One of the biggest problems with creating KDP coloring books to self publish on Amazon is getting good quality images that can be used commercially and that are original. I show you how to find copyright free images online and then use a technique with the pen tool in Affinity Designer to create a colored image and black and white lined image. These are great for the covers and interiors of your coloring books. Using this technique could literally give you an unlimited supply of images that you can create yourself and create books to sell online.

This is awesome. I used to do colouring in for hours as a child. I also did painting by numbers. Never thought I could make a living out of keeping inside the lines, but I went on to work for a small animation studio, where, at peak times I would be hired by my husband to help him with the hand painting of all the little shapes, rather like this lion. And now I can use these techniques to come to the subject from a different angle. I have got so many ideas just from watching your videos, thank.

me too I'm horrible at drawing, so i use other pictures parts as sketch then make my own original drawing, for example if i want to draw a *cat* i grab his body from image 1, and eyes from image2, then a tail from another image and collect them then eventually add some details.
that's because i have no skills in drawing, but I'm trying to learn 😅

Well its a bit of a flaff using a pen tool if you are beginner using a mouse on a lots of details , however for a complete none techy way you could use old school .
1 print the picture fairly large size low quality on a piece of paper
2 get a 2b pencil gently rub pencil on its edge on the reverse of the paper so it covers the image area on the side
3 get a clean piece of paper a clip board put the clean piece under print image
4 carefully sketch around the outlines of the edges you want to transfer onto the paper using a bit of pressure with the pencil or pen
5 go over the transfered outline image with a black pen use a rubber to remove unwanted smugdes, get your outlined image scan that into your computer
6 retouch the image removing any grey bits in basic photo editor
7 put into your favourite background remover
8 oulined image good to go for colouring book
9 for colour make a copy image and use a paint editor to fill in desired colours
Or print the outlined image then colour in by hand and scan the image back computer
Also a bit of a flaff but more do- able for the less techy then fiddling trying to draw with mouse .

Wondering how long it took to complete this image? It seems a very labour intensive way of making a line image from a photograph, I'm sure I've seen other ways of doing it that are much simpler but perhaps not in Affinity?

    • @ShaloneCason
      @ShaloneCason Před rokem +9

It's going to take at least an hour per image, maybe longer. I use a similar method. And unfortunately, there aren't other ways to convert photos to coloring pages. Believe me, I've searched far and wide.
Graphite on Mac and iOS is the closest you can get, but it's not perfect.
The least labor intensive method is to buy coloring pages from a Fiverr artist or a vector stock site.

Affinity now has a new version, V2. Do you know if there are changes that affect the procedure you show for the lion? And do you use only Affinity Designer? Or have you found Affinity Photo or Affinity Publisher also useful for kdp? (They are offering all 3 of the new version at a special price) Thank you so very much for your excellent teaching!

    • @paulmarles

Hi !! This is awesome. I think photoshop does not allow me to switch between pen tool colorpicker and then filling option. It always wants me to raster the layer. Only the lasso tool allows me this, but then i do not have the outline to separate the different color areas. can anyone help me on this ? Thanks
