Nice song. However, there is nothing glorious about British colonialism in India. And the storyline of the opera makes me cringe: A girl dying out of love for her oppressor who moves on to marry some chick from his own country. A white man's wet dream. Anyways, good performance.

"Dialogues of the Carmelites" comes to mind, though of course some would find the religious and martyrdom aspects objectionable.

Therefore you should always get familiar with the storyline before you go to an opera performance. Nowadays you find the stories online. I love opera music and it truly touches my heart. But as you said the depictions of women and non-white people is often very disturbing.

I watched Anna Netrebko and Elina Garanca perform this and described them as liquid silver and mercury. Sumi and Ah-Kyung are liquid gold and liquid platinum, melding, mixing, melting my heart. Bringing tears to my eyes for the first time. Just pure perfection.

I love Sumi Jo. I hadn't heard Ah-Kyung Lee before and I love her timbre. They blend beautifully. I think Joan and Marilyn or Jane are my favourite two, but the balance of these two voices is just beautiful. Too often the mezzo is overshadowed - its so delightful to hear Ah-Kyung Lee. Love it.
Honestly I know everyone loves Sumi-Jo, but I come back here time after time for Ah-Kyung Lee. Something about her voice and expression just makes this for me.

I have listened to every version of this and in IMHO This is the greatest. Ah-Kyung Lee is as near perfection as it is possible to get and Sumi Jo is Sumi Just, just about perfect.

Without doubt Shekinah, it is the first version the first soprano is not over powering the Mezzo. The sound in both of their voices intertwined beautifully to create something just breathtaking and magical. Long live music that delight our hearts.

Have you heard Sabine Devielhe and Marianne Crebassa? As beautiful as this rendition is (Sumi and Ah-Kyung ) I believe Sabine and Marianne may be better. Their voices are better suited to each other, and their pronunciation and intonation are a bit better.

That's also my feeling.. as a french man, I understand the lyrics in this performance, much better than when sang by some french (and even famous) singers..

Have you heard Sabine Devielhe and Marianne Crebassa? As beautiful as this rendition is (Sumi and Ah-Kyung ) I believe Sabine and Marianne may be better. Their voices are better suited to each other, and their pronunciation and intonation are a bit better.
