@@xlynx9 of course, all these ancient Chinese wisdom stuff was because there were a looot of scholars and these stories were meant to be understood by the value it’s emphasising, then people shorten the story to only a few words which is a proverb for the value, so when people mention the proverb no one actually thinks of the story, just the lesson

Magikarp evolves into Gyrados, Dragonair evolves into Dragonite, I don't really see why it should be otherwise, but that's just me. I always liked Magikarp, because it struck me as such an underdog Pokemon who could transform into one of the coolest Pokemon ever. And hearing this story makes me love it even more
He is refering to just the models used for dragonite vs gyarados.
In the story the golden koi turns into a golden dragon, but a golden magikarp he turns into a blue "dragon". The blue dratini/dragonair turns into a golden dragon. The color pallets don't really fit.
If you only swap what they look like (keep names/stats/moves/etc), the current serpentine gyarados looks like a beefed up serpentine draginair and the current dragonite looks like a fat magikarp turned into a fat dragon.

The only reason why Gyarados isn’t water/dragon is because in gen 1 having a water/dragon type with great attack, good speed, decent bulk, and good move pool (not to mention these were the pre special attack/ special defense split days) would be way too overpowered. W/ the only other dragon type being the dratini line, literally it’s only check would’ve been dragonite. Seeing as how you can get magikarp relatively early in the game, having that type of overpowered monster would’ve broken the game, even more broken than it was that is lol

So I've done some research (tbh just watch Lockstin and Gnoggin's videos) and I know why Gyarados is water/flying and not water/dragon or dragon/flying, is because in Chinese folklore, kois who turned into dragons must keep their honor and defend everything in the land. If the dragon thinks of nothing but destruction and carnage, the Gods reduce their ranks down to nothing but a giant sea serpent. And guess what, in the Pokedex, Gyarados's mind is so full of violent nature, that one rage last for a month. So yeah, Gyarados is just a giant sea serpent because the Gods, in this case Arceus, reduce it's rank to a giant sea serpent than a dragon
So, there must be another magikarp evolution which type is water/dragon to represent a koi fish succesful becoming a dragon
@@superzhuver but if you look at it from a design standpoint gyarados looks more similar to how dragon are depicted in Chinese folk lore. Dragonite looks more like a westerns type dragon than Chinese type dragon

Well yeah but I mean do Dratini and Dragonair look anything like Dragonite? Or do they look more like Gyarados? I think the only thing Magikarp and Gyarados have in common is the whiskers. Dragonite has nothing in common with its pre-evolutions. Meanwhile, Dratini, Dragonair and Gyarados are all blue serpentine shaped water-type-looking pokemon.
Thats the whole fucking point magikarp is based around that story. And in the story its turn into a dragon so it fits perfect

Because the ideia in Remoraid is a revolver, so he is based on a fish that, in real world, can shot water like a gun when he is hunting. And what is the evolution of a revolver? A cannon. So nothing better then an octopus to inpersonate that ideia.

@tiki taka ph Never liked Octillery much, but back in my younger days, when I would catch everything, I named mine Toxotibang (combination of Toxotidae - the fish that Remoraid is based on - and bang - as in a shoting sound) when it was a Remoraid. I think I know the reason why Gyarados was a flying type instead of dragon, because adding the dragon typing to it will make it too op and will cancel out it's electric type and grass type weaknesses which is really good. For Mega Gyarados though, I don't know.
Plus Magikarp is really easy to get because of it's chance of getting by any rod is really high.

He means that it is hard, not that it isn’t. I know this from personal experience, as in Kanto you can only get magikarp at level 5. Later games practically give you gyarados for free.

Magikarp and Garados are a game mechanics way of teaching Patience. In Gen one and any time a newbie gets it's a weak pokemon but through perceverience and time ( as the mechanic of evolution through experience shows) you will evolve and it's a payoff that is really good. Also by level 20 or so you get surf anyway so if you don't have a Lapras, Garados is your surf user on the team.
No mather how many times people bully it it never stops jumping.

But beside that, its also a flyer becauce its wings. So its unusual to give him dragon type when he needs to be a flying type to becauce it should fly. Altara is a pure fly type but beside that u can't think of a 2 typing, beside dragon. I think thats the real reason why charizard is just Fire / Flying and altaria Flying / dragon.
And the reason why Charizard mega X becomes dragon is more i think of " Well charizard is a dragon pokemon ( lizard ) so why not just give him that type in a mega form "

Originally (in gen1), gyarados was part water part dragon. So were charizard and aerodactyl instead of flying. But after the detailed tests it was pretty obvious how OP those would be. I mean you wouldn't even hesitate not to pick Charmander as starter. But gyarados would be way too op with these stats and no weakness. they also wanted to have a unique dragon to stand out, yet not to make it so unbalanced (reason dragonite is part flying).
This is what creators had said in an old game freak interview.

The moment I learned about Gyarados, it's a basic Pokémon I use it in each game :P Having a "dragon" in your party that early in the game is awesome :P
For me though it's dragon attacks are not my main focus though. I always let it have SURF, I always let it have bite or crunch, I always let it have ICE beam. And then probally a dragon move just for fun xD It's quite the powerhouse and helped me out a lot :)

It has to do with the myth where a weak fish jumps over a waterfall and becomes a strong dragon.

I'm trying to power level my Magikarp now in Diamond.
He's level 19 and my highest level Pokemon. It hasn't been easy. Even when he gets an actual attack, he's super useless.
I put him as the starting pokemon so he's involved in every fight. He's been leeching off every other pokemon I have but he's so close. I'm going to be so happy when this is finally done.

Fun fact: it was actually intended for magikarp to becone dragonite and dratini and dragonair to gyrados. A glitch swapped the lines, but by the time game freak noticed, red and blue had been out for 3 months, and they decided to leave it.
I think that Garrido's was switched with dragonite because in the story the fish turns into a golden dragon which is dragonite

Pomeg berry glitch isn’t that complicated,i’m pretty bad with computers and technical things but I was able to get a missingno that make the cloning glitch even more easier and I was able to get the eon ticket,the Aurora ticket and the old sea map.(where to activate them you have to make lots of other glitches where one implied to use a dewgong with an infallible priority one-hit ko glitch move into battle pyramid and get the gold symbol,I know it sound weird but it’s all true).It was hard but it was pretty fun,if I was able to do that everyone can.if someone don’t believe me there is a channel that showed all the method but I won’t name it cause I don’t want to publicize channels into another channel.
