*Wizards actually makes a good product* Fires all the people on the design team.
mtgmaniac wait what
LOL Promotes them to work with MaRo who takes their ideas for his own...
mtgmaniac oh my god yes
This explains a lot
A box of 30 basic Islands. Except the art is actually one continuous image that's an homage to Monet's Water Lilies
I'd snap buy that :o
I'm currently on foil Lorwyn Islands 6 (the ones with the flowers).
Well they can do one of each basic snow land at $30. Take it or leave it.
Can't believe you've predicted Secret Lairs, lmao
These days it would come out through Hasbro Direct
For $600.
80% of the cards will be available in standard sets released around the same time.
But they'll have "special" arts ! Surely that's a good reason to ask players hundreds of dollars for a few cards? =D
And have ftv foiling.
I feel like Hasbro Direct is another way to say "Sells out immediately and cost 3 times as much on the secondary market" to quote the professor
We need a Commander's Arsenal 2
TheMonyarm you know new Wizards is incapable of making product to help its players
PulseTheRabbit destruction 100
Wait a minute, this is just a relabeled From the Vault Armageddon. WotC!!!
At least we have Anthology.
Not Your Average Nothing Agreed! Amazing that the best commander product is a greatest hits album.
Aaahhh, 2012. What a year! Thanks for another great video Professor!
The year the world ended I've heard
When smosh made food battle 2012
Sylvan library, rhystic study, duplicant? What an era!
Today they would give us Elemental Bond, Think Tank and Mirror of the Forebear, lol.
I honestly think Commander's Arsenal was WotC saying: "You think we don't know what you want? We do know exactly that, but satisfying our customers doesn't satisfy our purses. However, teasing you a little bit; that IS satisfying for us."
I've lost my hope regarding WotCs policy; them going back and forth between saying they want a "healthy tournament enviroment" and "let the casual players enjoy themselves".
All I want is WotC realizing that, yes, your old college players most likely have good-paying jobs now and you have a huge amount of people that is still going to be able to pay for your products but PLEASE remember how it all started: with COLLEGE and SCHOOL PLAYERS that played during recess.
I can imagine the fraction of young players is furthermore shrinking and WotC clearly is at fault, all by themselves, because every LGS I've been into in Germany is trying and trying their hardest to be appealing to young players.
WotC, please fix yourself.
U should try pokemon tcg or cardfight vaguard
OHHH, BOY. They went Sauron levels of Evil after this, haha
How about wizard would do an updated version of this? Commanders Spellbook!!
20 Bucks, easy affordable, nice new artworks of staples and I don't need everything in foil.
Many players have ideas and commanders but miss the staples like sol ring, command tower, the good boardwipes outside white, some tutors outside black and much more...
Give newer players a chance to get these cards, so they can built theri first or second commander deck from scratch and it won't be so clunky...
I don't want to strip a precon commander deck every time I need some staples or do another pricy order of singles...
With new Artworks it would be a seller...especially for Sol Ring and Command Tower
I think so too. I'm a bit weary about the same artwork of the cards which pops up every game multiple times.
Alternate art foil Sol Ring would move boxes. Thought Vessel, Skull Clamp, Clyclonic Rift, Phyrexian Arena, and Blasphemous Act are all cards that new players need that really sting after already dropping $30-40 on a precon. If it was packaged like the Jace Spellbook, I know I'd buy one if even half were cards I didn't already own
Tobias Leon Haecker "commander staples" "20$ bucks" ah I see so it comes with two thirds a cyclonic rift and nothing else
Cyclonic rift was for a long time around 6 Bucks. This could be a reprint to reduce the rising price. Why not?
Or put in the second best blue boardwipe, a toxic deluge, some of the mirage tutors. I think a spellbook printed in big numbers for 20 could easily hold value for up to 40 bucks. And then it would be totally ok, if just one is foil. Or make it a 30Bucks and give us 15 non foil staples and one of those fancy life counters.
I'd also like to see something like a format foundation product. Like a box of cards $5 and under that are just widely used stuff. Like Sol ring, Command tower, basic ramp spells, putrefy, swords to plowshares, etc.
How does that song go again? Oh right... *jams on his piano* Don't know what you got 'till it's gone!!
Raaanch
pave paradise and put up a parking lot? 😋
Surprised they haven’t done another one like this since. These would fly off the shelves! Modern and Commander both would be great🤩
The only worry would probably be that no matter how high the print run...mass-buyers would keep them off shelves and inflate the prices. Such products should be LGS only and 1 per person tied to the DCI-card
Modern arsenal would be arcbound ravenger, bloodbraid elf, lightning bolt, turmagoyf, thoughtsieze and what else? I'm trying to hit one card from the top decks
Modern arsenal is harder since for modern you need a playset of the good cards. But the idea for Commander is fucking fantastic.
“You want to sell packs? Put the cards in the packs!” -Professor at SCGCon.
I do not need supplemental products at all. I need boosters that contain staples of formats. Why is this so freakin hard?!
But don't you like playing with useless jank in limited? Where is the fun in playing with powerful cards that you will want to keep after you open them? Can't really have that can we?
I know right? Imagine playing with actual good cards that make the game fun to play. It's my personal nightmare...
The problem with the hasbro direct shit is that that isnt really a supplemental product, you are forced to buy it with 2/3 of a regular box, not just the cool walkers
Jordan Klein Feels like the buy-a-box promo cranked up another notch because they don't need to prepare as many packs lol.
I’m so happy I saw this because I just finished my first commander deck. It is called “Wait, what?” The commander is cromat and it has no theme
Ah the perfect cEDH deck
Ahh. The legendary and rare five color weird stuff lives on. Good to know.
I wish Wizards would just try to make money instead of dancing around ashamedly at trying to make money. This and other products could make them and their shareholders a fortune. Purposely making limited print runs is like Famous Amos cookies failing to meet demand. It's like planning to fail. The profit motive and player satisfaction are not mutually exclusive goals.
They try to make money so hard, the problem is they don't know how.
I contend they're trying to do that, but they're trying to do so in a way that's sustainable (they could easily cash grab and Magic would be dead in two years). The problem is that the game that serves many masters. The investors don't want products like this because it hurts their investment. The casuals want more products like this because they actually play the game. The Spikes don't care one way or the other because WotC should be spending its resources fixing Standard (this applies no matter how healthy or unhealthy Standard is at any given time).
WotC is in the unenviable position of no matter what they do, some big chunk of players will think outs the weirdest thing ever. I tend to be oretty forgiving when I think they screw up.
Zomburai45 the worst offense lately is the Global Series decks. I was disappointed in the playability and then I read WotC’s statements that it was intended to be unplayable. Such a waste of excellent art and with a mandate to fail no less.
@@Zomburai45 Thank you for stating what I've wanted to say. And I've wanted to say it in response to a number of video reviews. MTG "fails" because they have too many conflicting interests related to their product. I want to go in depth, but don't have the time. (And I love the Professor's work, fwiw.)
If tanking prices of once-expensive cards killed games, yu-gi-oh would have died out a decade ago.
I actually just got my first commander deck, seeing the cards in this gave me new ideas for cards I already have in my folder. I love brewing!
Nice to see you back Prof, I was getting worried for a while.
This "blinged out cards with a limited print run and limited availability" thing seems familiar somehow...
Erica Savage But somehow also more poorly done than Arsenal...
WOTC watches this video - makes a Brawl Arsenal.
Frontier Arsenal lmao
Don't give them ideas!
I would take it. Might be able to salvage something to use in commander
Only this time around, they try not to make the same mistakes, so they make the Brawl Arsenal price tag 129.99 and they produce such a limited print run that only 1/10 of every LGS gets to sell one.
Brawl will be dead when Dominaria rotates as it is the best source for legendary creatures right now for the format unless they alter the rules.
Heck yeah dude! Friday nights is awesome! (Love the little craterhoof behemoth 😉)
You are a genius! I would have never imagined such cool videos back in 2003 when I first started playing MTG.
Great video!
I'd love to see an annual Commander's Arsenal. What I'd love even more though, is an annual Commander Deck Builders Toolkit. Rather than a handful of boosters and a pack of lands, it could include a pre-set list of cards. There we'd find commonly needed cards such as mana rocks, lands, and spot removal spells. It could also include some "chase" reprints that are generally needed in commander, such as Rhystic Study or Chromatic Lantern.
The Commander Deck Builder's Toolkit could also be themed, much like the pre-con decks. These could provide a core of cards that help build decks around a couple different themes. It would be a great place for wanted reprints to drive sales. Can you imagine a toolkit that we know has a Sensei's Driving Top and a Scroll Rack in it coming 3-6 months after Commander 2018 got into our hands?! It would be an opportunity to build hype for a commander product (the decks) and maintain momentum by having a supplemental product that improves the decks a few months later.
for real, you‘re the best man. Thanks for everything Professor.
I totally agree with you, especially on the card sleeves. I think I still have mine somewhere, but I'll never use them again. Those edges tore up so quickly...
Fantastic! I want an updated one!
I love the life counters from Anthology, that were based on these.. SOO good!
Great video professor, keep up the good work!
Perfect supplemental product in my opinion? Needed reprints to reduce secondary market prices.
Cards in commander that go in every deck but are prohibitively expensive, such as:
Sensei's Divining Top, Scroll Rack, Thran Dynamo, Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, Maze of Ith, Chromatic Lantern, Shocklands and Fetchlands, Coalition Relic, Gilded Lotus, Rhystic Study, Grim Monolith, Gaea's Cradle, the "Sword of X and Y" cycle, Umezawa's Jitte, Vedalken Orrery, Cavern of Souls, Snapcaster Mage, any of the expensive Tutors, Ancient Tomb, Phyrexian Tower, and Doubling Season.
As a Sliver player I'd also love to see a "Sliver Toolbox" supplement that includes some of the essential slivers such as Manaweft Sliver, Galerider sliver, Harmonic Sliver, Quick Sliver, Crystalline Sliver, Heart Sliver, Necrotic Sliver, and Pulmonic Sliver, as well as some of the really expensive sliver cards like Sliver Legion, Sliver Queen, Sliver Hivelord, and Sliver Hive.
Maybe it would include essential cards like Kindred Summons, Patriarch's Bidding, Coat of Arms, Door of Destinies, Herald's Horn, Heartstone, and Training Grounds.
Perhaps such a toolkit would include some lands that are of high value to a 5-colour manabase, intended to be a starting point for new sliver players. Cards like Chromatic Lantern, Path of Ancestry, Unclaimed Territory, Ancient Ziggurat, and City of Brass.
God damn those cards are absolutely nuts! What a shame we haven’t seen anything like this again
I think that they need to do this again with a larger print run. The "set" has some extremely powerful cards that need reprinting. One more thing. Give all of the cards in it(and please include a sol ring) a special border that is unique to the box. Now if they did this for modern some cards to put in would be the soon to rotate hazzoret and grislebrand
Spellbook: Commander?
@@stephenlong9806 yes and how about a draft set that is able to build a 60 deck with a commander in mind

Hey prof!!
I enjoyed this video a lot because it featured a product I missed out on. And it truly looks impressive it’s a sad thing too because I would go find one right now if I could.and as to another supplemental product like this I would enjoy another arsenal focused on commander lands to help fix some of the mana bases of the new commander 2018 or even older commander pre cons. I feel a tool box of dual lands or unique lands would sell really well.i know I would snag one!
I REALLY want Commander Masters. Just a regular Masters set, but only including allnof the ridiculously overpriced, only playable in commander cards.
Let me just name a few: Oracle of Mul Daya, Bloom Tender, Phyrexian Altar, Mikaeus the Unhollowed, Greater Auramancy, Reanimate, Demonci Tutor, Cabal Coffers and so many more. All those cards had very little to no reprints EVER and are way to expensive, especially for their original rarity. Reprint commons like Shadowborn Apostle or Viscera Seer and forbthe love of god, Snow-Cowered Basics. A product like this would also be a great place for some expensive Pauper staples, like Gush, Pyro- and Hydroblast, Chainer's Edict or Oubliette.
Edit: And there are at least 3 land cycles I am aware of that were never completed (Battlebond Duals, Odyssee Filter Lands, Cycle Dual Lands)
Gauntlet of Power, Extraplanar Lens, Original Kozilek, Rhystic Study, Sensei's Divining Top, Vedalken Orrery, Leyline of Anticipation, Mana Vault, Mana Crypt, Fyndhorn Elves, Remand, the Swords (Fire and Ice, Feast and Famine, Light and Shadow), Stoneforge Mystic, Noble Hierarch, Sterling Grove.
The Maxx and Sam Kieth are my favorite comic and artist. Great video and great taste.
this would be amazing A Commander toolkit with all the format staples and some much needed reprints
I think it would be interesting to do a commander themed, all colorless “arsenal” of about 15 staple cards and with two or three legendary creatures, so EDH players can fit the cards into all their decks
Superb Video as always!
If this product was at a higher pringing i would've probably gotten into commander much sooner. This looks amazing, also more of this product would be amazing!
If they did a modern arsenal, and it was actually good in a way that it could propel newer players into modern, then I wouldn't care whether if the cards had alternate art or were foil. I'd flip my lid in excitement just for massive amounts of reprints! (WotC if there's a chance you read Prof's comments make a product that has playsets of all the fetches and give it a print run higher than Khans of Tarkir)
I didn't even know this existed! I think similar products would be great. Foils, alternative art, cards we want, and I think this would be an exceptional Hot Buy item.
So like Commander Anthologies, just that the value cards are just in and WotC can save itself the effort to print the ~ 80 bulk cards of each deck, which mostly end up in an LGS owner's boxes....less cost, higher sales due to a presumably lower price and a happy community....yet I would like this product to be LGS only and maybe even pre-order only tied to the DCI-card so that mass-buyers can't keep them off shelves and inflate the prices (as an added bonus they would get something amazing too...reliable data directly from the customer).
It's be awesome to see a wider range of products available. I think the deck builder kit is a great example of a good product (for beginners in this instance). Will we see a commander builder kit ? More arsenals ? It is very hard to start or to come back to MTG, because not all products are adapted to non-beginners. And in this, local game stores are essential as it seems WotC mostly targets newer players. What if I don't likz the commander deck but would like a run at scoring a thran dynamo and a sol ring ? Couldn't we get commander oriented boosters and the likes ?
I really wish they made more of these when they came out. Nice cards in there
03:37 'stock their stuffings with' so close Prof, so close :D
I was lucky enough to get one of these (of the 2 available at my local game store) at msrp. I still run almost every one of these cards and use the life counter for every game
Wow, the escapist. Haven't heard about them in ages, shame since they had a ton of fun content back then. Still love that very first Friday Nights episode, thanks for the reminder. :)
Man, I sure hope they print something like this again soon. Would be pretty great with some reprints
They won't. They would shiver at the idea of putting more than $50 worth of cards in a $75 product, so don't ever expect any good reprints at a cheap cost. Shareholders take most decisions in that company nowadays.
Not my idea, but a friend's. Figured I'd share it anyhow.
The Commander's Toolkit: A box containing a collection of semirandom commanders, as well as a semirandom collection of other format staples. So for new players, it's an excellent opportunity to build their collection and build into the format, whereas for already-enfranchised players it's a reasonable chance to get some of the more expensive cards.
Examples I thought of: Guarantees to include such things as Kodama's Reach, Cultivate, Swords to Plowshares, Counterspell, Hero's Downfall... but chances (and not minimal chances, mind) to contain things like Teferi's Protection.
What I'd like to see is a brewer's toolkit, full of interesting build-around-me cards. There are tons of cards like these, but finding them (on gatherer etc) is pretty hard. Gimme a Zur, a Wild Pair, a Sunbird's Invocation, a Fist of Suns, an Inspiring Statuary... I just want to brew, and new toys are fun.
Hey, Professor, I just bought the Commander Anthology vol. II and I wanted to ask if you think it is better to just open it and play it with friends, or save it to resell later? I already have a fun commander deck, but I had to buy anthology for Breed Lethality. I'm tempted to play it, but looking at how much last year's anthology shot up in price, I'm also considering just saving it to resell. What would you recommend?
Didn't even know this existed, I wish they would do another one!
Did you finally crack it open... I've been waiting for this for a long time. Thx!
“Horrid! Absolutely horrid!” 😂Great video prof. Keep going!
Arsonal needs to come back. As an izzet player, I need foils of cards that don't have foiling yet. A niv-mizzet "mind over matter" would be amazing!
I started playing in 2009-2011 (my play group all moved away), and I picked it back up in 2016. I never even heard of the arsenal before and as an exclusive commander player now I would be excited for something like this if it had a reasonable price tag.
I would love this. I honestly think that they should visit this again, just a commander build kit. Toss some of the other staples in there too, like Sol Ring and non-basic lands, instead of the sleeves and oversized cards.
I don't need $150 worth of Legendaries, just like $80 worth of cards that will go into any deck of the right color. And of course printing enough. I mean, it's a multiplayer format; if only one person in your group has access to it, then dang, everyone's jealous.
Nothing to truly add, good product need to be done again but in higher cuantity. Nice job prof. Keep it up
Y’know what sucks about LGS exclusive product? It makes MSRP just that: a suggestion. Even now, whenever a new product launches, all the LGSs in my area will without fail, increase the price by a fairly significant amount. Yes, big box retail sucks, but at least a product you buy there will definitely cost the MSRP, and perhaps even force LGSs to keep their prices that way too.
From the vault lands, would be easy to make great, and would help every single format except MAYBE standard. A shock or two, a fetch or two, dark depths, maze of ith maybe, maybe a legendary land from urza block or two, one or two of the shadowmoor filters so many possibilities. Cool command tower foil, forbidden Orchard, nyxthos. So many options
I was looking for a review on this after I saw it in the background of another video. Only ones I found were of people not playing commander. So thank you for this video. Shame I wasn't as interested and rich enough at the time.
Wow, it's amazing how good this is compared to most of what we get.
I think my ideal product would be modern masters. And while the next thing I would do would shake people, I think it would be the single best decision possible for the game. I'd print fetchlands in it at uncommon, and do a large print run. I think fetchlands at uncommon would be the single biggest way to reduce barriers to eternal formats, and would probably still end up at a ten dollar or so price point (path to exile still costs more than 5 bucks despite reprints at uncommon). With pack value pretty high, I'd then focus on printing draft strategies that see modern play and are in wedges. Humans, burn, grixis shadow, jeskai control, etc.
Then, because the fetchlands reducing the overall value of the other rares, I'd go for cards like Noble Hierarch and Snapcaster mage for the mythic and rare payoffs. To me expensive cards aren't really a problem, but low cmc auto includes being expensive cards are. It keeps new players out. Fetchlands enemy number one, then probably Snapcaster, then Noble hierarch. I think hitting those three on price in a major way would be enough to open modern up to a lot more people.
We need more of these
I know it maybe wishful thinking, bit I hope someday in the coming years WOTC will give cards to people based on what we want to play with.
So all basic lands...
@@TheMightyBattleSquid nah. WOTC will find some way to jack the price up, make them terrible quality, make them hard to get. Leta go with squirrel tribal commander, or a new format Called Crow of Storms where we can only play 1/2s, maybe they will make some good cards for that ironically...
I discovered this product in 2020, and hope new commander green "spellbook" come with great cards like this one. Is a pity we don't have more commander arsenals...
I loved it wish they made more of the neg/plus tokens. I would love it if they made an Arsenal "Modern, Pauper, and Brawl"
I remember seeing five of these at Walmart back when it released. I didn't even play MTG at the time, but I still regret not picking it up.
I would love to see a return of the Commander arsenal. I specify Commander because including other formats means you need 2-4 of each card included.
I like the idea of a deck-type arsenal. Like a burn arsenal, full of the best burn spells, or maybe a control arsenal, filled with the best control cards. Not any 1 particular format in mind, just like some good cards that people can play with in any format. Like for example, I play a lot of commander, but I also play a lot of modern. So cards that could be good in both formats would be really useful for me. Idk how well the idea would work but it's still an idea
Damn, these sets never even made it here to South Africa. I would LOVE to see this type of product again for Commander.
Great product. Scored half of one as a door prize. Kaalia become my first commander. Become my favourite format and been playing since
do these foils warp or come warped if stayed in their sealed product packaging for a long time?
Dude! arsenals look so damn cool. I would Love to have a little pack of staples to buy directly from my lgs instead of having to procure them on the secondary market.
hey prof i always wondered why you sleeve cards from the top down? is it better then bottom up/
He probably double sleeves them, smaller inner sleeves from the top down and regular sleeves from bottom to seal in the cards from both sides. Keeps the valuable stuff well protected.
No one else going to acknowledge he said "Stock their stuffings"? Suppose I shall. xD
You are the first. For you, the doorway opens....
And here the Prof preaches truth once again, more format focus!
I think it would be great if they brought Commander's Arsenal back and released it alongside the yearly commander products in place of the now excluded fifth deck. It would be a nice supplement of expensive commander staples that could be on theme or have great synergy with the yearly theme of each deck. I wouldn't even mind if the MSRP is more than the commander decks themselves. I guess you could almost think of it as a day 1 DLC? But it could be an efficient way of reprinting expensive staples.
A "Legacy Arsenal" with Dual Lands or a "Vintage Arsenal" with the Power 9 would be a license to print money, plus a breath of fresh life for those eternal formats. A guy can dream, at least!
The music in this videos is so great
Looks like an fantastic product, I would definitely have bought one if it was accessible. It's is like he said "a treasure trove".
"Stock their stuffings".... Lol.
Did the cards start warping as soon as they were opened? ;-)
That is a very good question. Maybe he will leave the dragon lair spider out on his desk and see if it curls up.
RankUpProductions i have alot of the commander arsenal cards. They aren't like FTV. Cards. They're more like regular foils.
LOL Just like a real spider, the Dragon Lair Spider curls up. My regular foils still curl, even some of my normal cards curl...
good joke hahahaha
2012 used the good foiling...they didnt curl.
Prof reading Imzadi at the start! One of these few not horrible Star Trek books
To keep in line with the "From the Vault" series they could make a "From the Vault - Commander" instead of a second Commanders Arsenal.
Nothing like seeing a pack fresh foil going into a KMC perfect fit
that damn spider would be good with the big spider from the new commander precon, windgrace deck
I had to win mine in a Legacy tournament. Ran amazing and refused to split in the finals because I wanted it complete unopened. And, ya know, I did it. Still sits on my shelf today as my trophy for being good at playing Canadian Threshold for one day. :D
God, it hurts seeing how absolutely great some of the older Wizards products were....I only got back into Magic around the end of the Return to Ravnica block, and I feel like I just barely missed out on some really excellent products and sets.
Spot on professor!
As a new commander player in need of good cards, this is a must-have. i dont need them in foil just in general
I didn't even know that this was a product! Thats pretty messed up that they had such a short printing commanders arsenal. Man I would sure like to get my hands on one of these today, minus the spider of coarse.
Id love to see this or a sequel product, new art is nice but if they can keep the cost down with simple reprints im cool with that.
I like your lore videos and wish that you would do them again.
I remember the gaming store I go to received two copies. They held a raffle to see who got to buy them, and give the LGS their due, they sold them for MSRP despite knowing that over 100 people had entered the raffle for them and could have likely charged double for them and got it.
They need to revisit this idea.
I think something like an ‘archetype arsenal’ would be cool!
As a player returning to the game after a while I would love some tipe of Lands arsenal. Its very difficult and very expensive to find playsets of rare lands (Shoks, Fetches, etc). Even the filter-lands are somewhat hard to get (in Brazil). A Commander Landbase Arsenal would be beautiful, of couse, if it is available...
Just picked one up last night
Oh man, arsenal for Modern, Legacy, and Commander 2 would be insane. A boy could dream.
Looks like a cool product, they could not bother with the oversized cards nowadays, but aside from that, their card selection was very good, and the other goodies seem to have actual value instead of just "it also comes with a cardboard box".
