    I agree that from a purely commercial perspective giving the US along with Japan the 2 invitational places makes a lot of sense with RWC2031 in the US. Could be a huge change for the game if a big US sponsor saw the potential of Rugby in the US.

    • @mollyoko
      @mollyoko Před rokem

      I just don't see the US bringing much to Rugby in the near term,. It comes down to money. You would need the same sort of money being spent in NFL (billions) to even capture an audience. The competition of the NFL and other American sports just won't allow rugby (a foreign sport) to take their viewers. eg. MRL is a division 2 pro league currently played in the NFL/NBA off season...(but is a step in the right direction). The reason why Women's Soccer in the US is successful is because they don't play NFL...Until there is a school/college program and the allure of highly paid professionalism at the end of it its always going to be 2nd tier and full of late developers that don't make it in the big American sports, (mainly NFL). Rugby is not cultural in the US , like Soccer (men's) and despite all the money thrown around in Men's Soccer they are still a 2nd tier nation with little viewership. Rugby in the US will only happen with a Billionaire tv tycoon bending it imo. I do wonder why Rugby has to be more commercial or needs 'more' viewers than it already has. The fact English & Australian clubs cannot fill their grounds but Ireland and French club teams have full stadiums speaks to the management and greed of those unions/pro league owners.

    • @Sabundy
      @Sabundy Před rokem +1

      Giving it to the US is a massive slap in the face to numerous countries. The US still has little rugby culture to speak of, has not in any , way, shape or form earned that place as their rugby remains sub par at best. Their world cup record is a joke, they have never beaten a tier 1 nation in a competitive (WC or tournament) game, and even failed to beat Chile ......a country with significantly fewer players and significantly less resources.....and could not qualify for the WC despite their region being a weak one. If World Rugby gives the US that place it is insulting and ridiculous. It's world rugby literally chasing money over and above anything else. Certainly not based on merit or achievement. Why on earth should the US be given such special privaleges? Never mind that it is even more ridiculous because the US team would get consistently hammered given their 100% non tier 1 ability.
      Also, I would argue that World Rugby is chasing windmills. The US is a big sports market obviously. And a very lucrative one. But it is also a highly saturated market where a contact sport is already entirely ingrained in the culture, pays far better, and is popular with them. The idea that rugby is going to somehow compete and become a popular sport in the US is a big gamble. Both because the Americans like to win and dominate. And they are very very far away from being able to do any such thing. And they just generally like their own stuff. Good grief man.....even the worlds most popular sport Soccer has struggled to gain popularity in the US after almost 30 years of a pro league (and that is without any similar sport existing in the US). It still sits well below the popularity of all American sports, and they have little to show for 30 years of professionalism and billions of Dollars poured into it. Has the US achieved any great results in Soccer? They have improved certainly....but certainly are not a tier 1 country nor in any danger of challenging for the WC. So we don't have any compelling reasons to believe that rugby is going to succeed where Soccer has not exactly done so. Especially having to compete against an already deeply ingrained contact sport.
      And that is without even getting into the problem that World Rugby is also ignoring and slighting numerous other countries who are far further along in their development (such as Georgia) or where there is far greater potential to grow the game such as India and China where no contact sport of any type is established and the markets are still new to pro sports.

    SA having to play NH club rugby and SH internationals was the whole reasoning behind them wanting to join the 6 nations. The springboks haven't had a break since the lions series in 2021!
    And by the way the travel will affect SA in 6 nations way more than anyone else... It would be one game in SA and all the rest in Europe. This channel's attitude is so privileged. Look what just happened to the West Indies cricket team - SA doesn't have an economy to compete with 1st world tier one nations. Are you that selfish that you would push them off the ledge instead of reaching out a helping hand?

      You are right, SA does not have an economy to compete with 1st tier nations but still won 3 world cups. How many worlds cups did those 1st world nations won?

      @@peter636 they just wouldn't. Ireland have beaten New Zealand 4 times in over a 100 years, never got past a rwc 1/4 final. Leinster didn't win anything and you think they'd beat the 7 tine champs? You're delusional.

    Unfair disadvantage? South Africa knew full well what they were getting in for playing teams on the other side of the planet. It's hardly unfair
