I have rode Harleys for close to 30 years....I was HARD CORE Harley-Davidson to the bone. I have owned MANY of them...My last FLHT almost sent me to the poor house in maintenance, so after doing my research & homework on BMW....I made the switch. I bought a new R1200RTP....and never looked back. If someone told me I had to switch back to HD, I swear I would start crying! LOL!!! I am SOLD, SOLD, SOLD on BMW. They are INCREDIBLE machines! There is nothing out there like them! As a matter of fact, a year later, I just bought my 2nd BMW! Absolutely LOVE them! They are EVERYTHING Harley is not....LIGHT, NIMBLE and F-A-S-T!!! (....and they don't beat you to death).
    Never again Harley-Davidson....
Do yourself a favor and just go take a BMW for a test ride....but I have to caution you....YOU BEST BRING YOUR CHECKBOOK!!! You WILL need it because you WILL be riding one home!

@Rodney Chersky: the interesting thing is, with all the heartache and expense many Harley riders experience through ownership, BMW has a poorer reliability record than Harley. Money spent on repairs is also more expensive on BMWs than Harley. I rode Harleys years ago and learned my lesson. I ride Metrics now, and a riding buddy has an R1200 that is very nice. He's never had a problem with it. Another friend drives BMW autos and has a Beemer bike as well, but he never rides it. I've never seen it, but a few other mutual friends have.
In a four year evaluation, the only major motorcycle brand that had more failures than BMW was CanAm. Many of the failures were "minor" where the cost of repair across all brands varied from about $200-500. BMW was in the high end. Suzuki, Indian and Victory didn't have enough participants to get good sample data. Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha were all at the top with Yamaha having the tiniest edge and rated the most reliable. Ducati didn't fair well and was close to BMW. Triumph was in the mid range.
CanAM bikes had about a 40% failure and pretty much 1 out of 3 Beemers.

My background included only two FLH Harleys, followed by Suzuki, Yamaha, and Kawasaki. I took about eight years off with no riding, and when I returned, I got the R1200rt and, just like Rodney, would never, ever think of any other cycle for me right now. You gotta get what is best for you in this cycle thing, and I got mine. And this K1600B seems to be light years ahead of anything in its class. For me. Buy whatever you like, but many, many riders are gonna choose this proven brand.

Hey Nathan, great review, and thanks for taking me back home to the Diablo Valley.
Been holed up here in Seattle for four years now and I sure miss the wide open spaces of the BayArea. Had many services at Diablo BMW back in the 90's. Getting ready to take command of an '18 K16GT as soon as the boat docks. Keep the rubber side down!

I've ridden/owned pretty much everything at sometime in my life when 2 wheels are concerned. My favorite, long distance/touring machine is the K1600 G.T. with a bench seat and larger windscreen! I've added some mini floor boards and lights but other than that...It's the best bike I've ever ridden from everyday to interstate! I just keep my maintenance up to date and go everywhere! I've never had any issues of some "fast" bike blow past my ass! Just sayin...

A many loyalists from HD would never consider another brand. Too bad. For a myopic view about life has serious limitations. This bike needs however, as great as it is, smaller, blackened pipes. A single seat factory option also.

    • @MotoCampAdventure
      @MotoCampAdventure Před 7 lety

You may be right. I can imagine a hardcore HD loyalist hoping on one of these for a test ride and realizing he/she could be spending less money on a way more fun bike. Who am I to judge that, though? I haven't even ridden a cruiser of any kind. I just know that raw hp and torque would hook me immediately.

Good review. 2 questions, the floor boards are right next to engine - the side of your shoe looks like it would be touching the engine casing, does it get hot? I've only ridden an RT but assume a B is more comfortable than RT and GT?

    • @rzatek

I rode a B today and I own a 2014 RT. B is much more comfortable to ride and my feet were fine on the boards. It was just over 80 F today, maybe if it was 90 or 100 they would be hot.

I want to ride one. I ride Harleys as well and I love their simplicity but after buying a 2017 F700GS I urge every rider to try a BMW. If you like to ride, you'll appreciate a BMW. They are beautiful machines and the B looks phenomenal. The BMW's price may look high at first but unlike Harleys, you don't have to change anything to get them to run or be comfortable. I will never stop riding Harleys and I will own another BMW.

The K1600B base price is $19,995 fully loaded $24,885, less that a Harley FLH and to get a Harley that makes even close to the same power you are talking $40,000+. But without the handling, brakes or stability, let along the flexibility.

Since you seem to be the only dealership in the country that has the ability to actually ride the bike can you make a video for current BMW owners? This one was obviously aimed at Harley riders. We don't need a "sell" on the power and handling. We know about that already. More on the differences between this one and the GTL/ GT (stability, feel, right position, electronics, upgrades, etc). Also, you should be wearing BMW gear!

Terrible wind protection, beats you to death on the highway, uncomfortable, hot as hell on a summer day, etc. I like these Beemers but what about maintenance costs?? Thanks for your questions - I looked into it and it appears the first major service is at 18,000 miles. Cost of service is going to vary from shop to shop but the costs are comparable and even cheaper than other brands. As for the quickshifter - it works for both up and downshifts. @roadglide Před 6 lety

      BMW Motorcycle Reviews
I like the color but it’s not a K1600 b bagger. It’s got a non-removable top box. It’s called the Grand America and has been speed limited to 100mph. Check out BMW spec sheet. Due to lift at speed. Why didn’t BMW consider this in their design. My guess, rush to market on adding a top box just to grab more Ultra Classic or Road Glide Ultra customers. Not happy about that.

Road Glide I’m aware as noted in other comments. While i would question your need to go above 100mph I certainly understand why this an irksome feature on paper. I can’t get inside of BMW’s mind but I can tell you that it’s slightly disappointing when you consider how well BMW usually engineers their motorcycles. Thanks for watching & ride safe.

Hey Nathan, nice review, brother. Looks like a Road Glide?!? Ah, no dude. Not even close. The Concept 101 bike looks Waaaay better! I just wish the production K1600B machine looked more like the Concept 101 bike. It lost quite a bit in translation. I understand the need to save money and cut costs, but they went too far. This is bordering on being a dumbed down pretender. Shame that. I might go ride one anyway to see how she looks in person. I ride a '14 Victory Vision now, so this bike really has to wow me in order for me to give it up.

Hey Black Dog! As it turns out the K1600B is out of my price range. I was hoping it would come in lower than the GT, and it does somewhat, but not enough for me to seriously consider one. Oh well, my loss. Not really though, nothing is going to be more comfortable nor more reliable than this Vic. So I kept the Vision and bought another bike that I am totally stoked about. So it all worked out. Maybe in a few years I can revisit this situation.

What makes Harley better is this: you can make your own. You customize it. There seems to be little room for customization. Shift assist? Come on man... Not gonna lie the bike looks sleek. But HD has nothing to worry about. Different markets. It is useless trying to compare the two platforms. HD is more than the bike itself- it is a true American icon however I digress. This Beemer is super nice, however unless it is cheaper (a lot cheaper) than a Road glide as shown in this video, I don't think you going to get waves of members from HOG jumping ship anytime soon.

I have persoanlly tested the K1600B, speed limited to 130mph, on Hwy 212 between Alzada, MT and Belle Forche, SD, even passed a semi doing about 70mph in the process, the bike stable as rock at 130mph in the wake turbulence of a semi. Try that on a Harley, forget that the Harley death wobble comes in at at between 95 and 105 mph.

I can't see a Harley lover buying this bike unless they are tired of riding a classic styled cruiser. I can see a Harley rider switching to an Indian but not to a K1600 bagger clone. I think a valid reason to switch would be a more performance oriented ride that is very capable of long distance two up cruising, and that would be a K1600GT or GTL. BMW and other manufacturers are light years ahead of Harley in the technology arena but will never achieve the legacy status of Harley unless they buy a name like Indian. Again I'll reiterate that the BMW bagger will be a loser unless you hand over the entire design direction to Rolan Sands.

I'm a harley guy for 20 years and I'm probably going to buy this bike. My harley dealership wont even service my bike any longer, because its a 2002! Well then I will go elsewhere and why not do a massive upgrade. Best thing about harley is the size of the after market. You can do so much to them' and the parts are 1/2 what BWM parts are' but with BMW you don't need much maybe just a better radio. I just need to adjust to those mid controls!
