    Conceptually, I actually like the idea behind this film. A lost member of the Sawyer family returns and discovers her heritage and is forced to side with her giant chainsaw-wielding cannibal cousin to survive a lynch mob who wants to string her up just because of who her parents were. And I don't see a problem with showing more of the sympathetic human side of Leatherface. James himself said in the first film's kill count that Leatherface was more human than the likes of Michael and Jason. That's what makes him interesting. The problem is its execution.

    • @Xehanort10
      @Xehanort10 Před 3 lety +96

      The original showed sympathetic elements to Leatherface with him getting scared by Sally's friends coming into the Sawyer house and showing how badly his family treats him. The problem with this film is that it portrays him as a full on good guy despite the fact that he's killing innocent people and portrays his family being killed as a bad thing even though they were cannibalistic serial killers who'd have gone on killing and eating people if they hadn't been killed so the Sawyers deserved to die.

    • @thatcreepyberdinthecorner1097
      @thatcreepyberdinthecorner1097 Před 3 lety +71

      I don’t think a sympathetic Leatherface could ever work. His whole thing is wearing other people’s faces. In the first movie it wasn’t a home invasion, the people who walked into his house needed some help if I remember correctly, and even when they run away he pulls them back into the house then tortures, butchers, and eats them. Being mentally Ill doesn’t suddenly make you sympathetic, and yes he’s pushed around by his family, but they push everyone around. And the oldest brother is kinda less evil since he’s not actually killing anyone, while Leatherface puts people on hooks and lets them bleed out. I will never understand why people feel bad for someone who wears other people’s faces.

In the first movie, he can't talk which is why he makes those "pig snorts" and gestures a lot to communicate. After the attack, he literally runs through the house making crying noises because he doesn't understand what is happening. Same thing in the dinner scene - while his brothers are laughing and mocking Sally, he either tries to take care of the grandpa instead of leans into her with curiosity (though he also screams with her at the start).
      He has the mental capabilities of a toddler (which is why a 6'5+/- man who can carry a grown ass woman with one hand literally cowers in fear in front of his older brother), said by the creator themselves, and he is being abused by his family and forced to do dirty work for them.
      In the real-life, if he was born into a normal family. he would be put with a caretaker for the rest of his life because people with his developmental issues can't take care of themselves.
      He was born in a family where doing things from human skin is normal, and he doesn't have the mental capacity to think for himself. The cook brother is not only able to function on an adult level but actually has a life outside the house. He had a chance to see people that were different than his family. Leatherface didn't. Also, the cook brother is the one who got Sally back to the house and is the one who abuses his mentally disabled brother. He could just let her go, he didn't. Whenever he actually deals the blows doesn't matter in this care.

      The movies not THAT bad. Aside from some awful 3D effects and the fact that a baby in 1974 is only in her 20’s in 2013, this was a better sequel than 3 or 4, and the franchise was finally getting some continuity with the prequel “Leatherface”. At least we didn’t get some half assed remake of the original like every other sequel, and they actually attempted to do a little world building. I’m not going to complain about the characters because honestly their only job is to be body count, and no franchise is worse at killing random people for no reason than Friday the 13th.
