The lessons learned from this visit extend far beyond Greenland's icy shores. Understanding the complexities that contribute to the mental health crisis in this town is crucial for creating effective strategies to combat this issue on a global scale. Identifying and addressing the root causes, providing accessible mental health resources, and fostering a sense of unity and belonging are essential steps towards tackling this pervasive issue.

"Just talk about feelings." It sounds so simple but it is actually the root of a lot of male depression. Talking about your feelings isn't weak and it isn't pathetic. It's actually one of the hardest things you can do. It takes balls to be able to open up and speak about how you feel.
If you feel lonely, or if you are feeling like you don't matter, do what Vittus has done and find a way to talk about how you're feeling, you'll be amazed how much you have to share.

6:12 When you offer up your home to a complete stranger, take them on a tour, invite them into your family and have them over to celebrations, only to say in despair: “I want to be a good person.” That line really hit hard. To have that much evidence that your heart is filled with kindness and you have so much to good to offer the world, yet somehow convinced that the world would be better off if you were never born. That’s the real difference between sadness and depression, at least to me anyway.

As someone who grew up on National Parks in remote regions and finally a small town in Australia, I understand that trapped feeling. I think they would heavily benefit from maybe a local movie night, I personally create animations and world building to create worlds that interest me. And it’s okay if I’m not living the life I envision for these shows because it feels like an escape into a reality that takes the adventure straight to me.
I think the isolation helped in my world building because it’s almost like I’m always working off imagination.
I can see countries Cleary with the internet but I can never know what that town or country is like, so I can draw inspiration off the stories I hear from these places and make a world out of it. I never feel like my days are repeating when working on these projects because everyday I’m sitting down and writing the next location, dialogue or draw the next few frames it feels like a completely new day in the world I make.
I think the people in Alaska could use some creativity in their youth and towns, art encapsulates everything we can’t in reality!
I would love to one day start a studio an hire people in places like this to envision their perspective, idc if they have any skills in art or not, it’s the mind that has all the art inside it

    • @pjsmith4369
      @pjsmith4369 Před rokem +14

To me, it sounds more like the isolation in any place you live is the main issue. People all around the world commit suicide. You can be depressed in the loveliest of places.
If you are living in a domestic abuse situation with no where to go, you are also in a prison.
I live in a very cold city in Canada - it’s been 69 years. I suffered from depression, but it had nothing to do with the weather. It runs in my family.
Growing up in winter was brutally cold and life went on - school, work, parties. I was a swimmer and later became better at skating and took up skiing.
Nobody really looked forward to winter, but there it was, every year. Dark leaving for school in the morning and dark returning home. I guess having 8 siblings helped - always something going on. Plus a large extended family.
And when there is daylight, the sun is shining most of the winter. I had a friend who moved from Northern Ontario to Vancouver. It was raining and she kept waiting for it to stop. Not for a month - she was severely depressed. She said maybe it was freezing cold where she came from, but she missed the sun. ( And it’s usually sunny on the very coldest days )
Isolation can happen in large, busy cities. Loneliness is becoming so prevalent, especially with the elderly. I think some people die of loneliness.
That being said, I have 3 siblings who live in warmer climates and never come to visit in the winter. When they came for our Dad being ill and dying - they remembered how much they hated the cold.
One brother always said he would move to a warmer climate when he was able to and he did. And I have one son who also wants to live in a warm climate. He’s partway there in a much warmer city in Canada.

I spent two weeks in Greenland and it was surreal. The scenery is out of this world but what's striking is how tiny we are in such vast landscapes, so sparsely populated. We spent a few days in one of the biggest towns (just a few thousands inhabitants) but quickly you had seen everything. I understand how they can feel trapped, and also the lack of sunlight in winter is challenging for physical and mental health. But oddly, everyone seemed so happy. We had the chance of attending a concert, and they were all dancing and smiling. Everyone was so welcoming, engaged in conversation with us, or just greeted us as we walked the streets.

@@kammmmal211 I'm also heavily introverted. Normally I'm fine being alone. But sometimes, you'll suddenly feel like you need to share something with someone. That you'll want to make some kind of connection. And often that's extremely difficult, if it's possible at all to begin with. I recently got to that point myself and I've been struggling so much ever since, and the few connections I had have been strained by that. Some even broke, leaving me in a worse situation than before.
I spent most of my life actively avoiding those connections, partly by choice, but mostly because of past trauma, being bullied for being different and weird and quiet. Being hurt by friends who abandoned me. Not wanting to get bullied or hurt again. But that's no way to live.
I say this because I genuinely believe it: Find the smallest number of close friends that you can feel comfortable with, friends that you can trust with your life, and talk to about anything, and who'll be there for you when you need them. Friends who are more family than your actual family. Then have a few more beyond that, but not so many that you can't keep up with them all. If you can do that, your happiness will, for the most part, be stable. It takes work on your part, and for me, it's the hardest thing I've ever done. I still haven't been able to. But it's, I think, the most important thing for happiness and stability in said happiness.
Or go the exact opposite route, become a hermit, and live cut off from the rest of the world, but do it completely. Live out in the forest so far from other people that you'll never see another human being again for the rest of your life. Don't go to the store, don't have a phone or computer or electricity, live self-sufficiently off the land. If you don't go insane from the isolation, you'll never need another person again for anything. An exception can be made for a significant other, and maybe future children with them, if you want.
Or, for an extrovert, do the exact opposite. Try to befriend as many willing people as you can. I can't give any advice on this as I personally think it's a bad idea, but someone else might think differently.
And that's the thing. Everyone is different. Your needs and wants are your own. Only you can decide what's best for you. These are just the suggestions of a random girl you don't even know and will probably never talk to again. The choice in the end is yours and yours alone. Regardless of your choice, I hope you live a life full of happiness and that you do so in good health.

@@HiartmanDavoed Well yeah. But there's good in the heart as well. We can't prove them to be secretly holding sinister feelings and thoughts or not. And the action to seek that proof would be sinister. People commit suicide because they believe in something very strongly. I can't speak for others. I know I believe God is keeping me here. But I know there are moments where my faith is tested. For people who do not have strong roots in religion, they do not know what is keeping them here. And when they are tested, they are not protected. We need to protect them until their roots grow deep into the earth. The earth being the joy we can find in our lives, then we can say, "Thank god", because this person can now live. In the moment, whether they are with God or not, if they are alive, then that is good. When we are talking about suicide, we need to recognize the pain in the person's heart. They feel shame. In some cultures, suicide is seen as redemption for shame. It isn't. But it shows that people believe they need to punish themselves. By telling them they have a wicked heart which longs for bad things, what can they learn? Most people already have experienced being told something similar.
I don't expect anyone to protect a stranger or care for them. But the least we can do is empathize and treat them with compassion. Because when a human thinks they are worthless, dishonorable, or wicked in the heart. the person might begin to dissociate and hate themself. I cannot definitely say what is the right way to approach someone who is struggling with thoughts of hurting themself. I can say they're human, and being human comes with complexity. To an outsider's eye, what can they see? What can they know? God knows. God Loves humanity because there are qualities to love and appreciate. Please look into yourself and recognize the feelings that led you to write.
If you can, watch "Errementari". It's a movie about a Blacksmith who made a contract with a demon so he could come back alive from WW1 to his wife. But it went terribly wrong. He chose to do a very bad thing by hurting someone, and unintentionally without thought, he hurt his wife. A person he never wanted to hurt. The blacksmith captured the demon before his soul could be collected, and for a very long time the blacksmith tortured the demon, in retaliation towards his own mistakes. Another character in the movie, is a little girl. Her mother committed suicide from hanging. Other children and adults tell the little girl her mother is in hell, and her mother is of the devil's kin. The way they speak, does not treat the mother as someone worth mourning, but a sinner deserving punishment. The little girl endures, she retaliates. And finds herself wanting to go to hell to be with her mother. She does not understand what hell is. She does not understand what a demon is. She does not understand trickery.
The blacksmiths home is known to the people in town. They can see how the blacksmith has created defensive measures all around his property. A large fence with metal spikes along the top circling around his house and yard. A heavy gate, with signs all over telling people to stay out. What they can't see inside the fenced area, are jaw spring traps set up in various spots. His home was turned into a compound, all to prevent the demon from escaping. But the towns people don't know about the demon. At one point the little girl and a few boys are near the blacksmiths compound. one boy takes the girls doll, a memento from her mother, and tears it apart, throwing the head into the blacksmiths compound.
The doll is important to her. So, she enters the blacksmiths compound through the underground aqueduct, which allows water flow to a watermill that powers the blacksmiths forge. She gets in and finds the doll head while moving past the traps while unaware of them. But then she hears the chilling screams echo from the blacksmiths house. The little girl, from desires and feelings unspoken, decided to wait till the blacksmith went to sleep. Then she snuck inside and took a peek. Inside, she approaches the blacksmiths room, she sees him asleep and silently walks to another part of the house, wondering where the origin of the scream was, she spoke up softly, saying hello and asking if someone is there, the demon heard her and took the form of an innocent. A young boy. The boy calls out to her. The little girl hears him and looks to the direction of the weak voice. It's behind a door chained shut. But there's a small, barred window to look through. Inside the room she sees a young boy sitting in a cage, beside it there are many tools meant for torture. The boy asks her for help. The girl decides to help him. Upon the disguised demon's instruction, the girl retrieves the keys to unlock the door to his cell. Obviously, she frees the boy. Then he drops the act. The demon appears as a horned servant of the devil again. A pronged spear in head, red skin, two horns, a tail, and a pair of feet like that of a goat. Terrified, the girl screams, and the demons snatches her in an attempt to take her soul to hell.
The noise startles the blacksmith awake. And he meets the demon before he can exit the house. The blacksmith fights to stop the demon from taking the girls soul. But the demon escapes out of the house, running and chanting that he will be getting the blacksmiths soul next, then suddenly the demon steps into a spring trap and screams. The blacksmith cages the demon again and cares for the girl's wounds. The little girl had fallen and hit her head when the demon dropped to the ground. While unconscious, she rests.
Later in the movie, the demon convinces the little girl to come with him to hell. To free him so he could reunite the little girl with her mother in hell. The little girl was told to be wary of the demon, to not listen to him. But when a moment comes where the demon can whisper into her ear, he does.
In the movie there are a lot of "Hollywood" religious themes. Above I've written my description of the scenes, I feel are important in telling a story that is not far from reality. In the movie, the blacksmith does save the little girl, by going into hell and ringing a golden bell to stun the demons. Before he went to hell, he convinced the demon to return the girls soul. They made another transaction maybe. I don't remember... But while the blacksmith is ringing the bell, the demon brought the girl's soul back. And the demon continued to walk on earth. Because he can't go back to hell. I didn't want to mention the end, or the weird parts where it seems like the movie is acting as the devil's tongue by "humanizing" demons through comedy. I don't care much for it. The story felt kind of ruined. But when you can correlate the physical representation of a demon being caught by a spring trap with the intended metaphor, it's pretty great, and less imposing. The movie is full of them.
Also, what I wrote is based on what I could remember of the movie. I just spent two hours writing this. It's six am....

You don’t hookup or date with somebody who is broken. Also, this sounds dark, but everyone goes away in the end. You can’t have someone forever, but you can love someone forever.
This issue is different for men and women as well(for obvious reasons).
Young(and elderly) Men often lack camaraderie. That simple camaraderie can ease suffering and give you confidence enough to seek what it is you really need.
The other one for men is purpose. I could go on and on about purpose so I’ll be concise. Find it. Be in service to others. It doesn’t matter how small.
You don’t have to save the world.
I can’t speak on this regarding women honestly. I feel that men can do better alone(socially) than women can. Generally speaking.
I’ll wrap this up with, suffering isn’t bad. Yup. A lot of people I’ve met can’t handle that one unfortunately, but it is true. I’m not saying you should seek suffering. Suffering has been a major catalyst for figuring out who I am and how I want to be. As well as what I definitely don’t want to be. How a man handles suffering can define who they are. Sometimes, your gonna make choices. Those consequences from you’re choices can cause suffering. That’s fine. You didn’t know. How you handle that. That’s what’ll define you, and it probably doesn’t make sense but I swear it makes you feel better. Not happy, but some sort of contentment.
If you read this all. Thanks. I’m a loner. I don’t hate people, but I keep to myself. You and me have value friend.

Once I asked God if He was real to come into my life and set me free from getting high all the time and help me feel better, He did. I'm no longer a slave, imprisoned by drugs and alcohol. I look back and see how fake, miserable and hopeless I was, but somehow deceived into thinking it was good. Crazy.
Jesus set me free from living as a slave to sinful thoughts and ways but I'm still not perfect and my life has new battles. But now I have real hope and so can you. It's true!
Jesus suffered and died on the cross to make a way for us to be redeemed and forgiven. Anyone who repents, turns from sin and allows The Lord Jesus to live in their heart by His Spirit of power, love and word, can be saved, delivered and set free from all that destroys them and their soul. And you can be resurrected to live in His eternal Kingdom where there is no more sorrow, no more sickness, no more tears, no more death and NO more pain. (read Revelation 21)

I think it is also is in the view of how separated they are compared to the world. A population of 50k, but they're so limited on resources in terms of "fun" or what they want to do. The privilege of going anywhere in terms of finding new adventure is at a grasp that we take advantage of.
As he explained, their form of fun is alcohol. Alcoholism is a reactionary to depression. Also there's apparently high rate of poverty, conflicts between family and internal relationships and dysfunctions in family households. Hard to have that but have literally no where to go. It's not like the United States or other countries where an issue like that is as easy as starting a new life. Which we take advantage of and we should know of that privilege but we don't notice it.
It's hard to ALWAYS get along or ALWAYS have the same thing 24/7 and be stuck on an island that is hard to just leave. An annual rate of 82:100,000. That means for every 1,219 of a person, there's a suicide within that statistic.
You can say that the view is amazing and you'd assume that would be tranquility, but in their mind it's a "beautiful" prison. It would only be amazing for those who have the advantage of wealth where they can come and go. Being able to stay there for vacation, for months or even years but the ability to leave anytime.

But we can all agree that it is SO empty and having constant people or motion around you is a good thing. It's per person, but you don't understand until you're in this situation and have to deal with it 24/7. Especially for the modern era and the children of that era. Before it was about surviving so you always had something to do and a goal. But in this video alone, it shows that they're living and finding reasons to live.

Cold weather isn't that big of a deal, but complete darkness certainly is. We know for a fact that vitamin D deficiency and limited sunlight usually has negative effects on people when it comes to depression and tiredness. Cold VS warm weather is a personal preference, I personally despise super hot weather and thrive in the cold. The bigger issue on Greenland is the fact that there's absolutely nothing to do compared to other places more connected to the rest of the world, that's why places like Northern Norway, Svalbard, Greenland and other such places have insanely high rates of alcoholism. No sunlight and nothing to do? Fuck it, let's just drink the day away

As a person from Russia I can really say that we struggle with depression a lot. What makes it even worse is the fact that we are not used to talking about that, we just pretend that problems with alcohol, constant depression and poverty don't exist. Luckily, I had a chance to travel a lot and I noticed that lack of sunshine make a huge impact on my mood and as I return home to constantly grey sky I feel like I'm just really broken and dead inside. Wow. What a heartbreaking video. Thank you for spreading more awareness about how dangerous feeling lonely really is. Thank you to Vittus for opening up and sharing his life, thoughts, and struggles with us. I honestly had no idea suicide rates were that high in Greenland. Makes me so sad knowing it's mainly men too... I can't imagine what it would be like to grow up in a small community where talking about feelings is unnatural. To have this ache and feel as if you have nothing to fix it with. Not to mention, the normalized alcoholism that I'm sure a lot of folks are using as a coping mechanism. I hope the government has some plan to make therapy and talk about depression more accessible and normalized. Having gone through depression myself, I empathize with the people there. I too know what it's like to feel stuck. I hope everyone who is going through a hard time in their life, that depression doesn't consume them.
In Vittus' words, " Just talk about feelings...Just talk about everything and don't be shy."

It's the loneliness of isolation. Not everyone is as nice as Luke but if they want to invite more people some including myself would love going just to see such a beautiful place (without tourist junk) and are just as lonely as well. It would be great for photographers and artists alike.

i’m a native in canada, manitoba to be exact. our suicide rate is pretty high as well, drinking is a problem for us too, generational trauma has robbed my people of our culture & teachings. seeing indigenous peoples of greenland being HEARD & seeing his story really resonates with mine, makes my heart feel so full. i hope you know how healing & impactful your actions are

The indigenous people of Greenland would technically be Norse right? They arrived first but they were gone by 1400 ad which is when the Inuit would’ve arrived

Yeah being native/indigenous in Canada is just like being a 2nd class citizen with how systematically oppressed they are as people. Doesn't help with how resources there are very limited and expensive.
Even if Canada as a country has went past the boarding schools they've made to neglect and abuse the kids that were forced to be there away from family, they've haven't done enough to compensate the generational trauma that has come as a result of this, if they've done anything at all.
Native communities in Canada are very similar to those in greenland in the way they've been treated until very recenly and still even now they're being forgotten about.
I live in Newfoundland, or natively known as Ktaqmkuk from one of the natives that have once inhabited them; the Mi'kmaq people. There once was another that mainly inhabited the island: The Beothuks. If you haven't heard about what happened to them, here's an abridged version: Europeen colonizers killed them, gave them diseases without any natural resistance, and neglected them until there were none left, and the Beothuks were left for dead.
Anyways, I wish you well, and I hope in the near distant future you and your people are compensated.
