Sylvia was trying to marry off fran for years and worked hard to find a husband for her. She even thought the bank robber when they were were in the bank would be a good match for Fran because he didn't have a ring on his finger and would be soon in possession of millions. Sylvia has been working super hard and her scream of agony when Fran gave back the ring was a scream deep from the very pit of her soul. Niles has been spying on Fran his whole career and has been trying to eavesdrop on Fran and her personal life by pretending to vacuum by her room. He has been trying to get Fran and maxwell to confess their love to each other for years.. He has invested his blood sweat and tears trying to spy on Fran and when Fran gave back the ring his whole soul was crushed to the core. When she gave back the ring I thought Niles would have a heart attack or stroke. It's like she invalidated everything Niles was invested in!!!

Maxwell is the epitome of hypocrisy … he pushes her back all these years, taking back his “I love you” and at the same time expecting fran to wait around like a dog.
And that’s especially gross when you know that at the same time as Fran and Nigel almost ran off, he had something with an old friend. Like .. what is it Maxwell?! You can’t eat your cake and have it too, it doesn’t work that way.
One THOUSAND percent. Maxwell is no Prince Charming. On top of doing what he can to sabotage her relationships and stringing her along for 5 years (and her being happy to accept scraps from him), even after they were married, he BARELY respected her. He always yelled at her and blamed her for actions he took. These are things all played for laughs because it's a comedy, but I'd be livid to see someone I know go through this.

@@AnnelisR agree with you 100%. I’m rewatching the nanny and I can’t believe all the things he took her though. He barely respected her. I remember them making fun of Fran because they thought she was stupid. Not only did he sabotage her relationships but he sabotage any opportunity that would possibly take her away. He manipulated her just to string her along more. Honestly if they didn’t have such amazing chemistry, people wouldn’t ship them. Fran really deserve better. She had better guys that she encountered during the series.
Yeah but honestly that's what made this show good they were all flawed, humane and hypocrites. There aren't many characters like that nowadays.
After wanting him to propose and than returning the ring you can tell she was hurt. Never seen this one it is so good she is such a strong woman

On a serious note, where's Fran's mistake here. Maxwell took it back and if anything Fran eventually did not go with Nigel even though she wanted to bcos she liked Maxwell more and also for the kids. Maxwell should be apologizing. Good move giving the ring back.
Not exactly. Fran would've went with Nigel. She left a good bye note on Maxwell's desk, packed her things, and left to meet up with Nigel at the pier. But she missed the boat by a few minutes, so she went back home.
Maxwell is being hypocritical. But it's gotta be weird for him to find out from someone else that she intended to run away with his brother. Fran's mistake is that she didn't tell him.

@@whitedragoness23 I watched the show when it originally aired on tv. We were all on the edge of our seats thinking this is it, she's really leaving and the show is gonna end. So it stuck with me. It was only a mishap that kept her from sailing away with Nigel and she was obviously dejected as she watched the boat sail away. If I were in Maxwell's position, and someone told me my fiancee intended to marry my sister a year and a half ago, I'd be hurt and livid. Even if I didn't know my fiancee at the time, that's an awful thing to experience. It should've come from Fran, even then it would be hard to swallow, but at least it would be out in the open.
@@Mybpeterson if you look at a majority of the comments many are against max Sheffield. Most calling chiding him for “overacting”. Even it’s a bit hard for me to understand and they seem like a good match.
I meant the truth sounded worse coming from someone else than if it had come from Fran. She was probably too scared to admit it because she didn’t want Max to break up with her.

Granted, they've got a complicated history "I love you, I take it back." But they're engaged now, their past doesn't negate the genuine hurt she caused him by keeping this a secret, whatever the reason. Saying it's payback is immature and unfair. Then there's people who misunderstand the situation like aperson2020. Even then, it's no excuse. She absolutely should've told him. Giving the ring back, like it was his fault for being upset, just added insult to injury. He rightfully needed a little time to get over it.
Fran was a wonderful example of loving and valuing yourself enough not to settle for less than full commitment!

@@annaheart7731 it’s a joke about how Fran refuses to accept her age. She’s obviously older then 29 but that’s the age she keeps claiming to be. So her mom and Niles are basically saying “you’ve had her for the first part of her life” “and you’ve had her for everything after that”

Yes. I was waiting for this episode. Fran is always beautiful. Even Maxwell is the perfect match for her, he was acting childish. I understand him feeling surprised about what could have happened a year and a half ago, but not betrayed. Fran didn't cheat on him.

I think i love this because of how utterly human it is. Hurting, Fran did make a rather spontaneous decision that she later had to pay for… but Maxwell’s own flaws and indecision was part of the reason behind that. He knew how seriously she wanted to settle down, and how very afraid she was of just… being let down. Being alone. Being on hold.
No one’s really in the right, and no one’s really in the wrong either. They both made decisions that fucked up their futures, and they both had to pay for those decisions.
Just very human all around.
I don't think Fran was in the wrong this time. Maxwell did this to himself. If he had just committed to his feelings for Fran in the beginning then this might not have happened.

How can Maxwell expect Fidelity from Fran when they weren't even together when that happened? Yeah they were flirting and had crushes but they weren't a couple.
*Maxwell being upset is understandable but he overreacted. He took back saying he loved her. He was playing with Fran's emotions for years, going back and forth. She could only take so much. Then Nigel treated her as his first priority and she fell for the idea of being treated well, not Nigel. She was just tired of waiting for Maxwell. No one talks about how some parts leading up to their relationship were toxic. The majority of it wasn't and I love them overall but that emotional pingpong can really take a toll on a person. I'm glad they eventually end up together and work everything out but the almost 5 years it took them to get there... The writers were really tryna stretch it out as long as possible* 🤣

Well, they dragged it out because they (the show's creators Fran and Peter) didn't actially want them to end up together. But the network forced their hand if they wanted to stay on air.

Max is such a hypocrite, the took his love words back and expected her to stick there forever without him making a commitment. not being with him but also not being with anyone else, making her unhappy. and now playing the victim. i never liked that about him. even though Fran could be too much and too desparate for marrige, this wasn't a gentleman-like behaviour either
I know. Even Nigel knew when it came out. Appreciated it when Fran brought it up and you could tell she was tired of the back and forth by giving Max the ring back right away. She was done waiting.
I never really liked maxwell.
I would think it had to do more with Fran being with his brother. He was always jealous of other men with Fran but honestly Fran did it to make him jealous. Yet, I don't know if it's some random guy it's not as bad but being left for a sibling stings. Eh but Max always apologizes when he is wrong and the two work on their problems. Fran even calls him out on his behavior here when he ran around with another lady.
However, Max needed therapy too not just Gracie. My guess his fear of commitment was if he got married he would lose Fran the same way he lost Sarah and break his and his children's hearts.
@@PrincessAries86 That plot device about being with Marla Maples just doesn’t make any sense at all. It’s the only thing in the Nanny that they got completely wrong. It was made worse when he said to Niles, in the night before the wedding clip, that he hadn’t been with anyone else in five years.

Si infatti Max avrebbe potuto perderla per sempre, ma se lo sarebbe pure meritato, c ha messo un infinità a decidersi, con Niles che ogni 3x2 gli diceva - se non si muove prima o poi la perderà. Non l aspetterà in eterno - Fran in quel momento si era sentita apprezzata da Nigel. Anche se poi si dimostrerà un dongiovanni. Diciamo che Max si é reso conto che avrebbe davvero potuto perderla per la sua fobia d impegnarsi. Anche se poi salta fuori che per poco non finiva a letto con Marla Maple. Infatti accusa il colpo e si scusa con Fran che alla fine gli fa capire che erano destinati a stare insieme. Lei incontrava tutti uomini sbagliati, trova quello meno peggio, ma se fosse davvero voluta andar via con Nigel sarebbe partita prima, una semplice mezz'ora e avrebbe fatto in tempo. Invece si é fermata un eternità a pensare a salutare ogni singola parte della casa pur di non uscire. E lo stesso Max comunque penso di sia limitato a qualche flirt e sbaciucchiata, non mi pare il tipo di portarsi a letto gente a caso.

Everyone here is on Maxwell's case. But I can certainly understand him feeling a bit betrayed. I know Fran loved him. But sometimes it seemed like she was willing to marry almost anyone, just for the sake of being married. Maxwell only said "I'm not ready to forgive you yet." Key word here is "Yet". He needed time to work through Fran's deception. And yes, she did indeed beguile him. Fran should have told Maxwell about the Nigel situation well before this...
Why is it a deception? Fran was free to date anyone after Maxwell took the confession back. Also, she doesn't have to disclose if she had any romantic partners before the relationship, they (including Nigel) were in the past hence she never cheated Maxwell. She's completely innocent.
I concede she could have waited, but she had waited him enough and she had enough reasons to think this was just another ploy of Max to take back everything, after the multiple times he did it before.
He said he loved her, took it back and played with her feelings for years, they were not dating when fran and his brother had something so she didn't do anything wrong, he was a huge hypocrite, he didn't want her to be with him and he didn't want her to be with someone else either

She actually didn't made out with him, and she was free to date anyone after Maxwell took the confession back (multiple times). She never cheated anyone.
