I made an animatic for this before with the theme being Dear Evan Hansen, and now I decided to revisit it with my current hyperfixation, which happened to be Homestuck lol. John is a very dear character to me. I kin him, along with Karkat(though I'm more Karkat than John), and his story really stuck to me. I know a lot of people don't like the epilogues, but it was by reading through the epilogues that I realized, hey, John and I are more similar than I thought.
I have dad issues that I won't talk about in the description of a CZcams video. I tend to project that onto John a lot, since he did lose his Dad somewhere in the story. And then the thing abiut his depression which was showcased in the epilogues- I don't know, it just hit me. It hit me harder than when I found out I kinned that asshole Karkat.
But yeah, I'll stop rambling now. Long story short, John is precious to me. Just wanted to share that.

does anyone notice how when he teleports away it seems to go back in time? Jade was godtier. Rose was in the outfit she had on before scratch. Dave was wearing a pair of Bro's glasses. Just thought I would mention that.

Oh god. I kinda loved how John couldn't make people go away. As much as John's a great friend and a great leader, he doesn't do very well with emotions since he bottles it all up. This was really good! Thank you, I cried
I never really understood that John played any sort of leader role, so I'm a bit confused, as much as John was one of the most important players of suburb I always saw Rose as the leader of the beta kids session, or is that a reference to the epilogs? (I'm not saying that you are wrong or anithing, I think karkat said something about it but idk)

"Everyone ignores me, everyone steals." I think it goes well with Rose; Among the Beta Kids, she seems to be the least liked by people. Of course she has popularity like the others, but her fame itself is reasonably less positive: She is intellectual and treats certain situations with sarcasm, some people think she has a grand ego and feels superior just because 'she reads a lot' ; She has a strong personality, it's easier to deal with John, Dave and Jade than with Rose. People see her talking and roll their eyes, ignore the important monologues she makes, I sure hated reading Rose's parts, and... It hurts. She do have feelings!

I actually have a friend irl A LOT like Rose - sarcasm and knitting and all. I’m happy I have that friend, because knowing them made it easy to know and understand Rose - I understand your view completely!!
on my first reading rose was honestly my all time favorite beta kid, while the others only grew on me near the end. it's sad to see people dont like her as much as the others

Looking down upon the concrete meters below him, faded and cracked, crevices from weathering compensated with small weeds and dandelions filling them up. John took a deep breath. There was no going back now, he'd had the opportunity to save Jade and Rose, but failed to change the fates of the former, now deceased. *Pathetic,* he thought. He had two chances- what gave him the right to live? He was the one who drove them over, probably. He was too selfish, too ignorant. Ignnoring the metal barring, he hopped over, now only a thin line of concrete keeping him from meeting his demise. Putting his foot outwards, he held his breath, and released his grip from the railing.

they were 13 i- ARGHHH. the fact that john and karkat had to grow up, just to watch all of their friends die, is so surreal and heartbreaking. john especially feels like it's his fault for starting literally all of this- it was his birthday, his game, his friends. in reality, sburb is a ticking timebomb (quite literally) centered around ending the universe. it wasn't these kids fault, and they didn't start it either- but they don't KNOW that. the only ones that do are prince and time players (minus dave) so dirk's anime supervillian arc is even harder to watch because dirk KNOWS everything he does doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of the scratch. the kids have no idea that nothing they do will change things, so they try their damnedest to make their session successful. what really sticks out to me is dave's part, where john is BREAKING because he now has god tiered and knows how broken dave feels. dave in the midst of being abused by his brother, something he can't control and john, in a metaphorical sense, feels like he's being abused by the session. this entire animatic is horrifying to think about, because in john's mind, he knows saving his friends doesn't matter. they're all going to die, and get hurt and be traumatized- but even so, he knows about rosemary and davekat. he knows that jade will eventually grow to love herself and accept who she is, and he just wants everyone to live for that.
SORRY FOR THE MINI THEORY RANT HAHA! this is a fantastic animatic and really showcases how amazing these characters can be to analyze! thanks for being a god mushie
Don't forget that John being Godtier *also* means, that he already died once. It always seemed one of the most fucked up things in this story to me, that these literal children had to walk more or less knowingly into their own death to be reborn as Godtier. That isn't healthy in the least.
And also it means that he is urging his friends here not to die, fully knowing, that very soon he'll probably have to lead them to their death, even though it's only so that they'll achieve Godtier. Saving them only so that they can die again.
And last, but not least - he has the Retcon-Powers. Which means, that he made a trip into one of the spirit bubbles.And that he'll probably know that every single one of them who dies, every single one he couldn't save, in any timeline, won't even get their rest, won't be reborn, and just aimlessly wander around as a spirit. It's really unpleasant for poor John.

I _should_ be happy about that, of course, 'cause I don't _want_ John to commit self deletion, but I also can't imagine jumping from a great height and then immediately coming back to life would be a pleasant experience...

But jeez, this animatic really does hit hard!!! This does as well as a job explaining John's character as well as your "I'm still here" animatic for Karkat, did with his. Which would be very well!! This shows *exactly* what Egbert must've felt like, when trying to help out his friends. Whether it be during the comic, or the Epilogue. John always was trying to be there for his friends more than anything, but as you clearly show Mushie..he can't. And that's something that he always struggled with, both in a doomed timeline and one that he currently resided in. It's clearly taken it's toll on him. Since he's been through it all, and he's basically the only one who remembers it, as well as affected most by it. John is indeed this precious figure, since all he wanted in life was to help. And there are so many examples in which it backfired, that I'm Surprised he kept it going for so long. Like jeez he's as tragic of a character as he is relatable. And your animatic did a great job of reminding us this.
Man, John really did need all the help he could get, even if he'd disagree and think otherwise. :(

and also when john finally breaks down,, its honestly heartbreaking and the pause bits are so much more significant because it’s like when johns heart stopped for a second when he was yelling at dave not to do it : c
it really breaks my heart because both of them are so VULNERABLE and i am in TEARS, daves mask of neutrality under bros shades and johns anger melting away into a sincere wish to make all of his friends’s problems go away just sends me Dx!!!!!!

This would've been a INFINITELY better way for the retcon to happen, if John was aware of everybody dying, if he knew what was going on but kept getting teleported away before he could help, the retcon would've been WAAAAAAAAAY cooler. Having him racing against all odds to save himself and his friends would've been great
I like how in some scenes the art style shift from them looking like kids to them looking older... kinda reminds us that theyre still kids yknow

Honestly i’ve seen many different takes on this song but this, this is a masterpiece. This has to be my favorite one. The way John and the rest of all the other characters look. 👌
God, I loved your take on this song. It gave off such a deep emotion that I felt like I was in just as much pain as the main character... don’t know if that’s weird or not, but either way I was moved.
