"Put Away The White GUILT Everybody!" - British Empire's Role In Slavery Made UK 'Poorer Not Richer'

- The UK’s economic success is the result of “British ingenuity and industry”, not colonialism, a Cabinet minister has said.
Kemi Badenoch, the Business Secretary, made the comments in praise of a book published by the free-market Institute of Economic Affairs think tank, in which political economist Kristian Niemietz claimed Britain’s growth was not financed by the slave trade or its imperial possessions.
Ms Badenoch, seen as a leading contender for the Conservative leadership should the party lose the coming election, said the book was “a welcome counterweight to simplistic narratives that exaggerate the significance of empire and slavery to Britain’s economic development”.
She said: “This paper… shows it was British ingenuity and industry, unleashed by free markets and liberal institutions, that powered the Industrial Revolution and our modern economy.
“It is these factors that we should focus on, rather than blaming the West and colonialism for economic difficulties and holding back growth with misguided policies.”

International trade, technology, steam power, electricity, industrialisation, transport, communication, medicine, they ended the slave trade over 200 years ago, they gave the world their language, civil service, legal system and democracy ... to mention a few.
Of course there will always be some who are on the lookout for a handout.

My great grandfather went to India to design and build the railway. My grandad was born there whilst there. They still use that rail infrastructure today. They should be thanking us not asking for money!
@simonrichards6739 The Indian Railways were primarily used to move troops around India and to carry the stolen riches from India, to the ports to be shipped to England. The British Empire funded the industrial revolution, which made the wealthy richer and did little to nothing for the man in the street.

What is white guilt? Is guilt different from race to race? It's time we stopped using their bastardised english language terminology and speak properly again. Guilt is guilt, there is a clear definition of the word and adding "white" pink, blue, or black before it does not change that definition. The most important contribution was from the National Debt and Banking.
Also Agrarian improvements, canals, steam power, roads and child labour.

Slave trade profits were held withing certain families, we've always known that and we know it was Industrialisation that changed the whole country (not always to the best for commoners). This might just be the weirdest strawman argument to come out of this comedy channel.
Obviously white guilt is a stupid thing to begin with. However the Govt & its "East India Trading Co" did play a big role in starting western slave trade & that history should be rememebered.
Why that particular bit?
Nobody should be taught about anything considered bad that was supposedly done by the British unless they are also taught about the Barbary slavers, the other slavery our ancestors endured, or the fact there are more than twice as many people in slavery today as were ever transported in the transatlantic trade. We ended the trade, not just what we were doing. We paid to free the slaves. Which African nations did anything to stop the trade?

I was born in 1971,into a poor family in the North of England....over 50 years later I'm still poor and never once did I own slaves.....I feel absolutely no guilt whatsoever for being a white Englishman....I DO however feel HUGE resentment towards successive government's for what they have done to this country....and I feel even MORE resentment towards those who don't belong here,yet take everything ....I look forward to the day we decolonise our island and will feel no guilt about that either
