    Oh yea!!
    Transfer the timing mark to the front belt pulley and shoot it with a timing light(with an external battery) and mark the mag and base for a future reference.
    Just a little assurance thing so that you know where it is, rather than just guessing---although you had it pretty damn close.

    • @843chops
      @843chops  Před 2 měsíci +2

      Yep it’s close, I need to get it closer once I get the rings and everything fully seated. But not too bad for a first start after so many changes.

    Thinking outside the box like the 45 Magnum conversion with flathead lower end and Sportster top end.

      I want to do a flat head, I just haven’t found one for reasonable price yet. I really want a UL.

    @jaygee269 Před měsícem +1

    If you haven’t done it you should use the left foot brake shaft on the pre 1974 and older ironheads. that comes from the right side of the bike and goes to the left side. You’ll be able to connect a linkage right to that drum brake.

    • @843chops
      @843chops  Před měsícem

      That might be a future option with this frame, I don’t have a pre 74 frame to chop up and steal parts from currently.

  • @rustythrottle5713

    Success! Great job! I can only imagine how nerve-racking the thought of the initial start-up was. Building an engine is one thing, but cutting it in half and then hoping it runs afterward...

    • @843chops
      @843chops  Před 2 měsíci +3

      Oh yea man, that first cut with the saws all when I could see into the trans meant there’s no going back. Once you get past that though it’s really pretty straight forward with the Shortsters kit, definitely recommend his stuff for those project. Now I gotta clean everything up and make it look presentable for a bike show, we’ll try to at least.

    Very nice, great to see it running. A little jackshaft setup for the rear brake would would look pretty trick, but a cable would probably be easier to set up.

    • @843chops
      @843chops  Před 2 měsíci

      That would be sweet, I think I’m going to run a hand control for the rear brake, after messing with a few setups that will possibly be the cleanest and give me a hand brake for hills with the suicide clutch.

    Do you o ourself a favor use a front clamp for your exhaust and one on the rear. Spigot even with new exhaust and clamps still fall off.
    My experience with my ironhead.

    • @843chops
      @843chops  Před 2 měsíci

      Very true, this was a real quick mock up to get it running. The front pipe was actually safety wired to the frame during this video. I’m redoing the whole exhaust.

  • @Boreascorax
    @Boreascorax Před 2 měsíci +1

    As for the rear brake, how about running the drum minus the sprocket on the right and just a sprocket on the left?

    • @843chops
      @843chops  Před 2 měsíci +1

      If I had a lathe that could be an option, but I can’t make an adapter for the sprocket easily. After this video I ended up running the rear brake from a hand control on the bars.

      @@843chops Good fix. Worth considering that a lot of Jap bikes ran cable actuated rear brakes before discs became the standard. Cables sure save a lot of routing problems as compared to solid linkage. Really liking your project.
