    Slots, you ask. You may have noticed we didn't mention the slots (aka fixed slats) that come with the Timber Evolution in our review. This is because we do not use them. We find that they make the wings more fragile in transport, reduce aileron effectiveness, and add unnecessary weight to an airplane that's already too heavy. At the RC scale, full span slots don't aid in flight at higher angles of attack the same way they would with a full-scale sized airplane. Reducing aircraft weight and/or adding camber to the wing is what is most effective for smaller RC aircraft that fly at a lower Reynolds number. Ultimately, *in our opinion*, we find that the Timber Evolution flies better without them after flying it the way we do.

    *Update: after extensive flying (bush/pattern/3D/etc) over hundreds of flights on two Turbo Timber Evolutions, there’s two reasons we no longer suggest this airplane. 1: We rarely fly them anymore since the FunCub NG effectively replaced the Timber as our go to current production bush plane. 2: The Timber Evo has an legit Achilles heal in addition to the gear springs…the plastic motor mount. After lots of flying, nose overs, prop strikes, etc, the plastic motor mount eventually fatigues and will crack and break. Once this happens, the fuselage is totaled because there is no replacement motor mount - you have to buy an entirely new fuselage. Check out our review on the FunCub NG as a great alternative.*

      And i just bought TTE 2 days before i saw your video on FunCub NG. Also heard someone had probldm with mount...it disconected from plane during flight.
      FunCub seems similar on paper to FMS P18 1300mm.

    • @TailHeavyProductions
      @TailHeavyProductions  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Unfortunately they really aren’t that similar from a feel in flight standpoint. The FMS is literally twice as heavy wing cube loading wise and less capable from an acro standpoint as well.

    Best review of the Turbo Timber Evolution on CZcams by far! Living in Southern Africa I’ve been shopping between the Timber X and Evolution but gotta say this video sold me on the Evolution for it’s STOL and backward thrust capabilities. Definitely going to get the extra springs and prop, thanks for that!

    I got the Timber X as my "After trainer". It had very similar issues, and that battery hatch on the bottom was ass, but it was also a great plane. I designed and 3-D printed a small bracket to keep the gear from ground roll, or bouncing inward to hard, after the original clips broke off.

The easily understandable and smooth voice along with the plethora of useful information makes you much better than the review sites that like to show off their flying skills while providing little information. I'd start with the most popular to date and the latest popular releases. I am going to subscribe to watch for this and see if your subscriptions go through the roof as I suspect.

    Just got one after flying an UMX spot cub S2 for a month plus some realflight practice, I wanted to go bigger. Love it so far ! However I could not use reverse thrust as i'm using an old DX7S that doesn't support forward programming, and I don't have a program box yet. i'll probably upgrade my transmitter soon so I can have telemetry and reverse thrust, it is a must when flying in tight spaces I think.

    I made a duct tape firewall ram air mod under the front cowling to force more air under the battery and over the esc. I almost never get heat warnings anymore. Hot day and 200' power climb from hover will still piss it off. I am definitely going to switch to your recommendation of prop. Still my favorite plane I have. I enjoy your videos. Very informative. The Evo is my second plane. I am way down on the food chain when it comes to piloting. Too many bad landings and broken springs. I designed and built my own gear with an inch of vertical travel. More forgiving and easily repaired. Heavier yes. The trade off is better for me.I also built an air scoop below and just behind the cowl. Directing air straight at the ESC. I wish I could share but I'm not savvy at that.

    I just bought one of these things. I am a warbird guy and will not be flying the piss out of my timber like you do here! Nice normal scale flying for me. I pulled that Spektrum garbage receiver out and got rid of it as soon as the plane came out of the box. I had bad luck with my old DX6 and DX8 about 10 years ago, so I will never trust Spektrum again. I switched to FlySky and never looked back. it was nice tho because I sold the receiver to some guy at the field for $100! So it sure helped drop the price on the plane! I only have about 5 flights on it so far and it is a nice plane. Crazy to see what you guys do with this thing! I will absolutely change the Prop as you recommend. I fly on 4000 mah 3s and get about 12 minute flights out of it. Just discovered your channel today so I will sub. Thanks for the vid!

      For your reference I have been flying spektrum only gear (minus batteries and chargers) all around since early 2000's and never had any failures of anything except crash damage.
      My current IX12 radio is slow as crap to load, but thats about it. I have owned dozens of spektrum foam models mostly warbirds, zero issues and still flying some that are long out of production.
      I also own some freewing models (jets mostly) from Motion RC which is awesome, and they are better quality foam and mechanicals but so so electronics.
      FMS which horizon bought out and incorporated are total garbage foam and even worse electronics, sold off the few FMS warbirds I had and will never touch another.

    I've been having so many overheating issues with this plane (even after moving the ESC forward etc as Horizon suggest, actually that made hardly any difference) I was getting constant telemetry alarms for overheating with the stock prop after about 4 mins flight. I couldn't fly the plane the way I wanted which was very frustrating. I followed your advice and switched to a 13x4 and wow, what a difference. I've been pushing it harder than I ever have, prop hanging etc and it just sits at +-70 degrees Celsius. I feel like I have a new plane. Thanks a lot.

      @Jack C Dunman Thanks for the sensible tip, I've just cut mine. Was amazed how strong the wire is, I couldn't cut with snippers had to use a dremel. Even though the springs are bent hopefully they will now last a while. Was going to remove them from the plane to cut but thought might struggle to reinstall them. Once removed it's obvious that they were doing the restriction. You've saved me buying new springs, thank you very much.
      I'm curious, I wonder how they put them together? the clips go round each other where you can't see. Now I can't help but wonder why the clips were there, all they'd do is restrict the spring- sort of a paradox. Thanks again!

Do you know if you can use the reverse thrust if you don’t use a spectrum receiver? I’m using a Radiomaster receiver. 2. What is the best bush plane that you can buy today (you said you think think the timber evo, is more of a Jack of all trades). Thanks for the info and keep up the awesome videos! One of my new favorite channels!!

    • @TailHeavyProductions
      @TailHeavyProductions  Před rokem +3

      Thanks! That's a great question. I believe that in order to utilize the SMART functionality of the Spektrum ESC, you do need Spektrum TX and RX hardware. Hobby King does sell some reversing ESC's that have a separate plug that's signal only so you can use it with any radio on a two-position switch.
      The best purpose-designed bush plane in our eyes will always be the OG Fun Cub, but it's no longer produced.
      As of now, out of all US manufacturers, we'd argue the best STOL plane on the market is the 1300mm FMS Super Cub, despite its higher weight. We do want to give the Multiplex Fun Cub NG a shot, though, which is produced in Germany. We think it would be crowned the winner but can't say until we try it. Hard to get in the US, though. -Zach

    What a great review. I’ve had my original Timber for 6 years and zero issues so far. If anything after a while it gets a little boring to fly, no bad tendencies at all. Sometimes horizon makes a great product and then ruins it with future versions. Like the UMX Vapor “HP” which flew horribly compared with the original one.

    I own one of these and there are several that frequent my local airfield. One had a servo tear off the inner fuselage, killing the elevator. So there’s some non existent QA on properly mounting servos. I’ve also seen one owner loose the ailerons as a servo burnt out. The overheating is just really poor design. We find removing the spring pins on each end helps a lot. It’s fun to learn on but they really cut a lot of corners producing these things. I’ll be swapping the prop soon to get more run time

  • @TrailcamsRCPhotoFlying2000

    Great video - I really like your bush-flying ones. I bought an Evo, having had the original Timber before, and was unexpectedly slightly disappointed. You mention it in the video - it is just a little too 'floaty' and I couldn't get to land as short as a Tundra or Funcub, or the original Timber. Still a great plane - I wish I had thought try the 13x4 prop switch - that sounds great for more torque and less ESC load.

    • @TailHeavyProductions
      @TailHeavyProductions  Před rokem +1

      Thank you! We never did mention that it was "floaty" but that it can't get as slow because of the higher wing loading. "Floaty" is a term synonymous with a light airplane, not a heavy one. The only way to ensure the SLOWEST possible speed before reaching the airplane's 1G critical angle of attack would be to keep it as LIGHT as possible which is why we use the 2200mah 4s. It's the same philosophy even up to airliners - the heavier we are, the higher our approach speed, and the lighter, the lower. It scales down to RC, too. -Zach

Also think this is the first i have heard about the prop change but makes sense. also yes those springs on the gear suck not sure why they changed it from the stock Timber X and Night timber x i owned both and never had a spring break. a club member has broken 2 sets and finally he just went to hardware store and got regular springs and rigged it up and its been fine.

I find the best thing to do is find a big local hobbie store and order though their wait list if item's not in stock you'll get a relistic wait time and because they bulk order you'll get it faster than if you ordered it yourself. Given I'm in Australia Horizon is in America I waited 10 weeks for my TT Evolution 100% worth the wait, same hobbie currently has heaps of spares in stock for it aswell.

    Sadly to say I got one of the first updated Turbos out. It's still in the box. What happened is a wild B-Day present to myself story caused by a company my buddy is overly friendly with produced a limited run of his custom made replica Bi Plane he takes to shows which I think is American Shearson. They were primarily built in the early 1930's for crop dusting but the rest were lost in WWI. This thing is not a foam body plane it's an ABS body Gas motor plane. So what's my point? Once I started taking the pieces out of the box I laid the pieces together and it is a spectacular sight to see the thing unassembled and as I was putting it together naturally I needed a motor this that the other thing typical custom style kit plane. It did come with Futaba servos beautiful job they did on mounts for the servos and stuff so off I went yesterday to a distant Hobby Store called TRAINS & LANES NEAR NAZRETH/BETHLEHEM TWSP PENNSYLVANIA for my B-Day present to myself I bought the radio and engine plastic fuel line. When I got to the cash register I was up over $550 dollars and had to stop for gas for my truck which was another $109.00 so to say the least the Turbo is going to have wait in its box until dad has a few extra pesos. But the color scheme of this Bi Plane is awesome out of the box the parts and pieces just grab hold of your eye balls. I may decide to just hang this in my office after all that maybe only fly it on special occasions. It is that gorgeous. The Shearson Biplane was the first Biplane to have an enclosed pilot space. When it was used in WWI they used it primarily to drop bombs not as a fighter after all it was built as a commercial crop duster not a fighter plane. As far as I know Tony Palidino has the only one in existence. Although his technically not truly a replica almost every piece of the aged plane has so far been removed. About the only OEM pieces that still exist on it are the original landing struts the metal pieces of the tail wheel probably the metal cabin floor with the seating mounts and the metal engine cradle the motor sits in. The rest of it was all wooden and mostly it was all replaced because of age & fatigue.

    So, other than a Fun Cub, in your opinion, what is the best "Bush Plane?" I fly my Flite Test Bushwacker through paths and around trees just fine.

    • @TailHeavyProductions
      @TailHeavyProductions  Před 5 měsíci

      It's not that black and white. You can fly a Timber Evo around trees fine too - as long as there is a bit more room. The Fun Cub is over a pound lighter which means it can fly in even narrower and tighter spots than the Timber could since it's the same size but weighs way less (lower 1G stall speed). The Fun Cub NG is the only current market airplane in its size class that is as light as it is. There's no comparing - especially to the OG. We generally recommend either of those if budget permits, and then if not - the FMS 1300mm Super Cub as a good budget starter bush plane (but much heavier and not as slow).

  • @thenextcujo
    @thenextcujo Před rokem

    I have a turbo Timber and I will say that while putting the slats on did a bit to reduce its aerobatic performance, it did hell quite a bit with the slow speed performance. Have you tried putting them on? You’ll likely find a big different in the STOL performance if you do

      I started with a sport cub S2, it isn't anything crazy to fly, but it does give you a great sense of how an RC plane works ! and also, it is hard to break.. flew mine in a loop full speed directly to the ground on grass, not even a scratch.. After a month I went for a turbo timber evolution and can fly it easily ! I still use SAFE on landings just to make sure I don't bank it too much close to the ground, but you can easily flip it on and off on a switch !

      That plane is a bit out of our budget at the moment, but it would be a fun one for sure! Haven't looked into the wing loading or anything on it specs wise, but the giant scale STOL style plane we have been eyeing is the new 140" Turbo Bushmaster from Legacy Aviation. Having seen SupaTim fly it - it clearly fits the bill of LIGHT + STOL performance + an overall fun stick and rudder machine. -Zach
