The way I see it, as soon as those red lights come on you're trespassing on the railway. And that carries a £1000 fine. That'd hurt, although still not as much as a train would.
For some people, the lights and audible signals have nothing to do with trains, only that gates are coming down to get in their way and might delay their travel for a whole minute. Occasionally it's the last minute they're going to have....
Clearly the delay is much more than a minute, muppet.
Unless you want that to happen to you...always wear a high visibility jacket.

The only real deterrent is to make the people who do jump them watch and view the film/pictures of whats left of someone when they are hit by a train and then fine them an extortionate amount ie: well in excess of £1000 depending on the circumstance.
In the U.S., the gate will just come down on the car.

When you see the gate coming down in the U.S., it's coming down, even if that means smashing your car. That's probably why most people stop when they see the gate arm start to move.
What's sad though is most people are probably more worried about the gate smashing their car than getting hit by a train. Getting hit by the gate should be the least of their worries.

A fact which many people actually don't know is that the yellow light actually means stop. You're only allowed to go through a yellow light if it means preventing a collision (don't brake so hard that it means the person behind you will go into the back of you) This applies with both level crossings and traffic lights.
I know, but the amber on traffic lights is just the make sure you are in the junction light.... ;)

It's bad enough when cyclists think red traffic lights don't apply to them, but something has to be done to change the attitude of so many people about level crossings...
Part of the issue at 6:16 seems to be that the traffic light was holding red while the crossing was activating. Here in America, usually traffic lights close the the crossing like that would turn green for a while to let people on the crossing get off of it before the train comes through.

Here in the UK as a driver your are required to keep the crossing clear at all times. The driver should have not crossed over if there is not enough space to clear the gate. Crossings with gates that block the crossing completely ( 4 gates ) are controlled my track signals and CCTV. Some now have a device that checks to see if anything is in the way ( known as Tic Tacs as they look like a giant version of the sweet / candy )
That's the law pretty much everywhere. Don't stop on the tracks, and don't enter the crossing if you would have to stop on the tracks, stop at red signal, etc.
When following a vehicle onto a level crossing there needs to be sufficient road space on the far side beyond the crossing for a vehicle of the size you are driving to be available before you enter that section of road. Amazingly in recent times they have painted yellow criss-cross "box junctions" which should not be necessary to cope with a simple principle. Drivers also seem to start when the gates go back up but you should wait until the red lights stop flashing. On a positive note it is amusing to watch pillocks making fools of themselves.

I am the other way round. If I see a train coming, I stop even if the lights have not come on yet. I did this on January 5, 2012. I thought the train was closer than it really was, and I was unsure why the gate was not coming down. It was at night.

The fact that the pedestrians and vehicles think it's okay to speed up while the barrier is half way down just to save a minute or two. If you get stuck half way on the track and a train is going 70 mph then the chances of you is probably 10% rate.
In my mom’s home town in Slovakia, the level crossings were removed and replaced by subways.
I was on my way to the stables with my mum and just as we were about to go on the crossing the yellow light came on, it was on a busy road and there was a car behind us so we had no option to speed up, luckily the light literally just came on as we got passed the stop line but we made it

It will be good! When you cross at red lights or amber get fined railway or who is responding for crossing gets money to make crossings safer. I hope we will have same thing with paying fine when crossing at red lights in Czech Republic, we have very big problem with misuses some leaded in crash like in Studenka (2015) where train at 160 km/h (100 mph) crashed into poland truck and destryed it. 3 pepole died and driver in train lost two legs. #StopMisuse

As with ordinary traffic lights, the amber light means STOP unless it activates after you have crossed the stop line or you are so close to it that to stop would be unsafe. So many do not get this right at ordinary traffic lights, and a good many fail to make sure they can clear level crossings in just the same way as some do with box junctions. A train could be as little as 27 seconds from the crossing when the amber light comes on.
So... never see a train coming through in these. Just how fast do they go through?

Some people are just so stupid this is why when i go on trains i avoid stations on level crossings i'm actually scared to cross a level crossing cos im scared in case the alarm sounds and the barriers come down when im crossing

If you're already on the crossing when it starts you have enough time to clear it. That's kinda the point of having the yellow light.

I see a lot of dangerous crossings in this video. Why, when the crossing activates, is there an intersection with a red light beyond it, such that the traffic is backed up into the crossing? As soon as the yellow light comes on at the crossing, the traffic light should cycle to green to get the cars off the crossing. If it is an intersection without a light, the side which crosses the tracks should have the right of way so cars aren’t stopping on the tracks.
In the UK the driving laws dictate that you should not enter a crossing unless the exit is clear. Also, a car should never stop in any yellow hashed box painted on the road. You can see those markings painted directly over the crossing. So, in this case the drivers are in the wrong. Although I do agree with your suggestion to help preventing this situation in the first place.
That's the law in most places though (i.e. don't stop on the tracks). In the U.S., the nearby traffic lights are usually timed with the railroad signal to help clear the traffic off the railroad crossing, just in case there are any stragglers. Gate comes down and blocks any new traffic from crossing (and will smash their car if they don't stop). It seems to work pretty well at clearing the crossing, even when there are people who illegally stop on the tracks.
You can eventually get banned from driving for stopping on those yellow zig zag lines on the road they are there for a reason
In heavy traffic, the average driver doesn't leave a huge gap between him and the car ahead even at a crossing, so I can understand why a car could be trapped there if the traffic signal is red. The driving laws in this case are expecting an exceptional level of alertness.

All you need is a police officer ticketing all vehicles that enter the box junction before their exit is clear. It is easy to not get stuck on these crossings.
It's in the Highway code, but easier to ticket speeding on an open clear road

@@nope6926 Most if not all of these crossings are CCTV crossings they do not stop by themselves when there is an object or a person in them a person stops them in the signal box/control centre/ROC that controls that area, they are then lowered manually once the signaller/crossing keeper is confident the crossing is clear. The only crossing on the UK network that have sensors are Obstacle Detection Crossings (OD), you can easy identify these as they have what looks like a large white tic-tac inside them. In most cases When an OD crossing activates the road traffic lights and klaxon come on then the crossing is scanned if clear the barriers then lower it then scans again once the barriers are down and then clears the protecting signal. If however there is an obstacle detected then the barriers raise and then go back down again if the obstacle is then still detected the crossing will show as failed to the signaller and the train will be cautioned across the crossing. OD crossing do not scan as the barriers are moving or after they detect the crossing as failed as this would give a false reading.

In Eastbourne the barriers come down when the train is miles away. You can see about a mile either way that nothing is coming, but you have to wait. Ridiculous. And if you get hit by a train, then it's Darwin.
What style of crossing was it. Found an informative video last week explaining why it can take a long time. Simply automatic barriers only cross half the road so if anything is on the tracks it can get off, trains will approach it on green signals. If they're full barriers and close the road usually the signals will be red for train (causing them to approach with caution) and won't get the green light until the crossing it classed as clear. There's a level crossing near me (St Georges Crossing, outside Worle station, Weston-super-Mare) which usually take a good 5 mins in total shut. But there's a train coming into stop at Worle and then another train just leaving Worle.
