    For the cost of a Deck Builder's Toolkit, you can check out great decklists for Friday Night Magic gameplay like this $20 G/B deck from SBMTG: czcams.com/video/zgRGZbrgJpk/video.html

    Hey, prof!
    Odds are you won't read this through the 162 comments before it but hey, it's worth a shot.
    I'm a huge fan of the toolkit. It helps me figure out some new deck options for standard, sometimes (more on that in a sec). Therefore, I have learned a good number of things about it:
    The deck builder's toolkit is a little more complex than I think you give it credit for. The 4 non-booster packs each serve a purpose. The one with the rares in it is the guaranteed pack (semi-randomized has a semi in it for a reason). The abrade, cast out, doomfall, etc. are guaranteed. Those are cards that every deck builder's toolkit has in it.
    The evolving wilds pack is something else, however. It is my personal favorite part. Between each of the evolving wilds is a set of 10 cards (5 uncommons and 5 commons) that act as a basis for a deck. In Ixalan, specifically, the 4 are seperated into 1 vamprie deck, 1 merfolk deck, 1 of 2 dinosaur decks (Either RW or RG), and 1 of 2 pirate decks (Either UB or BR). There is also a chance of getting an off-tribe deck, which is UG ramp.
    The rest of the packs are just lands.
    That, in my opinion, is the great part of the deck builder's toolkit, to new and old players. It shows people how the new set translates into standard! What cards go into what decks and what decks are viable, etc.
    My friend just entered Magic the week before prerelease and he got a toolkit last weekend. With a little help from us and the cards from the toolkit and his prerelease pack, he made a really good RW All-in Dinosaur aggro deck for the budget he has.
    I think the toolkit's imperfect decks are a good thing: they teach players what aspects of a deck are important and what to improve upon. Nobody learns from a perfect deck nearly as well as they do from a bad one.
    So, to answer your question at 8:08, yes. You're not gonna make a perfect deck out of a toolkit, but nobody can learn what a feast is without first knowing what famine is. (Eh, get it?)

      Agreed!
      I got an Amonkhet Toolkit about a month ago, and each of the 4 boosters were from a different set so I had no cards with mechanics that worked well together. Only after I played at the Ixalan launch sealed tournament did I have enough cards from a single set to properly get started.

    • @EVO1148
      @EVO1148 Před 7 lety +3

      Yeah I've always been of the opinion that they should be released with the second set of a block and give you 2 boosters from each. Cos at the moment the 100 fixed cards you get with the pack end up being a mix of the most mediocre commons/uncommons from 3-4 disjointed sets. Whereas if they just waited to the second set you'd at least have mediocre cards that synergise properly and if you've got 4 boosters from the same block you're 2/3 of the way to a pre-release pack anyway. This is especially the case for a tribal set like Ixalan given that tribal synergies from it don't really work with Amonkhet/Kaladesh whereas a load of mediocre tribal cards together can at least do something

  • @kulrigalestout
    @kulrigalestout Před 7 lety

    Since you mentioned them, I wanted to say that I got a set of the Rookie decks a little while back and had some games with my brother and a friend with them. It was scary going in because I had the most recent experience with one entire hour of Duels playtime under my belt, my brother was astounded that the card backs are the same as they were in Ice Age, and my friend had never even heard of MTG before. We taught her the flow of the turn with the aid of the inserts, taught her about the different kinds spells from memory, and had a jolly good time of things!
    I had yet to watch the video you made on how to go about teaching friends to play Magic, but I think my brother and I would have done ya proud. We advised her on better times and targets for Unsummon, how to assign damage in such a way as to maximize her creatures' effectiveness, and even ended up letting her win. Not because we had the means to stop her but chose not to, but because we all took care to split damage between the three of us so nobody was getting ganged up on and she ended up with too many flyers to deal with.
    Of the lot, Red was the most inconsistent. Blue and Green featured 4 of each card it included, Black and White had mostly 4 with a couple of 3s and 2s, but Red was entirely 3s and 2s and none of the 4s were particularly powerful relative to the other decks. I know each deck is made with what they have on hand and they can't guarantee a deck with specific contents, but I was hoping each would be equally consistent.
    As a teaching tool and as a kitchen table funsies product, they were great! Certainly better than buying an equivalent cost in packs and hoping to stumble into something decent, thanks to each deck having a theme it was built around. The cases are greatly appreciated since we have a lot of board and card games to keep track of, and hard plastic defends against our cat's attempts at murder much better than thin cardboard. I do think a third insert explaining the card types would be a fantastic addition, but our little group didn't happen to need it.

    I also think that getting only a few cards, not a playset, that are the good tools are helpful for a new player due to exposure. First, it shows some options which helps if you may not have friends who play Magic or something. Next, if they know they can put multiple of those cards in a deck (I remember when I just started, I probably would have assumed it was more similar to commander, where you can only have one of each) it helps give a little push to seek out singles. Not all new players might go along with it, but the community helpful, giving pointers to new players. It's a way to learn what I've learned, that it's difficult to go anywhere in this game alone (outside of playing, of course), so make some friends and the level of fun will rocket up exponentially. It provides help and a lot of opportunity for casual games to learn from.

    One of my local stores runs a DBTK event once a month. You come in, buy a Tool Kit, get 45 minutes to make a deck from said Tool Kit and play a single elimination tournament. The winner gets a few prizes that make it worth it, in my opinion. Even 2nd and 3rd place get some stuff, if more than 12 people enter the event. My wife and I participate regularly and it's always good fun. I would highly recommend going if your local store does this.

    *NOTE* ... imo some things were missing from this review ! ...
    1. The stack of cards that have the evolving wilds in them are NOT random, this is a stack with (what i would call:) a suggested start for a deck. SO this toolbox holds 4 different 'semi-pre-constructed starter decks', and you would use the cards from the actual pile of semi random cards (with the rares) and the 4 boosters, to add to these suggestions (here we saw: "merfolk, pirates, vampires & dinos").
    2. Then when it comes to starting off with magic, when more then often you end up with budget decks, the toolbox holds some budget duals and the evolving wilds (if you check Dev's budget lists these are almost always in there, though noted will be that replacing the tapped dual with non-budget lands will be the likely first place for upgrades). And there are plenty a competitive decks that see a use for Evolving Wilds !
    3. Would also like to mention that, as a starting player you will likely want to go to pre-releases, and having your own (pre-sleeved) basic lands to take to this event is something i personally value pretty high. And lets face it, every deck will have some basic lands.
    4. Imo. the toolbox seems to be designed to point new players towards the various synergies that are to be achieved when building a deck, which is likely also why the aforementioned 'deck-suggestions' are in the kit.
    5. I think that if you were to combine the cards from a deck-builders toolkit, and actually understood the packaged lesson within it, and were to attend your first draft (using the (pre-sleeved) basic lands to save yourself some deckbuilding time). You could end up with a solid base for a fairly nice budget deck (yes you would likely still need to buy some singles, but at least you have a base collection to add cards to).
    End-closing, and this was in this video, i still think that for a beginning (or returning player that sold his/her collection) the toolkit is packed with value (mainly the lands and evolving wilds), seeing that as a 'budget player' (don't think i classify as starting anymore) i find myself grabbing these elements of these toolboxes every time i build a deck.

  • @EVO1148
    @EVO1148 Před 7 lety

    It should be noted re. The semi random aspect that the first pack of cards that prof opened after the "iconic rares" are not random. These will be identical in every toolkit (so you are guaranteed to get that abrade, uncharted territories etc.) The semi-random aspect relates to the cards between the evolving wilds. These are divided into ~8 themed groups of which you will get a random 4 of those possible 8 groups. The cards in each group are fixed so if someone else's toolkit happened to have the treasure, vampires, dinosaurs and merfolk groups those would be the exact same cards that prof got. The only truly random aspect is what comes in the boosters

Casually getting back into magic now, I still use the box it all came in.

    I think that you missed something worth mentioning. Only 40 of the cards are semi-randomized, so if you wanted to, you could in theory build play sets of cards by buying 2 or 4 of them. Many of the uncommons included are worth over $1 as well such as blossoming defense and gifted aetherborn, one of each which is guaranteed in the toolkit. The pack containing the evolving wilds contain 4 10 card blocks outlining a strategy to build a deck around such as bw vampire tokens in one of the sets you got and +1/+1 counters BG Merfolk in another.
    As of this post, some of the guaranteed included uncommons prices per TCGplayer:Gifted Aetherborn: $2.68Blossoming Defense: $1.32Cast Out: $1.16Chart a Course: $0.55Supreme Will: $0.93Walk the Plank: $0.81Abrade: $1.58Unclaimed Territory: $1.96Just including the guaranteed uncommons over $0.50 we add $10.99 in value

    11:24 That's exactly me, after 10 years i'm a returing player although i haven't bought a single card just yet. I was totally lost because there are no more theme decks. Back then, me and my friends used to buy them to sorf of stablish a THEME to go on, and slowly strenghten it by trading or buying singles or booster packs. It was a blast and pretty straight forward.

    @Valefolken Před 7 lety +56

    I love your videos, but your bias towards FNM is more than a little prevalent. You need to consider that not everyone's goal is to play FNM. Suggesting a new player to buy the singles they need for a constructed deck is an awful way to experience magic for the first time. They will not learn about deck building, just copying. They will not learn keywords, they will not learn how to discern the value and potency of a card just by looking at it, they will not get any chance to EXPLORE cards. In essence, players are being robbed of everything to do with MTG except playing competitive matches which, in my opinion, has been one of my least favourite experiences with MTG.
    You underestimate people's enjoyment of cracking packs, exploring new cards, figuring out for themselves what makes a strong card, enjoying art or flavour text. Most of my MTG fun comes from going through a bunch of cards I've never seen before, and thinking to myself about how I can make use of this card, what I can combo it with. Without looking online or anywhere else for a deck list, I constructed my own Black/White Allies deck back in the Zendikar/SOInnistrad era. Turns out, this was already a competitive FNM deck, and I had just come up with it all on my own. I later looked up a list and found a couple of helpful additions to my deck, but nevertheless, I was able to compete with pride with what I - and nobody else - had created. And it was all possible with the Shadows over Innistrad Deckbuilder's Toolkit. Of course, I had to buy the singles to fill out full playsets instead of having just one or two Kalastria Healers and Zulaport Cutthroats for example, but the foundation was created by EXPLORING. I learned how to discern good cards, I saw the value in the synergy of Ally cards, and I bounced with excitement watching all these lifegain effects ricochet all over the place.
    Not only that, but I don't believe a brand new player should jump into FNM right away. So if we are talking about a BRAND new MTG player, a Deckbuilder's Toolkit should be an A+. It may not build you a competitive deck on its own, but it will build you a foundation for one if you feel so inclined to compete. What holds a DBTK back in your eyes is lack of competitive play, which brand new players most often aren't interested in right away, therefore, there's nothing holding this back from getting a better rating.
    I hope you take this into consideration for future videos, as you appear to be of the mindset that Friday Night Magic is the end all be all of every single MTG fan new and old. I promise you, it is not.
    Love your MTG videos professor, and your non-MTG videos. You're a great person to listen to and a fantastic human being. My favourite videos I think are the ones where you talk about how great the MTG community is, and about parenting with MTG.

    5. 2nd player chooses a second color - last color is put to the side
    6. Each players gets 2x evolving wilds and the dual color land of the two colors (s)he chooses.
    7. Build a 40card deck from the cards you have.
    ~8. Add boosterpacks to your collection of cards to have more interesting options for deckbuilding.

They bedome so much more consistent just by including 4 evolving wilds and so cheap! I Genuinely think cheap fetches like those are the best thing wotc ever made for us casuals.

    It's worth pointing out that the only "semi-randomized" pack is the one with the Evolving Wilds in front of it. Every other pack, including the one with the Abrade, Lightning Strike, Walk the Plank, etc. is fixed in every box.
    (And I'm not sure that the "semi-randomized" pack isn't fixed in the Ixalan box either, since I'm not sure what else you'd get instead of 10x Merfolk, 10x Pirate, 10x Vampire, and 10x Dinosaur cards. In other sets, there'd be a bunch of little themes like 'W/U flyers', 'R/U spells', 'R/G aggro', and so on, and you'd get four of those out of a possible pool of 11 or so. That doesn't seem to fit the themes of Ixalan, though.)

    Here's my take
    Any new player just getting into magic
    The tool kid is by far best bang for your buck as a starter cause
    Most starters are gonna be doing casual to get the hang don't need in-depth decks to go head it head with tournament decks.
    Now my first deck was a pre-structured battle deck (kiora vs goblins)
    I took merfolk and my friend took goblins. (Three years ago)
    And over the years we tweaked a bit and with ixalan coming out, we took our tweaked decks and actually came in third and fourth place (he had a goblin burn deck that relied on impact tremors and mass goblin tokens while attacking directly with instants.)
    My merfolk was very good with Nimbus swimmer getting 40/40 at one time (got lucky with that one time play) and really gave a guy a run for his money.
    So structured pre made decks or tool kits are great for new players (buy two or three boosters or have a friend who has a bunch of spare cards and are willing to help you re build.)

    $20 product
    $16 for 4 packs
    $4 for 100 basic lands, 125 cards from recent sets, a deckbuilder's guide, and a non-flimsy card storage box.
    Alright, so that being said, I think this product is absolutely worth it just monetarily. Now, into usability:
    the four packs: for building your collection and playing with cards, packs are a very fun product on their own in my opinion. However, each pack is from a different set, so there will be a lot of 1 or 2 ofs. Not that big of a deal to me. Packs are always great in my opinion. There's always a chance you'll get a $60 mythic out of a toolkit and be able to get three toolkits for essentially free.
    card storage box: honestly, I love these boxes that WotC makes for bundles and toolkits. I've owned a lot and they have a lot more space than what is needed for the product and fits sleeved cards. Absolutely a win and a reason to buy this product.
    125 recent cards and 100 basic lands: pretty good inclusion here as well. If you don't have a giant collection already, lands are very much needed and the 125 other cards are great for building fun decks to play with friends. Again, totally worth it.
    Guide: for people that know how to play and make decks of their own, it's completely useless. However, if you're a new player, this is fantastic.
    Overall, an A+ in my books. One of my favorite products WotC makes. I love bundles/fat packs, booster packs/boxes, and preconstructed decks too, but this would be the product I'd recommend to a new player. Absolutely worth it.

    I mostly draft for FNM at my local gamestore, where the prizes are a pack per match one. Even as an experienced player, I buy a tool kit here and there for the full art lands. I've never felt cheating by the cheap rares cause I save them for Halloween treats, sleeving them and dropping them into my pumpkin for kids. I've actually scored quite a few good or better rares within these kits. Buying singles and draft is better value of course, but I never feel money wasted when I purchase one of these. 😀

Honestly they are the best deal for the money and the decks are actually decent and fun to play. While you won't have the best deck money can by, You will defanently have a fighting chance. With magic decks, diminishing marginal returns quickly plateau following the ratio of money spent to power level

    I have bought 3 deck builder's toolkits and they really are best for new players. When I was getting into magic and bought one for me and one for my husband and we each built a deck out of ours and had a lot of fun then much later I was in walmart and they had the ones from theros block marked down to $15 because the new ones had come out and they still had 2 of them left. I probably should have bought both of them since that was less than the cost of the boosters and hard to pass up.
    I kind of wish that wizards made a product like this but geared to pauper and made it just commons. 3-4 copies of pauper staples perhaps still semi random. a chance to reprint some of these staples that are way too high just because they were printed in only one set and wizards doesn't want to reprint them into standard. land pack and I'm thinking you don't even throw in any boosters though it feels like blasphemy to say that. MSRP should be as low as possible on something like this 10-15 tops. Magic feels like it has such a finical wall to entry to it it makes it harder for someone to start playing a constructed product like this might help.
