@@crystalesian Yeah, but if we're talking Arc 6, between that death and the "Crunch crunch" one (3 chapters before if I recall correctly), the second takes the lead
Yeah, I checked out the written work, and that death scene is ABSOLUTELY nightmare fuel. Normally, one wouldn't mind so much, what with dying agter that, thus not remembering a damn thing, likely. Subaru though....he will bale able to joyfully recall bunnies eating his ass, literally, for the rest of his days. I may not sleep safely just after typing out those words, so I must imagine Subaru has to at least woken up screaming his head off from dreams a few times.
I see that garfiel didn't get his morning lasagne. Anyway those rabbits are something else. The horror of that scene is very good in the anime but in the books it's something else the detail it goes into might make MIA blush. From what I remember from the books the rabbits kept him alive as long as possible. Even after being blinded and his limbs devoured. They avoided his vital organs for as long as possible so he could still feel their nibbling fangs for a long time. They would enter through a place no-one wants to be entered by a man eating rabbit.
I always thought Garfiel was really heartless here but now that I think about it he probably thinks Subaru is an archbishop of the witch's cult and therefore anyone fighting to protect him is a cultist and we saw how brutally we killed all the witch's cultists last season so like it kinda makes sense. Like in his mind he's killing a bunch of genocidal maniacs. To be honest this should be pretty obvious but I just never really thought that hard about his perspective here because of how cruel he was being. Also I love the comparison to how we met Rem and Ram!
he's only sure that subaru is a witch cultist. the villagers of arlam and everyone else who helps him out like ram, he doesn't consider witch cultists or maniacs. garfiel says subaru has a way with words that made him "deceive" everyone into trusting him. from here on it's season 2 spoiler territory: when garfiel goes beast mode, he doesn't have much self-control like frederica and relies on animal instinct fueled with his anger to turn a blind side to the murders he does to protect the sanctuary. he's never killed anyone with his own human hands because he's rather weak-willed and a big softie. he couldn't even kill otto before ram intervened and he went beast mode again. his first real kill was at the end against elsa.
The WN seems to make it clear that Garf loses rational thought each time he transforms. I think he's avoiding feelings of remorse and responsibility by letting his tiger form do the killing. But you're right, he had to be suspicious of all these people on Subaru's side.

What you should remember about Garfiel is 1) in his full transformation he chose to completely lose himself in instinct and after that point basically has no control and 2) several motivations lead him to choose that before he kills anyone.
