I love it.

felt like almost a fallout video here but instead of vaults, its mars..
or No Man's Sky :)~
Your Own Senpai ikr
So you want to be an astronaut and make the first crewed mission to Mars? Here's what you can expect, health-wise.
This video is dedicated to astronaut Scott Kelly, who returns March 1st from his year-long mission aboard the space station. Thanks to Scott, and countless NASA scientists and engineers over the past 50 years, we've learned an incredible amount about what it will take to send a crew to Mars. There's lots of problems still to solve, but that's never stopped us before! Let's make it happen.
+aadin anayodan the idea of the worldwideweb was of Tim Berners-Lee iirc. Internet was initially a small local network called Arpanet made by DARPA
+It's Okay To Be Smart
Yes, I want to go to Mars (because that is the only option, right now. Venus would do as good [even surface]. Neptune or other solar systems would be even better) because SJWs and Femenazies (&flat earthers) made me.
At least your HAIRstyle is gud
+It's Okay To Be Smart The links to the sources don't seem to be working for me?
rather than have a spacecraft made of solid lead, which is obviously impractical, why not just have a chamber made of lead for spacepeople to sleep in? then it would at least half the exposure to radiation right?
6:30
Joe: It can be pretty psychologically challenging.
Me: Really??? I have seen this a dozen times in movies and stuff.
good riddance
Scott has travelled about 139 Million miles. That's 1.5 times the distance to the Sun from here!
+oilynut9 they mentioned it in trailer on PBS. I just compared that number to the distance to the sun
+Shutter Authority Each one of us travel ~2Ï times the distance to the Sun from here every year!
Amnon Sadeh That's true. You could say any number actually, because our solar system in drifting in our galaxy and also the galaxy itself is drifting. But the distance I said was with respect to the earth.
Shutter Authority --- He has enough frequent flyer miles to fly free first class for 100 years.
@Pugazhan Sathyamurthy Life is decent, although it needs some bug fixes like: deja vu, random boners, *depression* and ofcourse hiccups. other than that it is a good game, 6/10 would recomend.
i sense a fallout vibe in this video
you mean a 50s vibe

What do I feel looking at the last shots?
It's magnificent. The beauty of Earth, the passing stars in the vastness of space, the glow of the atmosphere in the sunlight.
The strings and webs of lights in the night! Like a testament to human ingenuity. Awe-inspiring. Just looking at these shots make me feel like I'm in balance, between the burning, fiery curiosity of humanity and the silent, beautiful universe, floating weightlessly in space and time. It's such a peaceful and positive, heartwarming feeling!
This informative video sounds like an Vault-Tec one.
this video is awesome doc
love how he politely giggles every time explaining serius dangers. real 60th vibe
This is eerily similar to Aperture Science's Enrichment videos.
why does this remind me of some kind of vault-tec sales speech
i love the format of ur videos where u treat us like we're from the future... so awesome and unique.
I saw Scott Kelly and Mikhail Korniyenko's launch into space live from one of the science classrooms at my High School. It was cool to watch.
The radiation for a Mars mission is vastly overstated as a risk. In reality an astronaut on a Mars mission will have their chance of getting cancer during their lifetime increased by about 2%.
+spacecadet35 Relative or absolute risk?
Relative.
+spacecadet35 So they are just passing time to be perfectionist about everything?
kdnator
I am not sure what your point is, but the usual reason for raising the radiation risk is either ignorance or propoganda.
Not really. Which figures are you taking for reference? Because the ISS is within the Earth's protective magnetic shield, so it cannot be compared to a year and a half traveling through empty space to Mars (plus staying there X time and another year-plus-long return voyage). Out there nothing at all protects you from solar and extrasolar radiation and, if you get caught in a solar storm, you're pretty much dead or almost so. Apollo missions to the Moon were very lucky of not having such an extra radiation dose but they could have been very harmfully or even deadly affected by such an event; in the several years that a trip forth and back to Mars would take, you'd certainly had to face one or several such radiation emergencies: it's a fact of life in space (and on Mars itself, which is almost unprotected from solar radiation).
Sure, I'll join Vault-Tec.
I was thinking that too!
This channel is really getting into it's stride. Good stuff.
Very nice production value!
I'm so ready to go despite the dangers....take me to Spaceđ

Mars? I want to be able to go to the bathroom and still be in the living room.
Honestly your best video. I loved the style and animations.
Halfway through the video and I'm so inspired already!
6:38 as long as theres no big red button that said "dont push", I m sure everythings okay.
And kudos to all of our test sub...I mean courageous astronauts who physically brave the frontier of human's knowledge.

You can still explore hidden archaeological treasures and the Marianas trench (nobody has been so deep in many decades).
Sajua, I feel the same way.
Please. The most interesting thing is exploring other cultures, and it's the perfect time for that. Just make sure you are well armed and trained if you are going to explore some of the more developing countries.
Awesome video as always. Keep up the amazing work :D
Great video, as always!

I really liked this video. it really has that fallout trailer feel to it, and the video in general was informative and fun. nice job sir
Nice approach to explaining it
this video has a very Aperture Science/Fallout type vibe.
this made me think of fallout, loved it!
i love what you are doing and the way you do it. absolutely fantastic
thank you for giving a realistic point of view as to why going on long space missions is generations away. There are too many channels on CZcams talking about this like it is going to happen tomorrow.

Anyone else think that their animations looked fallout inspired???
+Elijah Schwindt same i was getting some fallout vibes
Straight Out Of Fallout
+Elijah Schwindt I was going to mention the same, and the background reminds me of a Vault type setup. Even the music.
+Elijah Schwindt The background even kinda looks like the inside of a vault!
or, y'know. fallout is 50's inspired, like this video.
Your vidoes are so good!
The last part, specially with that music, really made me want to go there even more ;)

For the radiation thing, could we invent tech that mimics Earth's magnetosphere? If Earth's magnetic field can protect us, we could try an artificial magnetosphere. We'd need an amazing power source, but I believe it can be done.
Yes, it's called magnets.
SS-Captain Lurmey Yes, knew that much, I just have no clue what arrangement would mimic Earth's magnetosphere in an efficient manner, because as much as astrophysics interests me, I'm a biology major in college at the moment, so...
Nor do I, but I'd assume an extremely strong electromagnet in the center of the vessel would work, but that would also repel (or attract) any magnetic materials aboard the vessel too. Can't be having that, can we? We're better off trying to invent new, more powerful and more efficient forms of propulsion and constructing spacecraft in orbit from stronger, more radiation-resistant and ultimately heavier materials.
Good point. In terms of getting into orbit, we could, perhaps, invent better air-breathing jet engines, which would hopefully allow planes that could reach orbit with minimal rocket propellant.
SSTO crafts could be an option, a space elevator would be ideal. If I had billions of dollars, I would just fund several rocket launches with materials to construct an interplanetary vessel in HEO (high Earth orbit).
i'm so glad you made this
This was excellently done
Why is this so similar to aperture science introductions?
+gunboy001 because it IS one.
As an Apperture Science introduction, it would be like
GLaDoS: Dear test subject! Welcome to the Mars Voyage Experiment. During your travels, you might experience discomfort and severe pain, leading to your eventual death. Please proceed to your spacecraft. Thank you for your contribution to science.
Can we send Donald Trump to Mars?
lol
+Greg Wiens Yeah, but then we would need to build a wall around it.
Can we send Donald Trump to the sun? đ
Do you mean can you subvert the will of the American people and choose to have your political opponents exiled or killed ? Luckily we're not there yet
Tony Rx It was a joke.
(Just like Trump running for president is a joke.)
Love your videos! I was wondering if you could do one about what would happen if air were suddenly as dense as water, or if water became the density of air.
Im currently in the midst of writing a University term paper on the Overview Effect, very interesting stuff!
I "shielded" myself with poop. Am I ready to go to Mars?
"ah"
Uhh... probably?
Hopefully this won't change peoples mind about to go to mars
Why? If it's dangerous than they should not be sent
+TheAsianPlaysGames The first people that sailed across the sea and ocean knew it was dangerous but
did it anyway. The same goes for the first people that went to space and the moon.
+I Wumboed well said if mankind never did anything that was just a little dangerous we wouldn't have got to where we are now
great episode!
SOOOO EXCITED FOR #YEARINSPACE
I think we should work on building deep sear colonies first. Plenty of geothermal, potential for different kinds of food, like fish and kelp. I reckon if we can live under the sea, we can live anywhere.
Oh yeah, and you'd never run out of water lol
Centipede why not both?
There is plenty of geothermal energy on Mars, it is just deeper than it is on earth so you would probably have to go at least 10 miles deep compared to just a few yards deep on earth to get the same amount of geothermal energy.
Beware of evil vault-tec salesman!
Omg. Seriously thought that #nofilter part was HYSTERICAL! Hahahhah. That was awesome. Alright. Keep up the good work
I love these videos!!
next episode, why are you so cute ?

Did anyone else notice the rhymes in the first sentence? I think he could be a great rapper. Quit this nonsense, Joe. Better try an rapper career!
lol
Wouldn't Mars magnetic field protect us from radiation just as well as earths magnetic field? ._.
+wolfscratch Mars no longer has a protective magnetosphere like Earth does, unfortunately
+It's Okay To Be Smart I apologize ahead of time if this is a stupid question, as I am not familiar with this kind of stuff (radiation and magnetic fields) but would it be possible to create an artificial magnetic field? If so, could it be mobile during space travel?
+Lionfish45 It sounds possible to me, but I think it would require too much energy to be used on a spaceship.
+Lionfish45 you probably could, but the energydrain would be insane and it would produce more then enoth wasteheat to turn your craft into a furnace in a matter of hours, so you would probably need a couple solar panels the size of manhattan to manage all that energy and wasteheat.
you are probably better off with special protective gear and a heavily shielded spacecraft that is built in orbit to bypass that pesky launch you would undoubtly fail due to extreme weight.
if mars had a magnetic field ._.
not only i got smarter, but i was entertained too! loved the quality...great job man really impressed

Was that "The Right Stuff" a reference to a movie of the same name, if it was, it just reminded me that I have to watch it.
The Year In Space series has been available on TIME magazine's youtube channel for a while now, but it's not finished yet. I think they'll post a few more episodes.
+DJPelio The hour-long special will be different from the videos posted on TIME magazine's channel, so plenty more to watch!
I love your videos
