I am Vietnamese American. The Vietnamese are terrified of being "fat." If you gained 5 pounds, your family would do an "intervention," take away your food, tell you that you're fat all the time until you break down and lose the weight. And then they rejoice and try to feed you.

Their diet is absolutely amazing. Food here in the Philippines is now being more and more Americanized and thus we are seeing an increase in obesity rates in the country as well. Filipinos eat every hour, that's why lots of them are fat. In addition, they're not keen in walking, even if the destination is just 5 minutes 2 blocks away, they'll just haul a tricycle to get there in seconds. Same with Malaysia, they love to eat sugary meals and sugary drinks so they're the most obese in ASEAN

For many reason, the freeze contained or preprocess meat in supermarket is way more expensive than the meat in our local market, which is directly take from farmer from the city outskirt, this also apply to vegetable, so the local food is always be consider to be more fresh and cheaper than one in fast food stall.
Also this explain why the more you travel far away from city, capital, the fresher, the quality of food is increase

I am a Vietnamese and studied in the US. Within the first year I gained 10kg, it was wild. The snack and food were extremely sweet or salty. The portion was huge. My first impression was the portion to be exact. People, especially in the sub urban or rural area, were having a lot, not to say EXTREME LOADS (compared to Vietnamese lifestyle), of processed food. I was even more amazed when I moved to NYC, where "fresh and organic food" - the type of stuffs we eat on a daily basis in Vietnam - was considered a higher lifestyle. While you can get fresh food at the Vietnamese markets for cheap, it goes wild in the US markets (stuffs that are labeled organic)

As an Australian Vietnamese, I only know American food through documentaries and TV shows. What gathered is that American has this "more is better" mentality or what they called the "American way" to do the extreme. So what I see in those burger joint, they would wrap everything in bacon and then triple fry it. This type of dishes get praised. Such thing like a cronut. Croissant get so much butter, to make it better we just fry it or add bacon lol. Cronut was hype in Australia for a short time, and then it dies away bexause it doesn't suit Australia culture.

I'm half vietnamese and half hungarian was born and raised in Hungary. I had a chance to live in Vietnam for a year in my early 20s. What I realized apart from food is that a lot of people do recreational sport. Parks were always full of people in the morning or at late afternoon/early evening doing badminton, dance, yoga, running, street workout etc. From little children to older people aswell. Lot of old people do some kind of exercise and that's amazing. I usually went to do calisthenics and joined a breakdance group (also in a park, very good feeling, very oldschool streetdance style) and every time these parks were full of people.

I think a key difference is the fruits as snacks.
In Vietnam you can basically get fruits all year around due to the tropical location, like in Thailand. So they eat those as sweet snacks.
In Europe (depending on where you are) you have fruits for a bit over half a year, and they usually arent that intense flavoured.
I am central European and I could easily switch all of my sweet snacks with properly ripe tropical fruits (as I do when I go to Vietnam).
But a supermarket mango in Europe? I cant.

Ive been living in Vietnam for the last year and I’ve actually added 20 pounds. Im so used to American portions I usually order two. That lack of discipline and food being ridiculously cheap or other factors. One of the biggest things I think you didn’t mention in this video about Vietnam is how they shame people who are overweight, or even slightly big. In Vietnam people are really mindful of how others think about them, and they are very blunt with telling each other things. Even as an English teacher it’s not uncommon for my students to just come up to me and ask me “teacher why are you so fat?”
And they think there’s nothing wrong with asking that question. I usually just answer “because i love food” im 5”11 230 lbs btw (which back in the states, wouldn’t be considered super fat)It’s even worse for women are expected to be under 100 pounds. I think if you would of found some-obese people. They definitely would want to let you know about their experience there.

@Vanessa well, in Vietnam there aren't any Starbucks really. I think hcmc has at least one but they pretty much pulled out of Vietnam because no one went there. They literally had no customers. One, it's too pricey and two, Vietnam has an amazing coffee culture (theyre a major producer) with thousands of small independent coffee shops everywhere, most of which are very stylish and super distinct. You'll never run out of new coffee shops. So no, chains aren't a thing there at all.

I think the biggest factor is that Americans drive everywhere. Basically drive to work, sit 8hrs, drive to eat, drive home and so on. While Asia and most of Europe walks, bikes and takes public transportation. Fast food is everywhere. I don't think it's as big as a factor as Americans sedentary lifestyle. Fyi. I'm Vietnamese and we probably have the most unhealthy food out there. It's mostly carb based, high sugar and fried. We just do hella cardio and labour daily.

Currently, it’s been 4 months since I started my weight loss journey and it’s going slow because I’m not really exercising... I just got some diet help from Next Level Diet which guided me to reduce my food intake. But if I really want to, I could still eat something without restricting. I already lost 27 pounds and I’m much happier everyday :) Of course, there are times when I fall off but that’s why it’s called a journey. Unfortunately, in the United States, even the fresh food is manipulated, genetically modified, sprayed with pesticides and animals are given all manner of growth enhancers from hormones to antibiotics. In addition, we seem to love processed food. And our portions are huge.

My life changed when I finally set my mind to the thinking that anything is possible if you decide so. I took a meal plan to start with, which I found on Next Level Diet. It was super helpful to me. I didn't have to worry about calories, macros, nutrients and all that stuff. I just focused on walking long distances and exercising after I got on a level where I could do some simple workouts. 2:05 Unrelated, but my brother has stretch marks on his back like that too, and he’s kind of insecure about them. Someone asked him once if they were scars from being whipped. He gained a ton of muscle in high school after being bullied his whole life for being really really skinny. Idk why I felt like sharing this, but I just thought it was interesting to see someone else with the same stretch marks as him.

statistics are slightly lower but very similar in here Australia. Definitely a massive issue for many western countries where unhealthy foods are so readily available and the average person is so inactive. I don't know what the solution is but there is something fundamentally wrong with our lifestyles/philosophies for 1/3 people to be living like this.

Ho chi minh criminal hands were soaked in blood of hundreds of thousands of innocent Vietnamsese people when he received the instructions from Statin and Mao Zedong to wage a cruel massacre campaign so called Reeducation of Bourgeois and Landlord Classes. Ho chi minh cold bloodedly push millions of Vietnameses into the war hell, just to satisfy his egoistic thirst for power. If there were no Ho, Vietnam could have been a much better country today, rather than a heavily indebted country under a severely corrupted repressive totalitarian communist regime. Look at Korean peninsular now, imagine what would have been had the leader of North Korea Kim Il Sung managed to take over South Korea since 1950. And the other way around, what if Vietnam had not fallen under the brutal repressive corrupted communist regime founded by Ho. Or at least, what if, after 1954, Ho the leader of North Vietnam, following the example of his comrades in North Korea, just let the people in the South freely live and prosper the way they choose.

I remember traveling in Georgia (the country) and being surrounded by fresh fruits and veggies. I lived with an orthodox family who often fasted (no meat) for religious reasons but we ate so well...eggplant and walnut sauce was one of my favorites. I remember meeting a girl who studied abroad in America and was like, "I went there and gained 30lbs. When I cane back my family didnt recognize me at first at the airport." It's so wild how unhealthy America is overall, and how it's just the norm to overeat absolute junk.
