Can China's Comac break up the Airbus-Boeing duopoly?

- China is on a mission to break up the Airbus-Boeing duopoly and it hopes the domestically made Comac C919 will be its first big break into foreign markets.
Made by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (Comac), the passenger aircraft has been touted as the “dream of a nation” by Chinese President Xi Jinping.
If successful, the C919 would offer airlines an alternative to the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 families.
However, there are still several hurdles Comac would need to clear before it could take on the French and American aerospace giants’ dominance.
Today, the bulk of the C919 orders, which can be outfitted with up to 192 seats, are from domestic carriers and Chinese companies that lease aircraft to airlines.
GallopAir, a new Brunei-based airline, is the first carrier outside of China to order the C919. They have ordered 15 C919s and 15 ARJ21s, Comac’s small jet aircraft.
The airline will launch at the end of 2024 with the ARJ21, according to its CEO Cham Chi.
“As a customer and operator of China’s Comac products, we can get financial support from China’s import-export bank, and also central banks,” Cham told CNBC in an interview.
According to Cham, Comac said it would consider creating aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul support for its aircraft in Brunei.
“For the first and second aircraft, we’ll still need to fly to Shanghai for MRO,” he said. “After three to five aircrafts have been delivered, then we can start MRO in Brunei.”
The future production rate, especially for the C919, remains in question for Comac.
“It’s a big question, having only delivered four aircraft over the last several years,” Adam Cowburn, managing director of Alton Aviation Consultancy told CNBC.
“Industry analysts will look at production rate to understand at what rate they are going to start to meaningfully chip away at the market share of Boeing and Airbus. Our models predict that was still quite some time out,” Cowburn said.
Brendan Sobie, an independent analyst from Sobie Aviation said that Comac’s aspiration is to have international sales, though it will take time.
“Airlines want that third option after Airbus and Boeing, particularly given Boeing’s issues recently,” he told CNBC.
Boeing has been hit with a multitude of safety issues, particularly involving their Boeing 737 Max.
“It’s still early to say whether [Comac] is a serious competitor in the long run,” Brendan added.
Watch the video above to learn more about Comac’s origins, and whether it has what it takes to disrupt Airbus and Boeing.

Most budget airlines from South East Asia are still rely on Airbus & Boeing fleet. For Comac flight become viable is to lease the aircraft to regional operators to minimize the cost & maintenance issues. By the time matures, confidenence will grow & order will increase eventually.
Comac doesn’t have to exceed Airbus or Boeing sales to have an impact on the market. Over a 1000 already ordered planes is already this very impact.
The sister aircraft, the ARJ21 saw its first delivery in 2015 and now, almost 10 years later, annual production looks to be around 24-36 craft/year. I have never built a civilian aircraft myself, but it is probably not an easy thing to do.
ARJ's market is more limited though, and as China's first domestic airliner, not surprising that production rates have not been that high. On the other hand, its safety record after 9 years seems to be okay, and that's the one thing you need to get right in this sector. The day COMAC does get into a groove, and especially if/when local supply lines are all set up within China itself, then watch out because at that point they can and will crank production. Planes are the hardest things to be build, but China has achieved similar results now with trains, cars, and ships, and eventually they'll get there with planes as well.

This is probably worse for Boeing than Airbus since Comac could capitalise on the current controversies with Boeing.

The airbus and boeing guys are trying to make us believe it will take china ages te be Ready which is ofcourse funny and they giving al lot of reasons which they think will stand in the way, they clearly haven't learned that when china want something at a certain time I will het whatever it takes.
@@Rihno377 just wait and see. ;)
FAA is a national joke 😂😂
Asia needs to step up its game in every sector and collaborate among each other
There’s NO WAY I would get on that 💀
For real 😆
I'd take it over any 737 Max
I will .
You are not alone most people in the world won't risk their lives with China made airliner, even though 70-80% of its parts come from US and EU, Comac has been begging the countries to buy from them since the early years of the C919 development program, but with little success.
@@JigilJigil source ? Proof ?
They probably do a better job than Boeing
Remember that Chinese airlines in general are amongst the safest in the world, and China Southern has more flights and also a higher safety ranking than Delta and United according to JACDEC
The Chinese FAA takes safety very seriously - they were the first FAA in the world to ground thr 787-MAX whereas the US FAA succumbed to political pressure from Boeing until well after the second crash
Well the question is how many parts and then I mean all the little parts as well come for the US and Europe for it to function.
For it to be a fully home grown Chinese plane.
