This is the most motivational gospel song I know of. It can really get me going. It fills me with a strange energy. Like it's being handed to me personally by the lord god himself. Of which he plucked from the secret garden of the most righteous of blessings.

Saw them in concert at my high school in the early 60s. Best one ever

My dad had all their albums---and would play "There's a Meetin' Here Tonight" religiously on our high fidelity stereo in the living room. He was such a fan of Joe & Eddie, that he contacted Eddie Brown in the late 1970s, and we had dinner with Eddie Brown and his family.
    What a sound.
They'll never be anything like Joe & Eddie again.
    RIP Joe Gilbert.

Wow, that's fantastic! My mother played their records over and over and over while I was growing up. I agree - there will never be anything like Joe & Eddie again!

Wow, that's a great story, your dad was a number one fan kind of guy. To make that dinner happen is awesome. How old were you when you had dinner with Eddie Brown? did you eat out at a restaurant? Was there conversation about the times of Joe and Eddie? i can't imagine Eddie's pain on hearing and adjusting to the loss of Joe, as long as they had been together and working so hard on the same goal.
I was lucky to come of age musically at the beginning of an amazing variety of brilliant creative artistic work of so many artists, all feeding off each other and rolling like a hot snowball, picking up size and speed and momentum.
It started with top 40 hit radio, AM radio was all there was, and what was then "Oldies," or oldies but goodies, were from the 50s, quite amazing in their own right, and from that it took off, for me it was 1962 pretty much, the beginnings of motown detroit music, surf music started that year, and there was the beginning of a brief but influential folk wave on commercial radio, in 62, Kingston Trio and Peter Paul and Mary, just building in 63.
i don't remember what year i first heard Joe and Eddie, probably the second half of 63 when There is a Meeting Here Tonight and What's that I Hear were getting air play and were hits. Because of the folk wave that year (Pete Seeger had a number one ! hit with We Shall Overcome backed with a gospel choir and we all heard the first of Bob Dylan from Peter Paul and Mary's cover of Blowing in the Wind and Don't Think Twice), lots of kids got guitars and were learning to play popular folk songs.
I was lucky to see Joe and Eddie live that year at UCLA Royce Hall when i was 14, it was their own solo concert. i think it was the first concert i ever saw. They were big by then. it might've been early 64, Kennedy and Oswald had just been killed and kids really looked to the music to make sense and if not sense, then escape, which was the amazing effect of the Beatles which came at that time with all the other new British music that came with it and came to stay, it was the beginning of the end of the folk hey day in pop music, but it was a permanent effect.
i remember where i was when i heard that Joe Gilbert died, driving my $50 car when i was still in high school, alone on the freeway, it was on the news. 1966. Our culture was moving deeply into the effects of painful losses through death, the destruction of great beauty. Joe's death felt that way to me, unacceptable and yet there it was. At least their work together, which opened hearts, was experienced for a time. that's all that was left, and there were a lot more violent deaths still to come, against the background of the building up vietnam war at that time. a different kind of music to express the subculture of that generation was being born, never disconnected from what gave birth to it.
      thank you Joe and Eddie

I have loved them and this song since the 60s. It is an incredible piece to dance to and think about simultaneously. Such a wonderful piece. So sad about what happened to Joe. I wonder what it would have been like had they been able to continue.
