Bulma: The Female Character | The Anatomy of Anime

- Bulma is one of the most iconic female characters in Dragon Ball, anime and pop culture across the globe. Despite sharing the spotlight with Goku, Vegeta, Gohan and a host of other compelling characters... She never has had trouble standing out.
Today I am taking a deep dive into her character, it's utility within the story and what troubles she faces in the industry. This is the anatomy of anime and we are discussing BULMA!

Bulma's 1st wish was marrying a "prince."
Well who would have thought this to actually happen.
Well Akira was always a genius.
Yet Akira cant remember trunks hair color
@@kingtyr Or Launch
Just because she married a prince doesn't mean that she gets a fortune but then when I first thought about Bulma's home, the little tip bits of information given in the early days of DB, I thought she lived in a wooden cabin of sorts and she found the first dragon ball in the roof forgotten, but then I see her home which was a bit strange yet kind of smart when it comes to rain water, then there is the family which is even stranger and at first glance, you would not think they were her parents.
I don't think they have ever married btw

Long story short: women don't have to act masculine to be heroes
@Mo'mina Makin max is saying that you dont need to be masculine to be a hero, anyone can
@Mo'mina Makin I think you're not getting the point. When he says women don't have to be the masculine definition of a hero, that's not implying they CAN'T do it the masculine way.
@Mo'mina Makin But what he is saying is that anyone can bleed and fight, you don't have to be a man or a woman
Bulma is an awesome character and doesn't get pushed into that narrative
@Mo'mina Makin yeah but they house wifed her

Bulma: Basically Goku’s big sister
rip shippers
@valentds I've never shipped them but even well after Vegeta and Bulma were a thing, Bulma still seems to look to Goku as the savior who can always bail everyone out of any given situation and save everything. Her first thoughts are always to Goku, not Vegeta. Again, i dont ship them but i think it speaks volumes about how close she is with Goku that she always thinks of him first.
Her and Nami honestly feel very similar in that regard, having virtually no romantic interests in their protagonists but seeing them as the primary saviors and emotionally closest friends they have.
Bulma's character development from a bratty, spoilt rich girl to an empathetic, kind-hearted, strong-willed, mature genius is second in importance and greatness only to that of Vegeta's in the entire series. The dragon radar, the time machine, the hardship and sacrifices raising Mirai Trunks in a dilapidated world, and of course last but definitely not the least, changing Vegeta as a person. Despite having a power level in the single digits, she is more important than 95% of the characters in a series centered around unworldly power.
dont even compare the future bulma with the present one.... The future version is the best version of bulma there is.... She is intelligent, caring and headsrong when it comes to matters at hand...
On the other hand the present bulma takes fucking 6 month old kid into the battle that might destroy the entire earth in android arc and it was purely her appearance that acted as a distraction that let gero flee. Dont even get me started on the freeza arc, that is the brattiest most heartless bulma i have ever seen and then there is cell saga; Gohan has just seen his father almost dying due to the virus. He has no idea if his father is even alive or in what condition he is in and this fucking stupid bulma drags that kid to her home first because she has to change trunk's diaper who shouldn't even be taken in such a dangerous fight!!!!!!!!!!!
If you fucking watched DB, you would know that present Bulna has played a huge role in the series and is a better mum than fucking Chichi.
@@zemox2534 yeah sure. Bringing your child who is not even an year old to a battlefield is the best motherhood I have ever seen

@@zemox2534 yeah I know. But saying bulma is a better mother is completely disregarding the story. Yes she is very smart and all but that whole family is dysfunctional and it was only in super that they are showing any care or live towards each other. Gasp, did you just say that they are weaker than the men?
Always found all 3, especially Nami, pretty annoying.
@@introgauge No, he didn't
Nami? No man, oda it is garbage with woman characters, only fanservice for virgin kids. They have 0 impact on the story now.
Female viewer here, Tbh bulma kinda the best handled female in dragonball, she isn’t shunned to the side the moment she has a kid and she has a life outside of her relationship with vegeta and is still able to contribute to the story of dragonball through being the tech expect who gives resources to the main cast aswell as being kinda a flawed character.
I love how supportive yet kinda vain and assholeish she is, like its nice to see a female with multiple flaws instead of being 100% perfect and boring.
I’m just glad she didn’t get treated like 18 of videl (still bitter about 18 especially since maron adds NOTHING to the dragon ball story so I wished she never got with krillin to begin with tbh,)
I completely disagree with you on Android 18.
Sure she also became a mother and somewhat pushed to the side, but she still has moments to shine considering she has a twin she can fight in coordination with.
Plus, it was said that DBS Season 2 would have a lot of fan service, one of those possibly being the females getting their moments that isn't just "look how good looking I am!"
18 still has moments to shine from time to time, could we get more out of her? Yes absolutely but she hasn't been completely ditched. She was in the tournament of power where we got some great moments out of her and her story in Dragon Ball FighterZ is the actual considered to be the *true* outcome ( was about to say canon but none of it is actually canon) Also for her, the stepping to the side does make far more sense. She was never a fighter, she had great power pushed on to her but she just wanted something stable out of life, she got that. She was done far less dirty than Videl or Chi Chi
@Tyzuma Yasuke Obviously you can't blame a fictional character for their actions fam. They're not real.
I’m glad she got with krillin, just wish they gave her more to do. Like let her do some damage in the buu saga, or at less be more active. But Eighteen did shine in the ToP as damn near a mvp as her brother
Prince Black Elf while at least with videl im not nearly as disappointed since at least theres some potential with pan and her looking up her grandfather that super could explore, id love to see goku training pan, whereas with maron.. she’s not a character, she’s a plot device to explain why the writers won’t let 18 fight with the z fighters and its kinda disappointing.
yeah chi chi got terrible treatment but at least it wasn’t that bad back in the day since bulma and launch were very different characters from her but now when literally every female now in dragonball is either op with no personality, suddenly becomes a stay at home housewife after having one kid.. it just seems like the writers are lazy.
Not that theres anything wrong with women who legit just wanna stay at home and raise kids, i think showing different women is fine, but when 18 and videl end up like that is a little bit disappointing.

You know the character importance to the series when they constantly change his haircut.
Bulma also changed clothes the most.
The thing I love about Bulma is, she has remained relevant to this day in the franchise. She has no super powers or anything, just her brains and tenacity, which aids the main characters in their journey.
Not so much in the Buu Saga.
its pretty lazy to just have a character be super tech savy or smart without really explaining it and a show off egocentric but also very ill prepared dumb in everyday situations like a nerd and very repulsive and selfish...I don't know it just rubs me the wrong way to have a female be so versatile just for interest...like sure bulma helps out but shes also naked or seductive a lot...why?..why cant she be the social nerd?..does she really have to be naked a lot or in scad clothing to be interesting?..
@@razkable Well first off, just because you're intelligent doesn't automatically mean you're socially awkward or a "social nerd" for that matter.
@@razkable She's the daughter of a known scientist and owner of CapCorp. You'd think it'd be natural for her to also be smart.

I’m half Japanese and I’ve live in Tokyo for the longest time, I just want to let people know that the saying about getting married before 25 for women is simply not true; perhaps it was many many years ago. Thank you for taking the time to read this
Thanks for that, perhaps different parts or perhaps Mark just read an article online and saw that quote?
That definitely adds in to Bulma’s persistence in trying to look and stay young. Perhaps that saying held true in the ‘80s, when Dragon Ball first started, or it was just some old cliche in Japanese society that Toriyama could play around with.
I feel like that the "standard" beauty in All continents and cultures is an appearance to look young and that needs to stop .
Jada Coombs yeah, but asian countries take it too far to be honest. It’s kinda weird to be obsessed with looking barely of legal age, you know what I mean?

Fan service isn't my favorite part of any anime I love so I guess I'm indifferent to it.
The problems most have with fan service is how it is used. There is nothing wrong with a little T&A but all to often it not only doesn't add to the story but takes away from it. When properly used it makes the world and characters feel more real. When badly used it is a case of "Thinking up plot is hard so how about boobies instead?".
There is actual porn with better stories than the mountains of lazy ecchi fan service series. Porn isn't known for story telling so when it does a better job that really says something about the quality of the writing for the fan service heavy series.

@Galv 2k22 'perfect' is sort of a strange.
@@john-olivierlukama1548 Yeah with that fucked up hairline.
I liked Bulma's general character growth throughout Dragon Ball, and to me was a great example of showing that characters not immediately present in the story (like when Goku goes off to beat the Red Ribbon Army or trains for a tournament) still have lives going on with other characters and their own experiences. After the later half of the Red Ribbon Army, she started to settle into the background as a supportive side character through the rest of Dragon Ball and Z, but it truly always felt, even up to present day Super, that she is an important member of the Z-Team with an entertaining personality and a dear friend to the gang.
Edit: Just wanted to add the point to this, that Bulma's character in Dragon Ball was a great step for female characters, but it is still just a step. I really wish Bulma was more prevalent in the series.
Did you not watch the cell, or buu arcs? Bulma was very relevent in those stories and still is!
@@tayojones9460 she is relevant then yes, but in terms of how relevant she is there compared to the original series is pretty night and day (minus the Android saga. Her with Vegeta and trunks was great). As for the buu saga...her character doesn't really change over the course and in terms of what she does, what I remember is she makes the Great Saiyanman armour, cheers Trunks on, sees Majin Vegeta kill a crowd, reserructs them and dies to Buu. Not much character interaction and development aside from maybe the Majin Vegeta stuff. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Only in the namek saga. She us awesome afterwards
For all the focus we've had on Goku, Gohan, and even Vegeta, we can't really overlook that. Bulma's been involved in some way in most, if not, all of the arc's main stories.
Be it as a plot device (the dragon radar, or connections to outer space via jaco and later whis), or the catalyst for the entire story, she's been relevant the entire time.
Sure, in some instances, it's contrived and forced, like getting the dragonballs stolen during the Broly movie, but at the end of the day, she's often involved BECAUSE of her intelligence. She made the dragon radar on her own, and started the story.
But at the end of the day: she's a plot device with skills she's willing to use, and they're used in natural ways. Nothing about bulma comes off as forced....
Well, except for coincidentally having a sister that had contact with Jaco and the space police. BUT this served to expand the universe for Super, so we have to accept it.
She tends to set off the arc and have Goku and Vegeta clean up the mess. I feel she's a great character as is. She's still integral to the story, even if it is only on occasion and comes off as a plot device. She's the most intelligent person around, and it's good to have her do things only SHE can do.
bulma didnt do anything in the first world tournament arc nor the training leading up to it nor the red ribbon army arc outside of some filler nonsense and then she didnt do anything in the tien tournament or king piccolo or post piccolo training or jr. last arc..she didnt do anything in the freeza saga or cell fight...she didnt anything vs bull either...85% of the time shes useless
@@razkable She did do stuff in the Red Ribbon Army arc, or don't you remember the Pirate Cave section? And yeah, although she didnt' do much in the Piccolo Daimaoh arc, so did most of the cast. Pretty much only Goku, Tien, Roshi and Korin had any relevance in that arc. And it's unfair to mention tournaments since she's not a fighter, all she can do is root for the heroes. As for your mentions of Freeza, Cell and Buu... well she does bring the radar and flies the ship to Namek, although I do admit she is very underused. But she helps a LOT during the Cell Saga. Heck, she's the catallyst of the entire arc, having created the Time Machine and all, she removed the bomb from 16 which, although caused him to not be able to blow up Cell, he would've probably killed every Z-fighter but Gohan, Vegeta and Trunks with the explosion anyway. In Buu Saga, again, only Goku, Vegeta, Mr. Satan and Dende really matter in this arc, everyone else either gets hyped up for nothing (Gohan, Goten, Trunks, 18, Videl, Tien, Krillin...) or straight up just hang out
And Super's been pretty consistent in keeping her relevant through its arcs, being the catallyst to the whole stuff in BoG, calling Whis to warn Goku and Vegeta about Freeza in RoF, finding the Super Dragon Ball in U6 Tournament, refuelling/ fixing the Time Machine in FT arc, getting the DBs stolen from her in DBS Broly and she'll probably be the one to gather the Z-Fighters to fight against Moro's forces in the GPP Arc

Bulma got hotter as she got older. All her different hair and dress styles are awesome which is a nice contrast to characters like Goku. She's also very feminine without being in your face about it.. One of my favorite scenes is when Vegeta returns to Earth and him and Bulma are going at it.. She knows he's a Saiyan and could easily kill her and everyone but she just does not give a fuck. Prolly cuz she sees a bit of herself in him. Personally, I'd love to see more Bulma and more Bulma and Vegeta. I'm fine watching a scene of two people talking even if the show is supposed to be "action" based. What people call filler, I just see as characters being them. Like Bulma, Krillin and Gohan on fake Namek is them having an adventure together before the shit hits the fan. Gohan and Krillin bonding so when Freiza kills him and Gohan flips the fuck out, we have alot to work with ontop of everything else, there's a more personal connection. Bulma can give us that personal connection with much of the story if done right.
Bulma is underrated because she was never a fighter but she was always one of the most important characters in the show. In dragonball, she was a main character. In Z, she was always part of the story even if she didn't fight. She invented time travel ffs and was pretty much the reason why the Android Saga even happened. She is also the biggest factor in Vegeta's redemption, and to this day, she is still a big character. Befriending even gods like Beerus and Whis.

@@xionmemoria if that's what those female characters wanted to do there's no right we have to tell them not to😁.but no it's what I said cuz when I talked to most of them that's what they complain about. Also it's 18 not 17. But what would you have all those women do? it isn't like they'd be any more useful than the other human characters. when it comes to money with Chichi, Goku gave her a hundred million zeni but she spent it all, probably because she used to be a princess and could buy whatever she wanted so she's not good with money.
@@xionmemoria I mean I don't like what happened to the female characters either I figured I figured when Goku and Chichi got together they'd be a superpower couple same thing with Gohan and Videl but nope. It's because mainly Toriyama said he's bad with female characters.
@@ChiChiLand299 Those characters only "wanted" to become worthless housewives because that's how toriyama wrote them. They're not useful (aka: in a fight, barring Android 18) because toriyama wrote them that way. Alternatively, toriyama could have written them as strong characters, who want to fight, and can fight. But he didn't, because he relegates his female characters to being things to give birth to new male fighters.
@@volaalov6254 yeah they have other functions with that. Like Chi-Chi's the reason why Goku became Master roshi student because she introduced him to him so Goku could see his power. she's also the one of course who gave him his kids who saved the world and she's the one that kept him grounded.
Love your take on story telling man your videos are masterpieces
Another great video
It brings a smile to my face every time I get a notification from this channel
I never really had a problem with anime girls showing off their breasts and hips and stuff like that as long as they have a point aside from just eye candy.
Have you watched Kill La Kill? If not, I highly reccomend it. The girls get more powerful by wearing revealing outfits.

So, nudity makes you stronger on this planet?
Ok. Sadly she was a fucking child when she did that in the beginning of the series.
Charles Entertainment Cheese who did what when ?
Charles Entertainment Cheese I was speaking in general not specifically about Bulma
In my opinion walking into a battlefield with your infant child for no real reason is one of the stupidest things a person can do.
These videos always make me feel some type of way. 😭 Amazing work again.
Great vid! Bulma's a wonderful character who deserves more.
Also RIP Hiromi Tsuru.
You blow me away with that thumbnail art each and every time I see it. Well done
Personally, I always loved bulma
Shes what me and the boys like to call "the brain cell owner"
Shes smart, shes confident, shes brave, and shes a really good mother and friend. Shes always had a place in the narrative and tbh the show wouldn't be as fun without her
Dude, your videos are fantastic and I love your analysis.
Great video and analysis of Bulma.
Also, Bulma has more than enough personality to carry a story arc.
I love how she flaunts her beauty and that she's in contol of her body and looks and will do what she needs to do to get what she wants. She's not shy at all in any way and she's not afraid to tell you like it is. She knows she's hot she knows she's smart so why not use it to her advantage. She's a genius and she's crazy confident.
Vegeta blocking the view of Bulma's naughty bits was probably the most wholesome and simultaneously hysterical edits I've ever seen.
Bulma is very dynamic and so recognizable. This is an excellent analysis of her character!

Omfg that Krillin TFS pose had me dying XD
Never expected Walter White to be mentioned in a Video about Bulma.
The music you use in your videos are always amazing
Ooh now I wanna hear about the stories you wanna see from Bulma and just Dragon ball in general. You should make a video about just your own story ideas. I'd love to hear them!
2nd best and most important Dragon Ball character.
Even I love more Android 18 XD
When talking about useful characters in the series it's 1. Who beats the big bad at the end of an arc. 2. Bulma. She's like that tag line from those old Mastercard Commercials. " You may not have the physical strength to kill a god, but for everything else, There's Bulma Brief"
Francisco Leyva Martin in terms of strength that’s debatable but in terms of who’s more useful when it comes to saving the world or saving friends, it’s absolutely Bulma. Vegeta’s ego has gotten in the way of saving the world on a few occasions
Francisco Leyva Martin she never saved the world directly but the world would have never been saved if it weren’t for her actions and yeah Vegeta sacrificed his ego later in the series but against Cell and the Androids his ego made the situation worse
Why are female characters always judged on how they represent women, while male characters are judged as individuals? I've never heard anyone talk about how Goku or Vegeta are positive or negative for men.
I think you need to do a google search pronto.
I too am curious
Because men on fiction have always been treated as people, but women have been treated as women, for better or worse, depending on the character.
A big part of that is because in spite of roughly 50% of the human population being female, In fiction it's almost never portrayed that way. Male characters (almost) always out number female characters usually by a couple times over. In a lot of fiction from the past 50 years alone there might be 1 woman in the entire story, and for the longest time that 1 female character would just be "The girl character". end of personality. Things have definitely been changing but it's hard to change it over night.
Because socially men and women are not seen the same way.
0:46 that artwork is FUCKING AMAZING.
Great Video Man! Ever since the Begining Bulma was the Main Catalyst for the Series from when she first made the Dragonball Radar started an Adventure that would take the World by Storm. And she had the Best Character Designs.
7:31 Ok, that had me chuckling for a while
She changed vegeta too, she has done a lot throughout the series.
This felt quite nostalgic great video
I always thought that a spin-off series or movie centered around Bulma would have a lot of potential for interesting storytelling. Great video as always Mark!

I mean, technically speaking, every main character would be dead if it wasn’t for Bulma.
I very much appreciate you making mention of how "REAL" Bulma feels as a character, as this has always been the reason that she's my favorite female character in anime, period. This was greatly helped in the english dub by her original voice actor, who i'm torn they removed, because she fit the character's personality pretty perfectly.
Hi Mark, I'm pretty sure that you won't see this comment but I want to say this anyway. I love your videos because their so informative and interesting.
Your videos have helped me with some of my ideas for a fan-story I've been wanting to write for a while. In fact, your content actually inspired me to write an informative speech on why desire and struggles matter to a story and how this mold could possibly be broken for my college public speaking class that I presented this Monday.
I'm glad to have found your channel, because your videos are both entertaining and informative. And your content can really help people understand that anime is more than just "Japanese Cartoons". That there are a lot of important writing steps and processes that have to be utilized correctly in order for it to be loved by it's audience.
TL;DR - I really enjoy the content you create, am glad to have subscribed and can't wait for your next video.
I love how it is revealed that she secretly finds the dragonballs every few years to wish herself 5 years younger so she can stay just young enough to keep up with Vegeta. Honestly I would do that exact same thing.
"Are we getting the most emotional story's from Bulma's character." A question we can ask about any character not named Goku, Vegeta, or Freeza.
Man, Bulma looks stunning in the thumbnail, thanks for the video Mark.
thanks for the text buzz in the video, I kept rewinding it and was going crazy
0:50 - I'm the type of person who hears _"female empowerment"_ and roles my eyes. Yet I still take an interest in female characters who are more than just boring, annoying, or condescending archetypes and, especially with anime, take an interest in and have an appreciation for female characters who are written well and play some sort of meaningful role in the story - and I've become rather jaded with all of the typical damsels and fanservice dispensers.
I don't think this a decisive topic, I just think It's handled in a divisive way by many of the people who immerse themselves in it, and those people are often overly averse to hearing out the other side...
When it comes to Bulma, she's a strange blend of archetypal fanservice and a unique and refreshing character. Now that you've pointed it out, I do see the ways in which her character journey has come second to that of others as well as her own role in the story, which is arguably on par with that of Goku's and makes her more integral than most of the fighters, even now - Not that it erases the fact that her character arc has gone largely ignored. It's especially sad with Future Bulma who could have easily had the most compelling story in all of DBZ if explored deeper.
It could be that Toriyama didn't much care to make it focus for her or it may be simply be a result of the priorities of Shounen genre, but it was a missed opportunity nonetheless.
In spite of all this, Bulma managed to remain one of anime's most iconic female characters and everyone can agree that she's totally awesome.
1:29 Bulma has some of those frieza genes
Finally the video I was waiting for!
Phylasvell already summarized everything that I love about the character. Bulma is the quintessential female character and not quite a role model, just a perfectly balanced organic character between flaws & strengths. Also prop for putting the 0:08 message at the beginning of the video and not at the end.
Christmas cakes might be the greatest burn I've ever heard in my entire life. Holy cow that made me laugh. Mark, I love your analysis videos! Keep up the excellent work.
What's a plot device?
*points to high school DxD*
Yeah I truly believe that anime could be a more respected medium, if there weren't so many pervy scenes of females. It's like a bunch of teenagers right this stuff sometimes
If you think that, you have not watched FMA, Bebop, Ergo Proxy, Paranoia Agent, Tatami Galaxy, Baccano, Howls moving castle or Ninja Scroll.
Well the show is written with teeangers in mind, no surprise. And Toriyama's a comedy writer first and action second
Yeah cause most of it is written by old men.
But that’s the point: people do not recognize the true quality of those amine series due to anime’s stigma of having e c c h i in them. Which is unfortunate.
Goes without saying that plenty of anime doesn't do this, but one if the biggest things holding writing in anime back are the cheesy and ridiculously long-winded exposition dumps that happen in attempt to totally explain everything as it comes up. Often comes off "game-y" which can be cool in some cases, but from a purely writing perspective, it isn't good.
This is why I support you Mark. There are too many people on youtube like Nux for example, who use Dragonball as the butt of jokes, misunderstanding the point of the scouter and power levels to the progression through struggle and finally how the characters fit in the story's plot, even if it seems simple at first glance. Up to the Cell Games, Akira put a lot of thought and effort into the series and its nice to see someone who does understand it for a change and speak on these matters. Seriously mean that.
I love Bulma, and now that you bring this up, it does make me sad that we don't see more of her. Even if she was originally created as a plot device and for fan service, Toriyama somehow pulled all of that together into a great character
