I feel like the ‘dead/missing parent’ trope is because for many of these movies the girls were too young to really have a romantic plotline, so that was given to their single parent instead (because of course, you can’t have a movie without a romantic plotline). That or to make it easier to escape parental supervision.
yes and yes. We need the MK&A romances in every film
That and one fewer character to have to fit into the narrative.
Actually they said it was following the formula of having a dead parent in Full House, as their first movie was written by the Full House creator, they at times continued the story line in their movies. Just like with their show Two of a Kind had a dead parent, it too was produced/created by Full House crew members.
@@mistymitchell2790 That's really interesting! Crazy how much Full House influenced their entire careers considering how young they were when they were on it.
Very similar to how the Hollywood industry treated Shirley Temple, always using her as an orphan or small child of a widowed parent, to lure the next single adult in the plot to fall in love with her current parent/guardian.
2:48 they said in an interview that whenever they sat down with a movie production team they would ask them, “Who’s the girly girl and who’s the tomboy?” And reluctantly Mary-Kate (I believe) said, “I guess I’m more of a tomboy…” and Ashley said, “I guess I’m more girly…” and that’s it. That’s how they were written for every movie. But they were only given those choices because in the 90s you were either or girly girl or tomboy in media lol
the two genders... girly and tomboy
But didn’t Ashley play the tomboy and Mary-Kate the girly girl is New York minute? Or am I getting it mixed up?
@@foosheezooMary Kate was the rock star and Ashley was the more uptight in that movie!
It’s like that 2000’s bedroom makeover show, where a kid will say they casually enjoy playing basketball & then the decorators make the room into an entire basketball court or something
@sketchycat6223 Hahaha hahaha that is such an accurate description of that show.
I was so obsessed with holiday in the sun my mom saved for several years to take me to Atlantis (the resort in the Bahamas where it was shot) and I spent a week living out my very favorite MKA fantasy. 10/10 fav vacation ever. #thanksmom 😂❤
How does it feel to live my dream?
@@ashleynorton oh it was magical. I happened to be there the same weekend HGTV was shooting a big TV event there. I actually was into home improvement stuff watched it with my mom. We got to meet Alison Victoria (kitchen crashers) and the cousins on Call who were both ridiculously nice. I recognized Alison in the airport in Nassau and she could not believe a (at the time) 16 year old watched her show and knew who she was. My mom didn't believe me when I said I saw her and I stopped her shamelessly and IT WAS HER. she even remembered us later on during the HGTV event pulled us out of the line and introduced us personally to the cousins on call. It was so cool. So that along with just BEING at Atlantis was seriously the best vacation ever. My mom was not in any means wealthy and she saved for probably 5 years to take me on that trip. I don't think anything will ever top it. Love my momma and incredibly thankful for her ❤️
I wish I could add the photo we have with Alison and the cousins where you can clearly tell I'm at Atlantis but you can't add a pic to the comments 😭
that is the sweetest thing ever ❤
Babe, same. I had a friend get married in the Bahamas, and the guests were all there for the week of the wedding. When my friend was asking what everyone wanted to do for one of the day activities, I was immediately like "The Atlantis waterpark. Purely to live my Holiday in the Sun fantasy". And it was a great day, haha
Recognizing Jared Padalecki as Dean from Gilmore Girls instead of Sam from Supernatural is such a flex.
this but people recognizing jensen ackles from the boys instead of dean supernatural... like what do u mean u dont remember where u were on november 5th 2020
@@iwakeupandboomimarateven more of a “flex” if you recognize Jensen as Jason from Smallville (but I still think Dean is his most iconic role).
Right??
Well, I recognize them from bootleg art on a Russian fantasy novels 🧐
How about recognizing Jared as the high school bully in Cheaper by the Dozen?
really needed this on the first day back to corporate life after 5 days off
Same, currently watching during my break lmao
Same! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
savoring this at the office 😩
Our Lips Are Sealed is an ICONIC PIECE OF MEDIA which deserves to be honored, uplifted, celebrated, and have its own national holiday. That is all.
The only bad part is the mention of Luna Park. We don't support planned arson and supporting the park 20 years after it happened.
I'm French, and if I remember correctly, in the French dubbed version of Passport to Paris, they made the two boys Italian, to explain the language barrier, etc As a kid, I didn't question it for even a second😂
NO.
Mdr!!! 😂😂😂😂
nan mais elle raconte n'importe quoi.@@leahtv7778
In French dubbed Gilmore girls, Michel is italian!
Omg did the ‘French’ accents hurt you as much as they hurt me?
From my experience as a little white kid around a bunch of white adults, a lot of them really enjoyed hearing racist remarks from children. They were able to rationalize because the kid "didn't know what they were saying" while still getting the vindication of SOMEONE saying it when they couldn't. It was like getting a kid to cuss at a cop for them.
thank u for the succinct explanation lol that actually makes a lot of sense tho
Or you’re just so white you are over sensitive to racism out of insecurity.
as a woc (then child) who grew up around a bunch of white adults, i concur. you see a similar phenomenon even now with a lot of straight white men who write for anything other than straight white men.
@hamilcross
What nonsense are you spewing? The most prevalent racist groups in the US are POCs.
And that is a statistical fact.
Knowing damn well they teach that sht to them
It Takes Two is a "Prince and the Pauper" story. I looooove identical strangers. No one ever explains it. Joy.
Also, It Takes Two is amazing. The accents. The EXPOSING of the human trafficking pipeline that is US child welfare. Steve Guttenberg. You get it.
I often get that and Parent Trap movie mixed up
The number of people in these movies who went on to be really successful actors is truly impressive
Welcome to the world of extras. Same happens in a lot of tv dramas/sitcoms. Someone appears as a patient for a medical drama one year and five years later they’re a big movie star. We’ve been rewatching House and I see it ALL the time especially with early seasons.
Pretty much every actor that wasn't nepo-babied into a leading role from the get-go started out as an extra in low budget movies or tv shows.
Finally the full exploration we deserve of the MKAU (Mary-Kate and Ashley Universe).
I actually thought before I went into this that I hadn’t seen any Mary-Kate and Ashley movies but now I have unearthed core memories of seeing How The West Was Fun and Our Lips Are Sealed.
I never got to see Our Lips Are Sealed. I don't recall for sure if I really wanted to see it or not, but I want to see it now lol.
@@mark-breen I also forgot i saw our lips are sealed. it was deeply repressed for no good reason
Holiday in the Sun also has one of the most iconic lines in all of cinema: "Has anyone ever told you that I am going to kiss you?"
i remember that movie was also the first time i heard the word “sucks” when the pretty guy says “my memory sucks” and we were always told not to quote it 😂
@@cottonkandi444luckily it was just that :( Some genius put an adult joke in a kids movie, forgot which one, & my dumbazz was going around telling ppl I was gonna make love with them, bc I thought it meant like, produce a lot of love bc you love them so much
The implication of Our Lips Our Sealed that one of the surfer boy's fathers owned a theme park where seven people literally burned alive on a ride is insane like who approved that
What?? Before or after Our Lips Are Sealed?
@@strawberrylime33 before!! 1979 ghost train fire
These movies were so unserious omggg😭😭
@@drew-anneglennie6392watched a Netflix doc on this recently.. was a real thing and they just threw it in a MK&A movie 😭 no wonder we’re doomed.
It Takes Two wasn't meant to be a rip-off of The Parent Trap, it was supposed to be a remake of The Prince and the Pauper. I think it just got linked in the collective subconscious because The Parent Trap came out only a few years later
I thought it came out in the 60’s?
@@susannahgrau4980 The original came out in the 60's. I was referring to the 90's remake that came out a year or two after It Takes Two
As a girl who begged her mom to enroll me in the Mary Kate and Ashley fan club in 1998, I am so excited to see what your opinions are!
ashley, i need you to know that everytime you post a video, i go absolutely feral because only YOU have been making content for my very niche child/teen hyperfixations or obsessions, like literally everytime. its almost like you're in my brain. i just need you to know how much i appreciate this. pls keep doing what ur doing.
I'm not kidding when I say that Holiday In The Sun was a formative piece of media for me. When they break the fourth wall in the 'post credits' scenes and talk about the cast actually filming the movie for me... that was my first experience with media disrupting form and I was forever changed. And I took my FIRST EVER visit to Atlantis Bahamas last year to live out my childhood dream.
I can't really describe how the bad boy child fooling everyone into thinking he got a tattoo so he couldn't do his dive has never left me since I saw Billboard Dad as a kid. Just a classic. Also I believe the dad pours OJ in his cereal by accident. Who could forget that?
And they shake eggs in a bag and all those strange art statues, I loved that move so much 😆
Agreed. Plus, their bad guy is named Nigel and he has a British accent. Wasn't that a cultural tradition of the early 2000s?
My sister never let it go that the kid wore Jean shorts to a pool 😂
@@janewaysmom literally every British man truly was named Nigel
That scene that has the casino line felt like someone for one second let you breathe from being punched only to hit you with a truck.
Absolutely gutted that this doesn’t include the “in universe” Mary-Kate and Ashley movies- I had a bunch on VHS growing up, and the power that Sleepover Party still has over me to this day is incalculable.
I think I only saw the sleepover one of those, but I still sing Brother For Sale. My sister no longer remembers that sleepover, so I'm not sure how people perceive it when I sing it, but it lives in my heart all the same, vaguely threatening my brother.
Omg “brooooother for sale!” Childhood memory unlocked! I’m in my 30s and can still recall every word 🤣🙌🏾 mf legend shit!
I had that Sleepover tape on repeat and still sing a few lines of the pizza song on occasion. 😂
P I Z Z A
I always went feral over their mystery series, I think about the bee woman all the time
The fact that they are not actually identical twins, allegedly, is the wildest part of them playing joint roles and switching places, you can tell them apart easily i reckon
I've heard that! I watched a video that spotted who was playing Michelle on Full House based on their ear shape and dominant hands. wild
I could always tell them apart but a lot of people actually believe that they are identical mirror twins, not fraternal. They've even talked about this themselves but said they won't get tested because they don't want to know one way or the other. But their teeth fell out on opposite sides, they have opposite dominant hands and when one is doing really well the other is usually not doing so good plus when they were younger they looked a lot like mirror opposites
I travel a lot for work, and I'm constantly in awe of how people traveled/had stuff go wrong in the days before cell phones 💀
I simply would not go anywhere
@ashleynorton I loved this video btw
when you showed the editing for Holiday in the Sun, i immediately had to check to see if the director had started in music videos and he apparently is best known for his work on live concert recordings, so that explains everything to me lmao
does it?? I need to sit this man down
Passport to Paris is definitely top three for me. But omg, as a French speaking person, trying to decipher what the boy was saying in « French » to the waiter was so painful. I appreciate the effort but good lord did he butcher that sentence 😂
Omg yes, that’s like they just told them to say random words and to force their “r” 😭😭😭
I was just about to comment that I was horrified.
Omg translate please
As a Chinese person, I laughed out loud hearing the cast attempt to speak Chinese. Without the subtitles, there's no way I would've understood what they were saying.
As a kid, my grandma only had a couple of movies we could watch, and two of them were The Parent Trap and It Takes Two. I have no idea how i didn't realize they were the same movie after watching them both literally hundreds of times, but i was obsessed with both of them as a child
as a british kid, my parents wouldn’t let me watch mary-kate and ashley content because it would “make me american”. excited to finally know what they’re about.
She could have just forced you to watch one ep of Dr Who for each MK -A movie you watched to keep you British 😂😂
Yikes… judgey
@@lc1371agreed, but it wasn’t rare: my friend’s mother banned him from coming to a Halloween party because “it’s an American thing” & American accents in tv shows wound a lot of British parents up at the time cause children started using Cali pronunciation.
It’s kinda mad.
yikes... its REALLY not that big of a deal in comparison to the judgment minorities face lmao@@lc1371
honestly fair
"When In Rome walked... slowly, so that The Lizzie Mcguire Movie could run it over with a Ford pickup truck."
There are two different types of girls/fans when it comes to Jared Padelicki: Sam from Supernatural or Dean from Gilmore Girls (which is ironic because his screen brother and alternate deuteroganist in Supernatural is also named Dean.)
Also, I will add: first sponsorship link I ever clicked on. I need new bras, so I bought new bras. 5 of them, in fact. For $88. Thank, Ash.
I couldn't stop laughing during that part, like that's the wrong brother 😂
@@mrh8142 Same! "and then Dean" Uh, you mean Sam. "from Gilmore Girls." Oh. Sorry. Continue.
I’ve been WAITING FOR YEARS for a good CZcamsr to do this and i couldn’t be happier it’s u! Yaaaas I can’t wait to watch this later!!! 💖💖💖
When I was a kid my great aunt got us Mary Kate & Ashley VHS tapes, which we were not allowed to watch because they were a ✨bad influence✨. Excited to see what I was missing lol
As a hardcore Italian fan, I remember growing up thinking their teen movies existed in some sort of multiverse, because they all have the same title - the format was "Two twins in [insert city/country]" or "Two twins [activity]". But it surely made it easier to remember the content lol
At first I was like "omg I didn't know Italy had a fanbase like that" lmfao
these movies were my whole childhood - i have a twinsister so we were absolutely obsessed with the olsen twins
I clicked immediately just for your thoughts on The Challenge, the best of all their movies, and I was NOT disappointed
I had to buy the dvd and a dvd player for the challenge. worth it.
@@ashleynorton your own personal Challenge if you will
When I was younger I visited Nassau (in the Bahamas) and went to the local cultural centre/museum, and the guy working there actually played the police chief in Holiday in the Sun. I had never heard of the movie (or any of the Olsen twins' movies) but I watched it after meeting him and it soon became one of my favourite comfort/cringe watch movies. Formative experience to say the least
Eugene Levy saying “I need to commandeer this veHICle” as he steals that RV from the couple in New York minute is seared into my brain.
It’s crazy to think there was a time where these twins ruled the freaking world.
So you’re telling me that Mary Kate and Ashley have other movies than the critically acclaimed movie A New York Minute?! Crazy
I’m 34 and I’m not exaggerating when I say my family still quotes It Takes Two on the daily. Parent trap who?? 😂
Same and same!! All the time!! 😂😂😂
I quote it all the time too! My kids just don't get it. Lol
“New York Minute” “The Challenge” “Our Lips Are Sealed” & “Passport To Paris” r my absolute favorites of their movies
The way that Passport to Paris still has me in a chokehold at the tender age of 31 😂
Friend, same, but Winning London for me lololololol. "Britain does not negotiate with terrorists"‽ What kind of diplomacy is that‽ But also, if I ever get to go clubbing in the UK, I hope one of the clubs plays that song from the movie lololololol.
‘Holiday in the Sun’ was like my addiction, but it left me feeling really down about my body, hair, and style, wishing I could look like Megan Fox or the girls from Play. I felt so ugly in comparison. And ‘Passport to Paris’? I absolutely adored it. It had me dreaming about finding a guy who'd be that sweet to me. My mom must’ve seen me watch these movies at least 100 times each. It makes me want to travel back in time and give my younger self a huge hug.
Passport to Paris & New York Minute are my FAVORITE Mary-Kate & Ashley movies! I am so happy that you are covering the MKAOCU❤
It takes two is based on the same book as the parent trap😂 It’s a novel from a famous German author originally called ‚Das doppelte Lottchen‘ (in English published as ‚Lisa and Lottie‘ and later ‚The Parent Trap‘)
You untapped some deeply buried childhood memories. I didn't realize how many Mary Kate and Ashley movies I had seen.
My first thought was “Sam Winchester from Supernatural” so when you said Dean, I was like “wrong brother”
Jensen Ackles needs to play a Sam in order to even things out.
This video made me realize that I've seen It Takes Two, but it merged with the Parent Trap in my head (two movies i haven't thought about since they came out) and now I know it's 2 movies. Wild
I only strongly remember It Takes Two, though I know I watched most of these. My mom HATED the identical strangers plot, I bet she would bring up how unrealistic it was if I asked her today 😂
@sweb23879 Is that one that ripped off "The Parent Trap" (1961)?🤣
I could never roast something as precious, something as superlative, something as awesome as the Mary-Kate & Ashley franchise. Those girls rule!
omg i remember watching these movies as a kid and mary-kate and ashley looked so much like my cousin i was convinced it was actually her
completely lost it at the "nooooooo" shot that goes into one twin's mouth and out the other????? who in their right mind thought of that 😭
Kind of surprised that Holiday in the Sun is so high on your list as I remember it was one of my friends' least favorites, but I loved that one so much! Happy to see this 90 minute commercial for Atlantis finally get some respect! Side comment: I think it made me and everyone I know want to go there, so clearly it still did its job.
“Bike boy” in New York Minute is Riley Smith who, coincidentally, also played a character name Dean in another movie (Motocrossed) and plays in the (unfortunately now cancelled) show Nancy Drew. He was one of my teen crushes 😂
While biking in Vancouver, my brother and I saw him & recognized him as the guy who always played the hot guy on Disney channel lol
Omg yes. I did this binge watch the month after I finished university when I wasn't ready to start job searching yet. Tried to start a blog and everything. Begged a podcaster to send me their files of all of Two of a Kind and watched the whole thing thanks to their generosity. Glorious time.
Winning London was my obsession as a kid I just remember watching that movie daily for at least 6 months as an adult I have never rewatched it as I am sure it won't hold up but I remember being so invested in ir
How does Ashley always know exactly what I need when I need it? Getting a little creepy, but I’m fine with it
Double Double Toil and Trouble is my #1 MK&A movie. I’ll never forget the scene of the lady coloring in her gray hair with black mascara
Thank god you posted this just in time for me to play it during my daily workout!
When I was 7 years old (c. 2000) I once ordered frog legs because they were served it in Passport to Paris and I always wanted to try it!
I see Ashley, I click the video. Today, I clicked faster than ever.
But none of the adventure series?? 😭
no complaints! shhhh
@@ashleynorton but moooooo0000oooom
You always hit me in the soft nostalgia place 🥹
Thank you, this made my day, I used to have a dvd with all of their movies, would rewatch them all the time
as someone who LIVED for these movies as a child I was convinced half of them were a fever dream how have tou activated the Mary-Kater and Ashley sleeper agent who was slumbering in my brain
So I’ve never actually seen To Grandmother’s House We Go, I just vaguely remember seeing commercials for it but all I could recall was the girls riding the carriage. So this whole time I thought it was just a cute movie about twin girls riding a horse drawn carriage through the magical Christmas forest to their grandma’s house. I was obviously mistaken.
Lmao same here!
the Michael cera clip sent me 💀
i’ve been waiting for this video my whole life and i just discovered you this week. legend???
the adventures of Mary Kate & Ashley were poetic cinema.
my favs from memory were 'the mystery of thorne mansion', 'the great fun house mystery', & 'the shark encounter.
I remember the fun house one giving me actual nightmares.
if you make a separate video just on those I will be eternally greatful.
winning london and passport to paris is probably only in my top 5 for nostalgia reasons
but i have a really hard time with plot-to-montage ratio, and holiday in the sun was such a disappointment when i was a kid, i remember feeling like “okay but where is the rest of the movie”
thank you so much for this video
49:56 god I love the 90’s!! Filmmakers just don’t have the courage to take artistic risks like this anymore!!! 💀💀💀
I LOVED THESE MOVIES AS A KID!! What a fun idea for a video omg
"It Takes Two" is more of a modern, very loose interpretation of "The Prince and the Pauper," not a reinvention of "The Parent Trap". 😊
all I'm gonna say is if you aren't listening to the "they thought I was you" podcast and you're a marykate and ashley fan you totally should! Its 2 friends who are superfans and are going back througb all their whole timeline and even get to interview people who worked closely with them and other superfans. They also are trying to uncover the behind the scenes like their relationship with their parents and manager and whether they even wanted to do this. 2nd showing and gimme pizza are also good ones! Derricks doll collection has some good info as well💖

I’ve been waiting with baited breath for you to upload. Tonight is my night.
I just found your CZcams channel today and I am so glad I did, I’m at home sick from work and yesterday I slept most of the day because I was bored out of mind, today your videos are the only thing keeping me entertained. I agree with most if not all of your opinions, I like the style of content you produce, and I like the way you go about certain topics (don’t even get me started on the length of your videos god bless you 😩) thank you for blessing my CZcams feed with your content 💕
I had no clue I'd seen any of the Mary-Kate and Ashley movies until the clip of Mary-Kate playing baseball from It Takes Two played and I had an out of body experience because I apparently erased that entire movie from my brain. So thanks for that lmao
I will never not love the poster of How the West Was Fun , the struggled expressions are everything to me.
When I was in highschool, my friend was OBSESSED with MK&A, so she lent me every single one of their movies on VHS. She was so disappointed when I watched them all & told her I liked their silly kid movies rather than the travel + meet boys ones 😂 I should rewatch them.
This makes me want their detective series too! Awesome video! Thanks for the nostalgia 💕
Ashley I’ve never been more excited for a video, this is such a great idea
40:48 I immediately recognised the "creepy twins" as the same ones from the A Series of Unfortunate Events TV show!
Same here, they used to live near me in Vancouver and I met them a number of times. I was surprised to see them young (er)!
I know Jared Padelecki from supernatural so hearing you call him Dean was so funny 😂
Occasionally, I think to myself "what about the ashley and mary kate movies" and this is the universe answering.
I can’t explain the imprint Passport to Paris left on me as a kid. The phone headsets, the fashion, the boys, the way to order soda instead of fish. C'est magnifique 🥖💋🇫🇷✨
hey, I really like your content! I know being a creator is difficult, but your content is really fun and makes my day better. I hope you're able to find the space to make this a reality long-term because it's been a lot of fun to consume. Best of luck!
i laughed a lot in this video but i’m dying at “he eat chip and lie” about the dog 😭😭😭
Oof. Luna Park. I forgot that was in this film. There was a horrible fire there which was *allegedly* set by crooked cops and the mob. Seriously. 7 people were killed.
Did you ever watch Two of a Kind or So Little Time? I think Two of a Kind was so underrated!!
I remember having a crush on the dad in Two of a Kind 😂
I started this thinking "there is no way this is going to be as entertaining as watching one of those movies myself" and I was a damned fool. You're hilarious.
As a '90s kid full on obsessed with these twins, it's actually bonkers that Bart in how the west was fun was a psychopath even as a kid because he TRIED TO BURN IT DOWN???
Congrats on 100k by the way, you deserve em all! 👏
My sister would definitely bust out the "brother for sale" song whenever I'd done something particularly annoying.
Thank you so much for noticing "Champlain," I rewatched Holiday in the Sun with my friend a while back and could not let it go
The only thing I remember at all from Getting There is "why do they call you Toast?" Well toast gets burned alot" 😂 that will never not be funny.
But my fav of the older years was winning London. " They're called tea sandwiches. More like teeny weeny sandwiches" 😂😂😂
Loved this! Extra fun fact: bike guy in New York minute also was in DCOM Motorcrossed so not his first time biking like that on screen!
There's a reviewer that would refer to the missing parent as falling victim to "Carcanceritis" and that always still sticks in my mind.
I was absolutely jumpscared at 45:53 - I am friendly with Curtis Andersen as of a few years ago and I never noticed just HOW much stuff he is in from my childhood. He doesn't really act anymore but I keep seeing his face in EVERYTHING. The only thing I knew of before meeting him was Sabrina the Teenage Witch, in which he is only in the first season I believe. But recently I saw him pop up in Gilmore Girls, my FAVORITE show, as the prosecutor on Rory's case. It's sort of that phenomenon of when you get a certain type of car, you start noticing it everywhere lol.
Also, his accent is so... interesting lol. I'm tempted to ask what the instructions were for it.
Very much enjoyed watching this video! I'm 6 months younger than Mary Kate and Ashley so i grew up with them. Every year for Christmas we got the VHS tale of whatever new movie they had made that year. They were always so ridiculous but fun all at the same time.
The second you showed the shot of the older twins from How the West Was Fun, I knew who it was -- that's Jacqueline and Joyce Robbins, they're in Series of Unforunate Events!
