F1's next big moves in wide open 2025 driver market

- There wasn't any movement on the Formula 1 grid between the end of last season and the start of 2024, but the 2025 driver market has already been blown wide open.
Lewis Hamilton's move to Ferrari leaves a vacancy at Mercedes while the recent Red Bull turmoil has even put into question Max Verstappen's future at the team.
Fernando Alonso might be weighing up one last roll of the driver market dice and who will form the final Sauber line-up before Audi enters F1?
Scott Mitchell-Malm and Ben Anderson join Glenn Freeman to discuss all that and more.

Its almost like we need another team with two open seats available
Two more RB cars, the team could be called BR for example.
@@st200olWith Andretti sponsorship. The team could be called... BRA
andretti.
Maybe Ferrari and Mercedes can start a B team with the money they have left over because of the budget cap Xd
I’d much rather we first sort out the quality of the grid, rather than the quantity of cars on it. F1 should first aim for every single seat on the grid be occupied by talented drivers that will bring performance to a team. I can think of at least 3 driver who could be replaced tomorrow with someone better, as of right now. Only if we’re still facing a situation whereby talented young drivers are not getting a chance, will I strongly advocate for there to be a new team. Andretti was exciting, it’s a shame they were rejected, but the door is still open for 2028 and I’m very much in the opinion that it was done on purpose.

Yes, he did show Yuki up, with couple more races, he would blow him away.
If Audi were building a team rather than taking over one, and Andretti were coming in there'd be 4 more seats available, and that would be far more exciting to me than "musical chairs."
agreed!
We don’t need more backmarkers lol, that’s what those two teams would be in their infancy. Current grid needs to sort its shit out. There’s already too many drivers that have not demonstrated that they belong in the pinnacle of Motorsport. Should get that sorted before some other shit teams are introduced. You think Andretti and Audi will be competing for podiums in their first few years? Keep dreaming!
@@EnfvntTerrible This Pinnacle of Motorsport is actually hilarious. F1 legit isnt in the top 10 series worldwide maybe even top 30 tbh, heck its not even the Best FIA series or single seater series, far from it.
F1 was popularised for innovation that can be applied on the roads, doesnt do that now thats Wecs job now, its a sport which means its entertainment, doesnt do that at all unlike every other series out there.
The idea we dont need more backmarkers is fine & all but you are basically saying it should be a 1 out, 0 in game & that nobody should ever get in. Which & fun fact F1 started as "who can build the best car, come challenge us" How did it fall so far from grace to become a closed group? Pinnacle of motorsport lol

@@EnfvntTerrible agreed. but the unfortunate reality is, a huge part of f1 is garnering fans for your team and sponsorships. and companies are more willing to sponsor a driver that many people like. the fact that danny ric has so many fans is the only reason he's still in f1. he's been given way too many second chances, and hasn't performed since his time at red bull. however, rb and red bull are gonna continue to keep him so they can do all their PR events with him and cash in the views!

Christ how many lines did Ben do before this podcast?
A lot of people keep saying that Antonelli will go to Williams, but you have been ignoring what Vowles has been saying many many times: Williams will give preference to their own drivers. They don't want to be simple placeholders anymore.
Also, so far, Antonelli hasn't shown a great deal yet. Shoehorning him into F1 next year may be very damaging
Well unless Williams starts seriously performing that's all they're going to be a placeholder team and they have been for a long time. People want both Antonelli and Bearman in an F1 seat although ideally in a seat where they can build experience. Williams seems a fairly obvious choice for Antonelli if they get rid of the useless Sargeant. Meanwhile Haas they have two seats occupied by two older drivers who are definitely looking past their sell by date. Perfect place for Bearman to go and get some experience.
Bearman in Haas next year is an almost 100% thing.
But you can't compare Haas to Williams in any way.
Gene Haas wants to spend as little money as possible, he is very happy buying everything he can from Ferrari and not having top drivers.
That's one of the reasons Guenther left the team.
Williams on the other hand seems very serious in "making it great again".
Again, it's not MY opinion, it's what James Vowles himself said many times: he wants Williams to stop being a back marker and placeholder team.
Will they achieve that? I hope so, but of course you can't be sure.
Also, Kimi Antonelli hasn't shown anything spectacular so far.
Of course, F2 has had only three races so far (six, if you count the sprints) and there are more 11 rounds to go. He can improve.
But so far he's been a tad behind the drivers that are on their second or third season.
I'm not saying he's a bad driver. He clearly is not. But his lack of experience is, so far, very obvious.
@@gabrieldias3479 if you look at antonelli's junior career so far it's been amazing. Unfortunately skipping f3 may not have been the best idea, I think he might need a couple of seasons in f2 if he doesn't end up fighting for the championship by the end of the season
Williams are a customer Merc team, I’m sure a few million off the engine deal would help. Money talks.
@@gabrieldias3479Williams won’t be great again unless they become a works team. They don’t have owners who are able to throw money at the project and other teams will move forward quicker. The only way they might win a race or two is if they exploit a grey area in the new regs like Brawn did.

Sainz could try another form of motorsport even if he isn't signed in 2025. Any team would willingly sign him taking his commitment to succeed into consideration. He'll have a relaxed career too compared to the likes of F1.
There is a possibility that Logan Sargeant & Danny Ric may lose their seats next year. So Sainz has a bunch of options open to be written off as unemployed. We'll definitely be hearing that Sainz got picked up by a good team at least before round 7 - 8 maybe?
Dumping Carlos for Lewis is the most "Ferrari being Ferrari" thing in a while. I guess they'll sell A LOT of Lewis+Ferrari T-shirts, and Ferrari is a T-shirt/hat company after all...

My opinion is Alonso is starting to look like a long game not a short game anymore. That man is like he respawned and entered f1 again. If he gets into a good team he'll surely play the long game.
I disagree. Alonso jumps from seat to seat finding the faster car. He doesn't help develop a team. As a team, is he really a good option if he ditches once another seat opens up?

If only there was another team on the grid........
If Checo keeps up his rate of P2s 2/3 of the time, I suspect he'll just keep his seat 🤷
This is going to be my first silly season and what a debut silly season it'll be
F1 should financially reward teams for taking on top drivers from lower classes. Too many mediocre drivers who keep their seats because they are "good enough" or "safe options", not enough churn and fresh talent.
Now there's a thought.
It doesn't even have to be straight up cash. Raise the team's cost cap by 10x what they pay the rookie (assuming a max rookie salary or 1m a year? I don't know how much rookies are paid). Give the team more wind tunnel time, or an extra engine replacement slot.
But, yes, incentives to take in rookies would be a good idea, especially for the lower midfield who DO tend to favor older drivers because they'd rather have the "sure hands" thing than, say, what they saw Mick do.
Then bottom end teams like Haas will end up signing Mazepin regens every year.
Why wouldn't you want a safe option in an F1 car?
I don't get this philosophy of putting external control on a team's important decisions. Just for fan service? Come on. Let them do what they think is best with their own cars.

Ricciardo is done, Checo is done, Bottas probably getting dropped. Yuki's not going anywhere, Stroll will be dropped when he's dead, Russell will stay put, Zhou will probably be at williams when Sargent get the boot.
Perez will get another extension tbh
Curious, Valteri Bottas was a great Mercedes driver and team mate. Any possibility Mercedes would bring him back? George and Valteri had one race together and it was going well until..... but they did make good team mates. Valteri has always been a good team mate.
0 chance for this to happen, Bottas' performance have fallen dramatically.
Don't forget Liam Lawson
Well Ricciardo and Zhou are definitelly going home next year, so it should free up a space for Lawson and Bearman, not so sure about Antonelli
It feels off for Toto to start courting Max Verstappen when just a few months ago he took a shot against Max getting 10 wins in a row after Italy on top of all the talk he's had against Red Bull, especially after Abu Dhabi 2021. I won't be surprised that it's borderline desperation because the rug has just been pulled from under him when Lewis announced a Ferrari move.
I fully expect Leclerc to wipe the floor with Lewis…

2026 we could see 4 top teams instead of 3 and good drivers spread in all of them.
Newey is 65. I can't see him starting a new project elsewhere and Red Bull know his worth. They'll give him what he wants.
It's not like Newey joined Red Bull and they were winning races the next year. The man took several years to build up a team and a department to get the car ready to fight for championships.
Even if he joined Aston Martin, I doubt he'd be able to do enough to prepare them for 2026, he'd only have one year.
