Removing Our Boat's Hull Stripes. Did I mess It Up???

  • When we bought our current boat last year, the hull stripes were in tough shape and I had been planning on replacing them for awhile, but other boat projects took precedent on this 'new-to-us' Sea Ray. So this season, I decided it was time and I literally tore into removing the old stripes so that the work could be completed prior to our Spring Launch.
    As you'll see in the video, my haste got the better of me and I was left scratching my head as to how I could fix the mistake I initially made.
    For a look at all of the projects I've done (continue to do) on this beautiful Sea Ray Sundancer, as well as on our previous boats, have a look at nearly 100 projects in my 'How I Did It - Boat Repairs And Upgrades' playlist, here; • How I Did It - Boat Re...

    I just wanted to say that I used the same style eraser wheel and I ordered it from Amazon, now it was a trial and error process, my 82' 260 twin Sea Ray had the previous owner name on the back that was put on in 1982 and was baked on, well I started using the wheel not getting nice results but I kept trying and finally figured it out... you have to go slow and steady but not to slow or you will build up heat and start getting that burn finish and also the wheel seem to work better going in a particular direction and yes on a slight angle... your not the only one who experienced that weird burn.. but your finish job looks good!!!

    This has been a bit of an issue on my 2007 FourWinns 358. I’ve had good results making the old line disappear with Presta ultra cut compound. That stuff has removed everything, including the shadow of the old name on the back of the boat. The product you have used seems to be a bit of a compound, I’m surprised you’re not 100% happy with the results. I also use Jescar to « wax » my boat. That stuff is awesome. Keep up the good videos. I’m using your toilet seal video to do my own in a few days. Lake Champlain here I come!

    We just dropped our boat in the water this past weekend on Lake Erie. It's a 2002 Searay 300 and I was just telling my wife I think I want to take the stripes off of it cause they are beat up. And then your video pops up. Thanks for the tips. It sure looks sharp when it's in the water and definitely a little more modern. I've also toyed around with the idea of replacing the SeaRay decals on the arch with something more modern/custom. Thanks again

    • @BoatingWithBoogaboo
      @BoatingWithBoogaboo  Před rokem

      Glad it helped! My next step will be removing the pinstripes on the deck, as they are peeling off and looking out of date. We'll be leaving the '370' and the 'Sundancer' name & setting sun logo for now. If anything, I'd replace those two with factory original styled decals, as I found a company online that reproduces them. That way, they would be period correct, as opposed to some boats I've seen that went with the ultra modern, square looking lettering seen in the newest Sea Ray boats...

      We're very happy with how it looks and I'm looking forward to getting the pinstripes removed on the upper deck. They've also seen the end of their lifecycle and are starting to peel up. Now that I've got the technique mastered, it should result in a good outcome 👍
      Our launch went perfectly! That was a last minute decision, as I had been figuring on around first of May(ish), but opportunity knocked and in we went. I'm just working on a few post-launch items now and looking forward to the return of the incredible summer-like weather we had last week.
      . . . And, we watched your windy launch video and wanted to congratulate you guys! I must say that, after the first or second try getting her into the slip in those conditions, we would have just picked an empty one for the night and moved over the following day. Hi Paul Yes the yellow discoloration will polish out and you will be left with the Virgin gelcoat that has been protected since day one. That's why it feels and is raised ever so slightly. I was a collision mechanic for 30 years and Sign and Graphic installing for the last 12 years I found that WURTH makes a far superior strip it wheel much better than 3m or unipro. I de-striped my 330DA last year using a whizzy wheel and did not have any residue. I like the clean look and will de-stripe the top side later this summer. I also raised my bottom paint level about two inches to avoid the brown stain from lapping waves.

    Nice one Paul, as usual. I did remove my stripes last spring but I had used the whizzy wheel which was NOT solid like yours. Mine looked like offset blocks almost, maybe you have seen them online. I figured maybe it would help with heat. It went incredibly easy and quickly. zero residues. also, my stripes were not the original and were much thinner. (I also use the 49 with a very light touch - so you are not alone...) (I had to edit the comment because i thought it was a 3M. i checked and its a whizzy....)

      Since removing the port side stripes past November (the ones that looked really bad), the yellow streaks have almost faded away completely. I'm guessing it was due to five month's exposure to direct sunlight and UV...?

    The rubber wheel worked very well. Is the striping the original? Maybe the vinyl is brittle (aged) making it difficult to remove.
