Why It's So Easy To Love Vietnam 🇻🇳 SAIGON First Impressions

- SAIGON, VIETNAM - Welcome to Ho Chi Minh City aka Saigon! It's my first time in Vietnam and I venture out for a walk to find some street food and get some first impressions. I was surprised by how busy this place was and I felt massively out of my comfort zone for the first time in a long while. I step out on the hunt for some Vietnamese street food in Saigon District 2. I ended up meeting some local girls who offer me to try their street snack Bánh Tráng Trộn before wandering the energetic streets some more on the hunt for my dinner. I eat bun ca which is a delicious fish noodle soup, which was shockingly good for a little street vendor in Thao Dien.

I see some people are worried about the girls who have invited you to eat with them. The girls are just being polite and friendly. In Vietnam, people often invite guests to eat or drink with them, which is very normal. They even invite you into their house for a meal, so don't think they are trying to scam you. What you need to do is start a conversation with them first, say a few sentences in Vietnamese and they will be extremely friendly with you. Trust me, I've been through it and I know what it's like.
And in Vietnam, they no longer worry about Covid. Just enjoy your trip mate.
I wasn't worried at all. My 6th sense as a quick and accurate judgement of people and we had a little chat off camera when they invited me to sit down first. Then when she offered me to taste I turned the camera on. I have no issue sharing food, but obviously that is personal opinion. The beauty of travel is interactions with strangers! No issues here.
I just watched a clip about Russian refugees in Georgia. One Russian man wrote in the comment section that locals invited him for a cup of tea in their house and he was surprised and he still keeps up his guard. He goes on saying that in his Russia nobody does that and he grew up in a society where even a good deed he receives by strangers he has to be aware of.
When it comes to Vietnamese food, there is always attention to care to flavor balance, texture contrast, and freshness (partly because food is so plentiful there, but also because food doesn't last long in a hot & humid tropical environment). Second thing about Vietnamese cuisine, nuoc mam or fish sauce is in almost everything; it is basically a salty, clarified extraction of pure umami, made from fermented fish (mostly anchovies). Once you realize those two things, you'll have a better understanding of Vietnamese cuisine, no matter what dish you look at. (Note: probably won't find fish sauce in beverages or desserts, which tends to favor ingredients like beans, glutinous rice, gelatin, or just fruit).
You are very wise, thank you
@@hungrytoexplore No problem.
Vietnam have the best breads and ice coffee and noodles soup dry noodles , meat balls rice dishes and color sticky rice 😊and many desserts
The food is great! I hope you enjoy the upcoming videos
Bạn đã thưởng thức các món bánh dân gian của nam bộ chưa? Nếu được bạn hãy thử.mình tin chắc rằng bạn sẽ rất thích đấy, một ví dụ cho bạn tham khảo là " bánh chuối". Nice too meet you.❤
I like the fact you mentioned feeling out of place or possibly anxious about vlogging from a new area. Makes ot more real and relatable.
Best of luck for the channel!!
I try to keep it as real as possible, even if that annoys people sometimes. Not everything in travel is sunshine and roses. Glad you enjoyed it.
Ở Việt Nam, hay Sài Gòn nói riêng có rất nhiều món ăn ngon. Chúc bạn có nhiều trải nghiệm thú vị và tìm được một món ăn yêu thích.
Thank you! So far it’s tasting very good haha
Its awesome to get the time to walk around and explore....you're quite fortunate to get the chance to experience Vietnam
yes, I am very lucky and was very happy to be there
I’m British Vietnamese and I find it hard to adapt in Vietnam. This is very encouraging 🙌
Sure, it takes a little time but I think it’s worth the effort - it took a day or two and then I began to love it

Nice work Joe! Havent seen a fish soup before so that was good to see. I see Gary commenting below with the same FOMO lol. You know where all waiting for the 'Gagging Roaming Cook Duck Egg edit'.......I can feel a viral video coming bud!!!! Love your work mate!
Cheers man! The fish soup was really interesting. hahah The duck egg video is in the pipeline don't you worry about that.
@@hungrytoexplore Make sure you kinda dip your toes in it by trying the quail egg version in tamarind sauce first. Then go for the duck egg (trung vit lon), but eat it like Vietnamese folks would eat it.
The fish cake was made from a special fish’s filet. Then they add black pepper, dill, fish sauce and the fry it.
It was super tasty, I didn’t expect it to taste so good
Very nice review. Keep it up
Thank you :)
You should try banh trang nuong and nem trang nuong. Delicious. A lady makes them in the evening on Ngo Thoi Nhiem st, near corner of Ba Huyen Thanh Quan st, D3. Delicious. Also some good bars and restaurants on N T N street. Enjoy
I’ll give it a go, thank you

Nice video!!!
Thanks Rosie, happy you liked it. Hopefully you enjoy the mini series
The fish noodles looks interesting. I went to Ho Chi Minh long time ago but didn't try their real street food. It seems to be something unique there, sitting down on a tiny chair like that. Although charming, I don't think it's good for your back😂. By the way, the new style of your video is also enjoyable.
Sounds like you need a trip back there to fall in love with the food and the country! The small chairs are funny, all part of the experience haha
exactly, all part of it isn't it
@@hungrytoexplore let's see 😂
@@hungrytoexplore ,The seats are tiny because it is suitable for Vietnamese people and the convenience for street food carts.
Wish you have a pleasant experience!

Why does South Vietnamese food always have vegetables? Even the street snacks they still combine with herbs? For example, the dish you are eating "the vegetables in that dish have a warming effect on the stomach to avoid stomach pain", mixed salt is a combination of shrimp, garlic, salt and sour mango...
I love it! The herbs and the vegetables are why I love Vietnamese food so much.
@@hungrytoexplore The platters of fresh herbs and the plethora of dipping sauces that accompany them is what makes Vietnamese food stand out. It's fresh, aromatic, and light. There's usually a texture thing going on as well with soft, crunchy, chewy, etc., and then you combine that with the salty, sweet, sour, umami, etc., that balances it out.
bánh tráng trộn là tôi mê nhất nè
It was tasty
bạn làm video hay , rất thật .

Yeah man, I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would, up there with some of the best!
I saw your food tour in Hanoi...that was one of the best food tours and I tell other youtubers about it (Hanoi food tour is killing it based on your video, MomDuty, "Flora and Note", and Travelholics videos from there). Joe should do a food tour if he makes it to Hanoi.
You should go to all Vietnam like Hanoi, Danang, Hue, Dalat,... north, south and middle Vietnam

I like your dish, will come to try it someday. The vegestable in your bun ca is water celery, not morning glory
Ah okay! I thought it might be tarp stems
The rice paper in "banh trang tron" there seems a little dry, I would prefer the softer version plus many things in there such as boiler quail egg, dried squid, ... but dont forget Bun Bo Hue and many types of snails with many different ways cooking method when you are in Saigon anh oi.
@@wennyhoang3009 Bun Bo Hue will certainly make an appearance on the channel. I ate snails with Max Mcfarlin but we didn't film! Super tasty though.

Should try bún bò Huế next time. It’s next best soup comparing to pho.
Keep your eye out in a future video 🙃
@@hungrytoexplore Most Viets will say bun bo Hue or bun rieu is their favorite. Pho is great, everyday food that you can eat all the time. Bun bo Hue is delicious, but I don't think it's something you can eat every day because it's heavier on the palate.
Thật ra thì bún bò huế nhiều ng nc ngoài k ăn đc vì nặng mùi hơn khi nấu nc dùng bằng "mắn ruốt"
