Many Magic The Gathering players ask the Question, is it worth it to buy a Commander Anthology?
Commander Anthology is another installment in what has become a new line for Wizards of the Coast: The Anthology series, where former pre constructed and supplemental products are reprinted in a box set to allow those who may have missed buying these products the first time a second chance at acquiring them.
But is this Commander Anthology the superb selection Duel Deck anthology was, or, like the planechase anthology, is it too much money for an odd hodgepodge of cards? Let’s take a look!
Before we begin: a little context. When the first preconstructed Commander decks were made, the format was still gaining popularity in the mainstream. Wizards release of five supplemental Commander decks was, if anything, the company testing the waters to see if this judge favorite format had widespread appeal.
As such, the decks of 1,2,3,4,5 were something Wizards had never done before: taking a fan made format, changing the name for legal purposes, and endorsing and encouraging its play not only by selling premade decks for it, but by designing unique, just for commander cards.
Little did Wizards of the Coast know, but Commander would soon thereafter transform into one of the games most popular formats, a super money maker for the corporate wizards, and possibly one of the best decisions of product creation Wizards of the Coast has ever made.
The popularity was so big, that the decks sold out fast, due no doubt in part to the fact that many of the exclusive cards were wanted for gameplay in legacy formats, and although all future commander products received a very high print run, the original five commander decks became incredibly hard to come by, their exclusive commanders and cards at outrageously high prices, and, except for the lucky few for grabbed the decks early when they were initially on the shelves, something that only those with the most disposable of incomes had access to on the secondary market.
The parallels here to Duel Deck Anthology are big: the first four duel decks received similar small printings, were very expensive and hard to find on the secondary market, and taking and collecting them in an anthology that sold for essentially what the cost to buy them off the shelf would be was an excellent idea for players.
Doing the same here, with all five of those first gen commander decks, in an anthology that simply costs what buying them at MSRP would have been, a stroke of genius. (pause) Unfortunately Wizards of the coast only included one of the first gen commander decks and opted instead to include a selection of one deck from each of the first four years. - Hry
New video idea: "is it worth it to buy Magic products?"
Many new magic the gathering players wonder, "why the fuck is this shit so expensive?"
Max Gray Also why are there so many products getting dumped into the market each year. With the high price and high volume something will have to give. It's either the price drops to move the volume or less sales at a high price. The average player doesn't have 1,000 a year budget.
Yep. Your best bet is just buy singles if you want to play a format. Even then your spending around 50-100$. Not including sleeves and other misc product. That is bare bones at best. Being a family man my self with two young boys just getting into MTG. I buy a box for draft.(it last us about 90 days) Then we use what we can for kitchen magic. I do have a modern deck I play FNM with. Still that took me 3 years to get everything. Damn fetch lands.
TL:DR MtG is expensive regardless. Just know what you want to play before buying product.
I wouldn't mind it if these products consists more of needed reprints since that would make magic cheaper but yes with all these new products coming out month after month, the excitement of seeing new product come out has died out. But in music, movies, games, or other entertainment nowadays it seems it's boom, go for few weeks then move on to the next thing.
Shatamx I recommend you make a cube. It is probably the cheapest way to play magic since it is almost infinitely repayable and is easily modified.
Couldn't agree with you more. I just made a vintage cube and love it! videos on the channel if anyone wants to check it out.
Winner has been picked for the contest! Congrats to Chris Broadfoot! More contests on the way, so stay tuned and stay subscribed for your next chance to win!
Prof's at it again with the mad loots!!
Tolarian Community College I'm so glad he's doing this coming from someone who is a kid in high school soon to be collage in a year it's really hard to afford playing magic but I enjoy it so much and don't wanna give it up so giveaways from my favorite magic CZcamsrs are always nice BTW if anyone has some good budget tips for magic or anything good for lowering cost but still being usable reply pls I'd love to hear it
Pick me pick me!!! I have a very tiny collection, since I have only gotten back into the game a couple weeks ago after a 13 year break! (yes, I know it's probably going to be a random pick) My son and I are having some great bonding time with this game and it's really given me a zest for life I thought I'd lost. Winning the Anthology would give me the serious cards I need to get my son and I a firm standing among the players at our local comic shop.
Prof, my entry wont go through, what should i do
Tolarian Community College Keep up the good content, and good luck to fellow contestants!
Literally everybody I've ever spoken to thinks commander is optimal with 4 players total.
Erik Cobra yeah never heard anyono who thougt it was optimal with 5, in fact i know peopple who wont play in a pod with more than 4
avery hola god yes 5 players is just too long I like interaction but there has to be a limit on how much answers there are in a game
Erik Cobra i like 4-5 equally. But I roll with a lot.
I agree. 5 players FFA becomes an absolute chaotic experience. The one in the lead can never stay there too long with 4 players against him.
We sometimes play in star pattern (your 2 opponents are the guys in front of you), but it's not as fun as a good ol' 4 players FFA.
I sometimes even prefer 3 players games, where 2 vs 1 makes more sense when you're ahead.
Same, no one ever wants to play with 5 or more as it makes games go unforgivably long. 4 is the standard as it allows for the best time to games played ratio.
They really should just ask him to review products before they finalize them. I don't buy if Prof isn't enthusiastic.
Same
Logan Hurley cuz ur a sheep pleb
BuriedFlame, Snow Bert Logan is using a 3rd-party review to inform his purchases. That's being a smart consumer. I'm not entirely sure what point either of you planned to make by insulting him for using a product review in its intended way.
Agreed 👍 Prof hasn't been wrong on the items I've bought so far.
Snow Bert
Huh?
these videos are always useful I was considering buying this and still might but being able to know all the value in the collection without having to do massive research is extremely nice!! good job prof
I always appreciate how much research you put into these videos. Amazing, thank you!
They missed out the chance for a Commander Reloaded where they keep commanders the same but change up the deck lists to reflect newer cards.
hire this man!
This would be cool as fuck
they didn't miss the chance though
They could easily still do this.
hire, give him a raise, and could someone give the man some fellatio?
"Commander is thought of as optimally a 5-player format"
While I totally agree that this should have been all 5 of the original Commander decks, I've literally never heard anyone say this. This is a 4-player format. Games with 5 players just drag on too long.
And the MSRP is kind of insulting.
4 player games sometimes last too long lol
I wouldn't call commander ideally a 5 person format. As someone who plays EDH exclusively and avidly, games are most fun on average when there are 4 players. 5 players is ok, but 3 and 6 person pods actively make the game less fun. 3 is due to political dynamics, and 6 is due to length and lack of communication.
Keep it up! Looking forward for more videos from you, don't stop!
Pro tip : you can watch movies on Flixzone. I've been using it for watching a lot of movies these days.
@Jaxx Gus Yea, have been watching on Flixzone for months myself :D
@Jaxx Gus Definitely, I've been using Flixzone for years myself :)
I'm new to mtg and I'm looking to find the right format of either standard, modern, or commander so I appreciate all the different break downs you guys do. I feel like I'm getting to know more by watching these videos. Thanks!
I see that cheeky archenemy box there, can't wait for the overview
Hey professor i just wanted to give you a big thanks for all the work you put into your videos as well as the giveaways that have been happening recently. I find that these giveaways have demonstrated a closer connection with your viewers and show great generosity on your part. Without a doubt you have my continued support and best wishes in your future venture.
Nai Nameloc plenty of giveaways here as well!
Thank you for the price breakdown! This is what I wanted to see :)
Great review. I totally agree the WotC whiffed bad by doing one from each year's release, and only doing four decks. (I feel similarly about 2017, but that's another topic.). Thanks for the great content!
Excellent summary. Professor, you are the master of discussing the game and its products.
just recently subbed, and really enjoy the informative nature of these videos. thanks so much!
I love this I don't have any of these decks so that is a bonus for me. I left everything original and use this all the time for teaching new people how to play magic and introducing friends to commander!
Thnx for this man, first time that i see a video of you and it really help me out to desided if i buy this or not, i think like for a person like me that, is active playing modern and standar, but not playing comander this is a good oportunity to start, plus even if those deck there are already out, is a perfect start for someone like me!!! Thnx
Keep up the great work professor. Some good insight on this new product should really help those deciding to purchase it.
Dude. Love the hair. Looks great. Thanks for your take on CA. Keep them coming brother!
Awesome breakdown! Thank you for the video!
Good review. I did buy a Plunder the Graves, and am using a heavily modified version as my main deck. I've been debating on buying this for the other decks, and the life counters look awesome. I'll have to see if my LGS has any of not, still on the fence but your review helped a lot. And yea.. the first 5 decks would have been so much better.
Thank you for doing this Professor. I was getting worried you weren't going to make this.
Nice to see WotC finally came to their senses and started including the Commander's Arsenal dial life counter in other products. It's a very cool little trinket.
Great analysis in this video. From one Professor to another! ;)
Thanks for the heads up professor!
rewatching this and seeing the prices and how they changed make me glad i bought this back in the day at release and having not played them but only look at the decks and notice I built my own version of some of these with some changes.
Bell Squad reporting for duty!!
Can't wait to get my hands on this..... SOON!!
I don't have any of the decks, and can't wait for my pre-order to arrive! Trying to introduce some friends to EDH, so we're going to have a newbie friendly night in the next week or so!
Thank you for the input. I don't have any of these decks built and have been considering purchasing this product(should have been more on the ball). Honestly the first part of this message I wrote was: What brand is that marvelous tie. I would really like to add it to my own collection.
Thanks for this! One small critique - I'll happily sit through pre or post roll ads, but the mid-roll ones are so disruptive!
Hey Prof, just dropped by to say that you are absolutely on point with your assessment of Commander Anthology. I'm an avid EDH player who started in 2013; long after all the original 2011 decks have been sold out. I own all the Commander decks released in the years 2013 until 2016, with the exception of 2015 where I only bought Plunder The Graves. So for me, the only points that would sway me to buying the Commander Anthology are really the Heavenly Inferno deck and also foil commanders: as of now, this means that I am saying NO to Commander Anthology.
I'm a new player (coming up on one year) and commander is my main squeeze! my play group LOOOVES commander and we play it almost exclusively. Gets a bit pricey sometimes but super fun card interactions when you can't have doubles in a deck
Thanks for the Info!
Thank you for the opportunity to win the Anthology Professor! Definitely love the content, keep it coming!!
been waiting for this
As someone who has just started playing commander and only has one of the 2016 pre constructed decks, this is perfect for me!
Awaiting thoughts on the new anthology! :)
pretty cool product.maybe not for the price but ive been wanting to get into commander for a while and my friends are wanting me to play magic more so it be awesome if i ended up winning the set. congrads to who ever wins the giveaway
another great video thanks professor
Great video, thanks!
Watching your videos makes me wanna get back into magic. Definitely subscribing, your skits are pretty fucking funny too. Thinking about playing commander, all those sexy undead ;-;
Thanks for the raffle opportunity Prof! been dying to get my hands on Freyalise and Kaalia :)
I can spot Bolas grinning from the shelf =)
I had to give up my entire magic collection when I moved for money. Once I get the money, if I don't win the give away, I want to get the product so I can get back into my absolute favorite format. Love the content, as usual, keep it up please!
I am mostly fine with them choosing one from each year EXCEPT for evasive manuveurs, considering mind seize and power hungry have much better value with each of them having a 10+ card (True-Name Nemesis and Primal Vigor). That being said, I too would have preferred a reprint of all the original commander decks, considering how much building damia, skullbriar, and animar appeals to me
Great video!
Professor! They did this because of the rich history through out magic commander precon products! Not to mention that merin is a very popular deck and the c14 green deck has some good reprints in them.
You should have pointed out dureting the review, those who are coming back or newcomers. I just came back to MTG and after countless hours of searching i came to a decision that this would be a great purchase, because i simply loved Commander! All i needed was a fun casual format to play with friends and on LGS to slowly learn the new implemented mechanics and adjust myself to the game again. In this case, i think it's totally worth the MSRP, but if you can get it lower than it's definitely an amazing deal.
I have never played MTG, you got me into it.
Classic Wizards. One step forward, two steps back.
I'm so happy you gave this a B+ I accidently bought this instead of Planeschase anthology and feel like an idiot, it's good to know I didn't get completely screwed and now I have four new commander decks.
Dang dude. You looking all suave and sophisticated in this video bro
Man i remember the day the first commander decks where spoiled, around that time a judge hook me on the idea of EDH and i was "ok im going to make a prototipe to see what works and what doesnt". Then when the spoiler was released and i saw Ghave. I used to have a Fungus deck and boy watching a legendary fungus gave me the push to buy it. To this day that Ghave is still been my main Commander deck and it keeps getting better.
I agree with Prof, five is better than four for Commander. You can make alterations on the format better, e.g. star, secret partners; you can have themed deck nights based on the color wheel and with the exception of the upcoming 2017 Commander decks, you can crack open the commander decks and play all of them right out of the box with five. When they release products/commanders based on the color wheel they tend to be in fives and Commander Vs or Game Knights have the detriment that they generally have to leave one out since four fits better on screen. Five is the number that represents Magic: The Gathering. I also expect a Commander game to take multiple hours and have dips and rises and shifting alliances, so five is the best number to achieve that. 6-8 players tends to be too much, but I also find those games memorable.
I'm looking forward to get this box, and play it like a boardgame with some friends that don't own commander decks. I'm from germany, the Commander Anthology costs about 90€ here. A new precon commander deck is about 35€, so if I would get four it would cost me 140€. That value alone makes it a great product in my eyes.
I agree... I was able to buy these decks when they came out... all but the WBR deck... but I traded n sold a lot since then...
100% agree on that this should have just been a collection of the 2011 Commander precons.
If that was the case, I'd have made sure that I had money set aside for a pre-order even if it was a bit pricey.
The Anthology as it is only contains one deck I don't already own (Kaalia's), and they managed to pick the *one* 2014 deck I own. As it is, I'd only consider picking this product up in a couple of months (if still available) if I feel like I can afford giving a couple of decks away as gifts.
Kaalia was the first commander deck I bought in MTGO like 5 years ago, time flies.
Great video as always. But, since when is commander thought of as optimally a 5 player format? 4 player all the way.
Bought it for $115 from my LGS! A steal! And its great for new players like me who actually just got into magic and only have the 2016 decks :--)
first for lightning bolt reprint
Preorder-Price of my favorite shop for singles and precons was 115 bucks, so I think I'm fine :)
just subscribed trying my bad luck it's ok if I don't win I'll just have to save up to get it. thanks for reading this
hey prof. ive been a magic player for about six months and ur vids have helped me alot along the way. im now a heavy commander player and and soon to be investing in modern. currently bettering myself at standard. keep up the good work.
ps any advice for a future teacher?
this video was very helpful
I'd like to see a How to play Netrunner since you like it a lot or other Netrunner products because I'm interested in playing the game.
Absolutely agree that this should have contained a reprint of the first five precons. It's really a shame that it doesn't since I started buying the precons with 2013 and consequently have three of the four decks in here.
Agree with most - I would add that if like myself, Kalia is one of the decks that you want but didn't want to drop that money on only one deck, it still might be an "A" or "B". As of today I can buy just the one deck for the same price that I can get 4. Even if I have the others which I do having the extra staples or good cards is worth it over just one deck for the same price.
I'm excited for this release. It is pricey, but looking forward, I think these decks are only going to get more expensive.
I'm new to commander, so this product looks great! Might be a while till I get ine though. Do they sell ths life counters individually, as in out side the set?
Top video prof 👍
man your hair has some serious majesty. i would bow to it
great job and the only reason why I getting this is for game night play
I have all the *Commander* decks except the first set, the fact this only contains *Heavenly Inferno* was a gut punch, I love the format and not having those power house cards available is sad times.
It's funny. I don't pay attention at all to Commander deck price trends and had no idea that the Kaalia deck I picked up from the original run was so expensive.
Those deck boxes are awesome. Is there much room left when you put in a double sleeved commander deck? My decks have quite a few sleeved tokens as well.
One question, prof... The deck boxes look like the same heavy cardboard they used for the decks in planechase anthology. Will they hold the deck if you sleeve the cards, either single of double sleeved? Thanks for all of your great videos!
Being an Anthology, having a Decks from a variety of years was the correct choice. A box-set with the original Decks would be a cool set called Commander: Icons (?).
Commander: Origins
I really appreciate your reviews Prof. I just have a question: Would it be worth it if I already have the "Evasive Maneuvers" Deck ang get the Anthology for about 100€?
I was super excited about Commander Anthologies, and was totally prepared to shell out the cash for it... until I realized the temur generals weren't going to be reprinted. :/
At least they put in a good commander deck from the first also I like that they spread it out
Hi, have a good day
unless you have exams coming up, then go study
I cant people keep paying the one for my rhystic study
It's ok ! I already failed them !
Red Leader lol not gonna happen (studying that is)
Red Leader haha! I did mine on the first day of exam season. Now I have the rest of the exam period + mid trimester holidays to lounge around in. Wahahaha
Hey professor big fan of your videos trying to get into mtg could u make a rules guide video please
Man I remember a few years ago when the 2014 commander decks were available for £20 or less. Should've bought in then.
i love those counters,... to my atraxa deck....
6:08 Looking at Titania being a $6 card gives me chills. She's 17.99 currently!
Hey Prof, do you think that all commander Pre-cons should come with one of those life spinner dials?
This set is perfectly fine. While I would have liked the original decks only, there is tons of value overall. I got mine for $155. Add the value of the life counters, which won't be as sought after as the commanders arsenal, is still fantastic. I suppose the next anthology will be the 3 Premium Decks Series....
Based on your latest Top 5 Commander Pre-Con Set, only Plunder The Grave made its way to this product. I wish WotC watched that video first before decided on what Set they should include in the anthology =D
It needed to be all the original decks, not just one of them along with decks still available in shops today. I said that when this was first spoiled and I think you're right professor, it was an awful choice not to do so.
What's that thing in the middle of the box, between the four life counters?
Also, do the deck boxes include hold the decks in sleeved form?
Kinda wish it was the original set of commanders too. Don't really care too much for these decks, but if I get see a couple of single cards drop in price, the better I suppose. Guess my LGS will be have another Anthology plastering the back of their wall.
I had none of the decks and am just getting into commander. More importantly I now have four commander decks that I can teach my non magic friends how to play! One of my friends is already excited for the elf deck. Should be a blast
I was actually so upset that Animar wasn't in here.
Still gonna buy it though, only ever purchased the Freyalise precon.
We totally need a similar video for new Archenemy. Professor, we would be Fblthp without your wise guidance!
wow it's worth it I've seen them up close in person I wish I had the money to get them
yeah ive already bought the other 3 edh decks. i just want the heavenly inferno deck and then hopefully buy the other foils separately.
The Plane Chase Anthology was an awesome price since trying to get all the PC cards would cost over double the Anthology.
