's one of my favorite running gags on the channel

I’ve been watching all the ones in this series I’ve come across and I actually really remember the second and third movies in this one. Ugh. I loved it, too. Me and my sister each had a favorite twin.

Loved this one! Wow, what a flashback from my childhood that was. Perhaps you should do more of these... would love to see your opinion on the one where MK & A go to Six Flags.
This is a very funny video and one that I rewatch every once in a while. Great stuff.
It might just be me, but it seems like in almost every MK&A thing, every one of the other performers are always more energetic, better actors, and a heck of a lot more likeable than them. It's like they are always there, sucking the energy out of the room, while everyone else tries to bring it back up.
Also, tiny little fact: The "braces girl", named Shannon Chandler, did a couple of other things and grew up to be quite beautiful. Makes me wonder if she just decided acting wasn't for her, or if she was forced out by the crap that young girls have to deal with in the industry. I feel like her and the brunette girl who was in many of the scenes were really trying their best to give some kind of effort.
Anyways, I'm probably putting way too much thought into a Mary Kate & Ashley bargain bin VHS tape, so I'll just end by saying thanks for all the laughs you two provide!

When I was a kid I had a Mary Kate & Ashley CD and one of the songs on there was that Brother for Sale one. I remember listening to it and thinking it was the weirdest most confusing song I had ever heard

I'm glad the style of child star marketing that the Olsen twins represented has mostly died out, at least in the west.
