      Pulse is the best, but pretty much any live version of CN has an awesome solo. Even in the current day, Gilmour can still knock it out of the park - see the 2016 Pompeii concert, for example. And the one I recorded at the Royal Albert Hall (sorry, yes, I'm one of them...) which was the very last performance of CN on the 2016 tour. It was insane!

    • @balakrishnanlakshmanan9852
      @balakrishnanlakshmanan9852 Pƙed 3 lety +9

      Unpopular opinion, of course. Nothing, not even the Pulse version comes close to the original 2nd solo. The former is a virtuoso tour de force as a standalone, concert performance but the essence of Roger Waters' vision is found only in the original

    • @balakrishnanlakshmanan9852
      @balakrishnanlakshmanan9852 Pƙed 3 lety +5

      Gilmour's tone, the harmonics, the delays and the sustains in the original is just on a different universe, always staying fidel to the crux of the song. It's in perfect harmony with Roger Waters composition. This is the real deal. Sorry, just butting in here because the original is the forgotten child, eclipsed by its more popular but less fidel Pulse sibling :)

    He does refer to a fever as a child. But this is talking about a member of the band who was sick before a concert. The doctor gave him an injection to get him through the show. He felt numb.....cut off from the rest of the band. It was not a good feeling. You can tell they’re talking about an injection when they say ‘just a little pinprick”....and the detail of the little percussion sound to mimics a pinprick.

      Love and respect is good but it also is bad.

    It's true the song is inspired by an incident with Roger before a concert where he had to be given something to get him "going through the show" but in context of The Wall album it is the character Pink, a rockstar descending into madness, that is in need of this medication, and Roger Waters' vocals here is that of the doctor brought in by his agent to administer the drug. The final guitar solo captures all of the pain anger and desperation of Pink's mind at this point, in ways that words cannot even come close. I first heard it just over 40 years ago, and if you're anything like me it will thrill, haunt, and amaze you for the rest of your years.

    • @jeffdietz630
      @jeffdietz630 Pƙed 3 lety +1

      And it was reflective of the angst and anger of Waters following the Animals tour. The character Pink is fictional (but was an allegory to Waters) but the building of walls is a self defense mechanism for all his life's traumas including fame and life on the road. Some of the Wall is being built to shelter Pink/Waters from fans/fame.

    • @mgeyer1370
      @mgeyer1370 Pƙed 3 lety

      @@MrJlc93 Wikipedia: Writing
      The chorus progression was written by guitarist David Gilmour, who recorded a wordless demo.[citation needed] The verse and lyrics were written by bassist Roger Waters. The lyrics were inspired by Waters's experience of being injected with tranquillisers for stomach cramps before a Pink Floyd show in Philadelphia on the 1977 In the Flesh Tour. "That was the longest two hours of my life," Waters said, "trying to do a show when you can hardly lift your arm." The song had the working title "The Doctor".
      For the chorus, Gilmour and session player Lee Ritenour used a pair of acoustic guitars strung similarly to Nashville tuning, but with the low E string replaced with a high E string, two octaves higher than standard tuning. This tuning was also used for the arpeggios in "Hey You".
      Waters and Gilmour disagreed about how to record the song; Gilmour preferred a more grungy style for the verses. Gilmour said: "We argued over 'Comfortably Numb' like mad. Really had a big fight, went on for ages." In the end, Waters' preferred opening and Gilmour's final solo were used.
      To write the two guitar solos, Gilmour pieced together elements from several other solos he had been working on, marking his preferred segments for the final take. He used a Big Muff distortion and delay effects on the solos.

  • @brianemmanuelgrey9276

    Exactly! Is this the greatest lyrical line ever written? I can't think of better, "When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse, out of the corner of my eye, I turned to look but it was gone, I can not put my finger on it now, the child is grown, the dream is gone..... I have become comfortably numb." Gilmour and Waters publicly fought about the guitar solo and the final out come was "we" the listeners won that argument. It takes great attention and love of sound, to "hear" the greatest guitar ever recorded, which I believe is in the hidden depths of that musical accident? miracle? one take recording of, "The Wind Cries Mary" by Jimi Hendrix. Just as Chas Chandler only give 20 minutes recording time for Jimi's new song that he wrote the night before and Jimi's band mates never heard or even tried to play before, Waters pressure on Gilmour, like Chandler's on Jimi released a fire that forged diamonds. That said, David Gilmour in this ineffable solo has this same contact, but he brings big pieces up to the surface so that you can readily access it, everyone has tried to do this, but here Gilmour has done it. Waters only wanted something to match the gift of that synaptic storm released by the crushing realization that we were deeper and better people when we were children. Gilmour delivered Everest to Waters K2.. Thank You BroAction, your reaction took me back to when I had my Bro's when I was not so alone with my thoughts.

David Gilmour's playing is just dripping with emotion, not flashy or over the top, just the notes that are needed. It makes me smile that this great music is still moving people 40 years later, thanks again to you both. You have a new subscriber.

    The chorus progression was written by guitarist David Gilmour, who recorded a wordless demo.[citation needed] The verse and lyrics were written by bassist Roger Waters. The lyrics were inspired by Waters's experience of being injected with tranquillisers for stomach cramps before a Pink Floyd show in Philadelphia on the 1977 In the Flesh Tour.[6] "That was the longest two hours of my life," Waters said, "trying to do a show when you can hardly lift your arm."[7] The song had the working title "The Doctor".[8]

    Would love to see you guys react to the movie! One way to think of this song is to think of the first verse being about Syd Barrett being checked into a mental institution and the doctor making him comfortable, but numbing his emotions. This hurts the band so much to see him numb like this; not the guy they knew for so long. Then the 2nd verse could be the irony of knowing Syd is medicated and numb but one of the band members is shooting up before the show and making himself comfortably numb as well. Both want or need an escape from their problems and find it through drugs in different ways. They both just end up numb instead of feeling good.
    I know this isn't the real story of the song but one thing I love about music is that you can sometimes see another story in there if you have an imagination.

    So... The 1st David Gilmour solo of this song has slid into your brain and now you ARE the guitar... Trust me... By the time you get to the 2nd solo you will no longer be able to escape... Then the ride becomes an exquisite crash of a 30 foot wave of the ocean into your soul... Or something like that... :) I'm 61 and the music of the late 70's was my late teen sound track! Welcome into my mind... Mwah hah hah hah... LOL Enjoy the journey guys! BTW... David Gilmore was (is still) great! But, there are others... Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) 'Sultans of Swing' or 'Money for Nothing', Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen) 'Eruption', Tom Scholtz (Boston) 'More Than a Feeling', Joe Walsh (The Eagles) 'Life's Been Good', Brian May (Queen) 'Bohemian Rhapsody', Steve Lukather (Toto) 'Rosanna', Neil Schon (Journey) '(pick a song!)', Peter Frampton (Humble Pie) 'Show me the Way', Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) 'Stairway to Heaven'... Yeah... The 70's was super rich in great music and brain ripping solos! :)

    ...the meaning of the song: life is out there; I prefer to face it and let it hurt me, than lose all sense of feeling. Roger Waters, usually wrote lyrics based on real life events. Yes, the pain he was undergoing from touring was taking a toll on his body, so the band physician gave him a sedative (pin prick) and was so loopy during the concert, he couldn't feel the audience. Hence why he says, "your lips move, but I can't hear what you're saying". Later on the years. Individuals preferably used the fact that he was giving a shot of heron, a fix, to get through the show. Its open to interpretation, but the opening line i wrote is directly from Roger Waters describing the album: The Wall 🎾💯😎

    • @hihoktf
      @hihoktf Pƙed 3 lety +1

      He was given a tranquilizer for stomach cramps. And although it is part of the genesis of the song, it's not what the song's about. In the context of the album, it's about "Pink" being in a catatonic mental state, having built a metaphorical "wall" around himself.

    • @kaimiloab.1032
      @kaimiloab.1032 Pƙed 3 lety +1

      @@hihoktf... you do know that tranquilizers are sedatives, right? In a MTV show back in 1988: Headbangers Ball, Roger Waters himself describe being distant from the audience in a show in Berlin, where the line, "your lips move, but I can't hear what you're saying" was dubbed... because if there was one thing he enjoyed was the crowd singing back his songs. Now you may have your rendition of what happened, but I know what I remember hearing after Riki Rachtman asked him about that particular scene in the movie đŸ€™đŸœ

      @@kaimiloab.1032 I'm not sure we're disagreeing as much as clarifying. My complaint has more to do with the focus on the "drug". As your original line stated, Roger is speaking to mental issues, not drug issues. I agree Roger had various experiences that influenced the song and album. I also agree that "Pink" is given an unspecified drug, but it is to rouse him from his catatonic state, which is the point. It's just that over and over I see the backstory of the genesis of the song told as if it's what the song is "about", but, in the context of the album storyline, that misses the point. đŸ€™

    Many of Pink Floyd’s albums are meant to be listened to from start to finish. In order to fully digest these songs it’s best to give it a listen all the way through. On The Wall, if you listen very closely it starts where they “left off” 😉

  • @claudepage6214
    @claudepage6214 Pƙed 3 lety +1

    This song without the other songs on this album may raise more questions than answers. You see, The Wall album is a story from the first song to the last, a kind of rock opera.
    Briefly, it’s the story of a rock star (Named Pink) who tries to escape the trials of life, (by isolating himself behind a wall that he erects around himself). Pink’s emotional journey into the past is interrupted when his management team breaks into the hotel room and has a doctor inject him with a drug that will snap him out of psychological malaise, ensuring that he can still perform at a concert later that evening.
    Although many people think this song is about drug abuse, (Comfortably Numb), is more personal to Roger Waters real life experience. In an interview given to Jim Ladd from KLOS radio in Los Angeles around 1980, Waters said that much of the song comes from something that really happened one evening when, in order to allow him to perform in Philadelphia, the doctor gave him a sedative for a severe stomach ache. On the stage, his hands were numb (My hands felt just like two balloons) and his vision blurred (A distant ship smoke on the horizon). And it was out of this experience, (and the infamous spitting incident in Montreal 1977) that one of the main themes of The Wall album came about: the disconnect between the public and the band. “That was the longest two hours of my life, trying to do a show when you can hardly lift your arm.” Roger Waters, Bass player.

    Love the less talk moto 👍👍👍. Enjoy the music guys. Dig deeper into Pink Floyd's earlier stuff, like: 'Cymbaline', 'Careful With That Axe Eugine', 'Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun', 'Echoes' - audio version, 'A Pillow of Winds', 'One Of These Days', 'Mother', 'SORROW' - from the "Pulse" concert in '94, etc. If you want to here David Gilmore play that heavy guitar sound but EVEN BETTER, listen to "SORROW" from the 'Pulse' concert the Intro and outro's are amazing! Oh plus there is an epic guitar solo in the actual song itself!!!
    Don't forget...when you world turns to shit and you've had a crappy day, you come home, pour a scotch (or similar), or glass of red, drink that, pour another, drink that, then pour another one and go turn off all the lights.
