I just ordered my materials for the fly! While I've tied previous versions and had success with the black and lime version, I'm looking forward to the O.G.! Also, guys online and in the shop were super helpful in getting a detail on the order straightened out. Real deal right here!

Nice one! Added this to the "tie for next season" list - not much in the way of trout close by but it should be great for bluegill!

Nice! I learned that hackle method from Al Beatty, who in a slightly different application, called it "climbing the hill" (I think). Nevertheless, a solid way to bulletproof your flies!

I’ve been looking for my next fly to keep me occupied tying now that it’s getting colder. I think this is it! Thanks for the video Cheech.

Great tie! Is coachman more chocolate brown than the reddish browns? Seems to be a preferred shade for a lot of big flies. I tied a bunch up this summer in various shades, but I didn't like how the legs turned out and now I see why. I think those flatter legs you have in look a lot better.

Benjamin Johnston the coachman is more reddish brown. Glad you like the bug! It’s a fun tie for sure.

Love the hackle technique! Is there a color version of the grumpy that works well in the pacific northwest? Or does the yellow and red work everywhere well?

Mike Henderson yellow red is THE color.

Have you tried tying this using yellow z-lon instead of yellow floss?

Is having coachman brown hackle versus 'regular' brown hackle a must? I have some ginger/brown, but not sure it'll work. Any work I can do to it with a sharpie?
TIA. Looking forward to tying this one.

Kenneth Van Dyken ginger brown will work fine.

@@FlyFishFood Thanks. I will say though, I'm willing to buy the coachman if it makes a difference. just curious. I recall in the bionic ant video you said it worked better? Or something along those lines?

Kenneth Van Dyken yeah. Coachman brown has almost fiber optic qualities when it hits the sun. Such a great color.
