      I would give Kane any amount we can afford, for any length of time he is willing to stick around (within reason). The reality is that it probably isn't the team's decision if he comes back or not.
      On the one hand, he says that he likes playing in Detroit. On the other hand, now that he has proven that his hip isn't a problem, he could sign with another team for more than Detroit could afford to pay him, or he could sign with another team which has a much better chance than Detroit of winning another Stanley Cup before he retires, or both. The question is if he likes playing in Detroit enough to forgo these opportunities.

      Kane is gone next year. This year was a good choice for him to come to Detroit and rehab his hip surgery and not worry about playing hard physical playoff hockey. Now he can spend the summer in the gym and sign with a contender next year. Listen to any of Kane's post game interviews, he never says anything about next year with Detroit, he never says "we" or "my team" its always like he's talking about someone else's team. Would I like to see Kane in a Red Wing uniform next year sure but I'm not holding my breath.

      Kane is a genius, but not many Wings are like him. Perron, Valeno, Copp, Fisher, Rassmussen, ALL underperformed and not one of them stepped up when they were needed. The Wings have ONE good scoring line, but it simply isn't enough. The second/third line players are NOT producing. Wings cannot win with this team.

    • @brandons9138
      @brandons9138 Před měsícem +2

      @@mysticone1798 Are you kidding me? At one point during the season the Wings have the most players with double digit goals in the league. They have scoring all up and down roster. At the end of the season they have 13 players with 10 or more goals. That's more than Tampa, Boston, Colorado or Vancouver. I'll agree that they still need more production overall, but to say that they only have one scoring line is just not true.

      Soderblom is one of those players who has some extra time on his side. His progression has been suck, dominate, repeat. It makes sense that he is struggling on the Griffins and couldn't hang in Detroit because not only does he need to improve his speed, not just on the ice but between the ears, he is on the small sheet where things happen faster and his reach is compromised by the lack of space. Think of Tage Thompson. This kid still has a ton of potential and he's going to be given every opportunity. In order to earn another shot he has to produce. Realistically I think he has two more years to make an impact before he's written off, maybe 3. Giving up too soon with all of the potential there would be a big mistake.

But they didn't want to play him too many games so that he couldn't be sent back down to Grand Rapids, in case Detroit didn't clinch a playoff spot.
    GR had already mathematically clinched a spot in the AHL playoffs. So even if Berggren is ready to be a full-time NHLer, for this spring he is better off playing in the playoffs in the AHL, instead of just watching the playoffs on TV in the NHL.

    I actually feel like Berggren may stay. Wings won't keep all the guys we have going to free agency and Berggren could fill a hole, and rather cheap. With Raymond and Seider going to be getting the big bucks and all. Berggren was/is unhappy due to lack of playing time, but that may change. If Det doesn't see that changing and Yzerman goes free agent pool, yeah he could be out.
    As for Kane, I'm not sure. Sure he could hop to just about any team out there now that he's proven he still got it but he did pick to come to Det. Part of that was Yzerman but a big part was Debrincat as well. Sure he could try to get on a contender but at same time, most of those teams are fairly close to or at cap with their main pieces all in. And Kane most likely wouldn't get any big role like he does here in Detroit. Just not sure he's willing to ditch his friend and one of the few teams that believed in him while he was at his lowest point in his career. Well, that and I don't think he's ready to be just some third line guy either.
    Should bring back Veleno, though he'll get a raise for sure. He's worth more than the like 850K he made last year. How much more, I'm thinking 2-3M.

      @gwydion2418 Před měsícem

      If Berggren stays I would be shocked. Every guy on this list could leave with the exceptions of Raymond and Seider and I wouldn't care that much. Fischer was good for penalty killing and 4th line minutes not to mention that during Larkins absence he was one of the few guys that stepped up beside Raymond but only if he sticks around on the cheap, he will never be more than that 4th line penalty killer. Gostisbehere was good on the power play but defensively he's bad I wouldn't pay him more. Perron if he sticks around for half price maybe for depth but I wouldn't count on it. Same with Kane if he plays a full year for the same price or slightly more but I have a feeling someone else is going to offer him a boat load and I wouldn't go there.

    • @Detwhat
      @Detwhat Před měsícem +2

      I don't think Veleno is worth 3 million. I also don't think Copp was worth his contract either. I like Fischer, but guys like him are more easily replaceable. I'm in the minority on Ghost. I think we should try and resign him. We didn't bring him here to be a stay at home defenseman. Yzerman knew this. He was brought here to replace Hronik offensive numbers. Ghost was extremely valuable on our PP and is a solid QB who can spring our forwards. I would love to see Kane resigned. Not just because he was a point per game guy, but his presence helps the younger guys and gives them more opportunities. If Kane didn't come to Detroit. Raymond probably doesn't get 30+ goals and 70 points. Kane freed him up. I would keep Sprong if we can't find a better replacement. But I wouldn't give him a long term deal for more than 3.5/4 million. I would keep Perron if he took a pay cut. I think he's a good leader. People are complaining that we will only have the 16th overall pick. We picked Larkin at 14 or 15th overall..I think it was 14th overall. I could be wrong. I would trade the 16th and Rasmussen for the right player though. I believe Yzerman will try to resign Kane. I think Kane believes in what management(Yzerman and Company) are doing. I also believe he could sign with a contender for a cup run. But he came here because of our young talent, he believes in them and Debrincat is a close friend. I think Yzerman will make a trade, I believe he will be active in free agency. I also believe you will see Edvinsson start in Detroit next season. But he desperately needs to improve on his position play. The last couple games he was directly at fault for 3 goals. You can tell he's very hard on himself. But if we are to improve, our young guys like Edvinsson have to step up..like what Raymond did. When Larkin went down he stepped up. But, like I said, having Kane freed him up. We need Kane back and Ghost.

      @@Detwhat Veleno yeah, I'm thinking closer to 2M at most. I to would like to see Ghost back. He's our PP quarterback but we'll see, many are saying he could get 7-8M on open market. Is he worth that much, I'm hesitant. I also want Kane and for the same reasons. He's a been there done that solid veteran presence that has 3 Cups. His work ethic and mind set alone make him worth more than the 2.7M he made last year. If he wants to chase a Cup with someone else, I can't fault him either. I'm picturing around 5ish for like 2 more years. Copp is overpaid, Ficher is good for something identical, he's like a classic grind line guy. Edvinsson will be a regular next season and I've overall been impressed with his play in first season. Sure he has made mistakes as all rookies so. But he shows flashes of greatness like how he scored his last goal. Very veteran like calm maneuver where most his age would just try to make a safe play. He takes risks and it did bite us a few times, but he's not afraid and that's what I like. He wants to be a difference maker and make things happen. He'll learn with time and through mistakes how to best manage making those plays.

    Yzerman is going to look to dump some bad contracts this off-season. Wouldn’t be surprised if he gets rid of a contract and sends Copp or Sprong to spice up the trade. Kane just wants to play with people he has connection with hence why he came to Detroit to play with DeBrincat he’s not cup chasing.

    • @TheG35coupe
      @TheG35coupe Před měsícem +1

      I agree - there were lots of team interested in Kane - namely the Rangers who were (and still are) in a much better position at winning a Cup than Detroit. Kane knew Detroit wasn't a cup contender this year, but he did believe that they could make a playoff run. So part of me thinks that Kane would like to be on a Cup contender, but he cares about his role, the organization, the coaching/structure - how HE fits with the team. He could've easily walked back onto the Rangers, but chose Detroit. This is the art of negotiation - he's playing his part to get a good, long-term offer - but if it doesn't work out in Detroit, he's ok with walking away. But i think he'd like to stay with Detroit (for all the reasons above) and he knows Detroit will be in the playoffs regularly now on.

    As it currently stands we have no 2nd line. Copp-JT-Ras is probably the most expensive 3rd line in the history of the NHL so its a good one yet none of them belong on the 2nd line. We have to build a 2nd line in free agency. Kane left a bad taste at the end of the season so IDK about him. I don't know how much we can rely on Kasper, Berg and Soder and what their roles are since Stevie perplexly overpaid a bunch of 3rd liners and gave them too much term . Then we have to get a competent goalie on a short term deal. Then we have to cut the dead weight on defense. Mo-Ed-Chariot-Walman are the only ones who should be back and since I don't see us snagging an upgrade in FA we'll have to rely on our young guys who should be ready(Johansson, Wall, Bium). Do the usual Stevie Y and add in some has been vets for depth. Gost probably priced himself out. But first and foremost we need to fire the pitfall Landonde AND GET A REAL NHL HEAD COACH! So 1-Fire Ladonde 2-build a 2nd line 3-Goalie 4-Cut the deadweight on defense= a playoff team next season.

      "Kane left a bad taste at the end of the season"
      Kane in his last 10 games had 4g/4a/10pts, a game winning goal and a walkoff shootout winner. He had the late 3rd period goal to tie at Washington and salvage a point, the late 3rd period brilliant set up and pass on the 4 on 3 power play to tie at Florida and salvage a point, a gorgeous no look backhand goal to go up 1-0 vs Tampa and set the tone for a huge win, a highlight breakaway goal vs Buffalo to make it 2-0 and help get a huge win, 2 pretty primary assists at Toronto including the game winner by Larkin to keep the season alive which was entirely a world class play by Kane, he literally threw it into the net off Larkin's stick; and then the shootout winner in the final game.
      That's just the final 10 games, mind you. And for half of that he was absolutely buried w garbage linemates so Raymond could feel like a star.
      Glad to see most Wings fans are less awful and ungrateful.
