- Douglas Murray, The Spectator's associate editor, joins Cindy Yu to discuss why monarchies are good for politics. Americans have dynasties of their own - the Clintons, Bushes and Kennedys - why don't they understand kings and queens?

I caught the Ali Velshi nonsense with Andrew Roberts on MSNBC. The ignorance and the hypocrisy shocked me. Velshi's family are Muslims originally from Gujurat. I was in Gururat on business, 20 years ago, when Muslims were killed by Hindu mobs. Velshi was born in Kenya and grew up in Canada. Had it not been for the Commonwealth his family would probably still be in Gujurat. Colonialism allowed him to get to Canada.
Anglophile here. Lived in England for 4 years and love all my British cousins! Queen Elizabeth was so remarkable! Long live the King!
It's easier to blame Britain as opposed to hearing the truth and not liking what you hear.
The frustrating thing is a lot of my foreign friends have soaked up all this absurd negative press about the queen and it's made me realise how truly toxic this whole woke movement has become to our society...
As an American, I have always been fascinated with Queen Elizabeth II. I miss her already.
I'm American and I'm appalled by hearing this about your late and beloved queen. I have admired her for many years like many people here do. I agree with Mr. Murray, Americans know nothing of their own history must less another countries stories. Thank you for your well presented and well spoken discussion about American culture.
I lived and worked in USA in late 1990’s. Now back in U.K. but still have a house there and spend upwards of 4 to 6 months a year in SC. I have received numerous notes of condolence from friends and neighbours; all warm and compassionate and commenting on how QE II was a wonderful and inspiring person, steeped in tradition and duty.
Thank you Douglas.
I am in mourning for this great loss in our world. We are lacking in educations and exposing ignorance of the past.
I am an American. The United States is the success that it is BECAUSE of Great Britain. Canada, New Zealand, and Australia are also the good nations they are because of the English way.
I remember how we stood with the U.S.A when Kennedy was assassinated. No mention of his private dealings or the most horrible man his father was to Britain.
There are many Americans who respect the queen and the monarchy. However there are those who will always disregard what Britain has done for the world. Is it jealousy? The monarchy is not political and the head of state not part of politics, as such. Even though all laws have to have the consent of the monarch; and do we really care what they say? Years ago we would have known none of this. The media now give the twisted views of the few, a platform.
Australia's got it's share of these sort of journalists too. There's been a few truly offensive comments and takes on the Queen's death. Australian's understand the Monarchy (at least us older ones do), but I've got to be honest - American politics totally baffle me...
It's ignorance .
As an Irish person this is so rude…. To attack a family who are grieving.
In Canada the Queen was the Head of State. Now her son is. Canada was her second home. She visited Canada 22 times. More than any other country. I don't like it when they accuse the Royal family of colonialism. The present monarchy does not do that.
Does anyone care what Americans think about us brits🤔least of all us brits🤗
As you point out with accuracy the American media never tires of painting everything, including American history, the history of the British empire, etc. with the brush of racism. That’s the media for you. I take very much the opposite approach: where would India be without the introduction of parliamentary democracy, the unity of the country and separation of Pakistan, etc.?
I found the Monarchy easiest to understand through the ceremony of the removal of the Instruments of Office, at the funeral. You don't have to understand the Monarchy at every level in order to see the necessity for that role. I see the Monarchy as a continuity of legal authority. A Queen or King is not my spiritual mum or dad, and personally I had to pick the Christianity out of the ceremony for easier understanding. Another person might see the Defender of the Faith role as most important. Of course, the Queen was also a deeply respected human being. DM is absolutely right to point out that countries without a monarchy go to great lengths to recreate one.
Empty vessels make most noise. The ignorant have the most to say on everything.
