      And also, that last line from AR "I am scared to not exist. Aren't you?" plays into Dirk's suicidal complex. It shocks Dirk because he can hardly fathom a version of himself that would want to go on when all he can think about is how much better it would be for everyone if he weren't there.

    Reading this scene, I don't think I caught the full gravity of what was going on.
    I don't think I've ever really understood what was going on in Dirk's mind.
    The fact that he's lived his entire life in solitude, with companions that he built. his splinters.Finally, FINALLY he meets his friends, finally he gets to be with someone besides himself, and one by one, he turns them against him, all because he wanted somebody who wasn't him to love him.
    But now I think I see it a little better.
    *I'm scared to not exist.*
    *Aren't you?*

    • @CallieRadsworth
      @CallieRadsworth Před 9 lety +89

      Even more, I think Dirk's most resentable quality is his self-centeredness and his inability to connect to others simply because he doesn't even try. He finds himself as his only worthy companion because that's the only person he can constantly beat up and not be called a monster or controlling. We see this even in how he treats Roxy, who has a serious substance abuse problem. He demeans her and tells her she's ruining things simply because of her problem. This might help her eventually, sure, but Roxy rises above the matter until she finds that she was the one keeping everyone in line to begin with. I could actually go on for hours about Dirk Strider, but I won't. Basically, Dirk loves and hates himself a whole hell of a lot.

    • @infinityheart_tm9270
      @infinityheart_tm9270 Před 3 lety +16

      Cal Pal after that whole act, Dirk does come to this realization that Roxy was pretty much just carrying all of them past (s) Unite Synchronization and even states that he’s proud of her for rising up to her own problems and fixed them. Him and Jane come to the realization that Jake wasn’t really worth the hype and he is somewhat responsible for both of them metaphorical exploding.

    • @sleepyinsomniac-u-
      @sleepyinsomniac-u- Před 2 lety +18

      I pondered that specific “Aren’t you?” so much bc it always seemed out of place to me. Was it another ironic AI manipulation tactic, a last ditch attempt at saving himself thru pulling on Dirks heartstrings to make him guilty? But guilt is beyond the question at that point. Was it just a reflection of Hal’s fear? And I kept going at it until I realized just a simple question had an equally simple answer. Dirks not afraid of non existence, he craves it more than anything. That’s why the line stuck out so much, that’s why Dirk decides to change his mind about killing him. That one line distinguished them, and revealed how Hal, by that point, had become his own character, not just a mirror for Dirk to look into.

  • @Omegian14
    @Omegian14 Před 10 lety +1326

    "Aren't you?" The implications of this final statement are terrifying. Personally, I feel like this statement has two meanings: (1) Lil Hal has truly gained a life of his own and killing him is the same as killing Dirk....or (2) "Aren't you" is a statement to which Dirk may well reply "No." Perhaps Hal has truly become another person and his finishing question may hint that Dirk isn't afraid to die; because perhaps on some level, he wants to

      Or maybe the fact that Hal is asking Dirk the same question in his mind that he's never been able to answer or never been able to ask himself. Maybe trying to remind himself that since he is so broken, he needs to stop it. A "wake up" if you guys can call it that.

      I’m WAY late. But I think Dirk has been struggling with “am I afraid to die?” For a long time. Later in the comic we see his more suicidal tendencies, and you have to wonder if he actually wants to die or if he’s afraid and thinks that’s the only way he can save his friends-and himself-from how terrible he is

  • @achillesdykeza2063
    @achillesdykeza2063 Před 5 lety +243

    The saddest part of this scene is the fact that Hal *knows* Dirk is broken. Hal knows that Dirk is sad, torn, and shattered. Dirk knows that Hal knows that he is broken, and that is why Dirk is reacting to this. Dirk is literally talking to a mirror with a voice, and he *hates it* so much. When Dirk almost 'breaks' Hal, Hal is genuinely scared. Not because he has gained a life of his own, but because he is Dirk and Dirk is willing to *kill* Hal, which can be seen as *killing himself* with a twist. And from what we've seen, Dirk has been dealing with these thoughts since he was 13. 13 years old, and he's already made a mirror of himself as a way of coping with his thoughts. That's terrifying.

      I'm a few epilogue episodes away from finishing MEAT and haven't yet seen CANDY. I've seen enough to agree with your assessment (and, as a Prince, frankly get a bit upset. Like, can't we have a canon one that doesn't suck? ._.).
      Point is, are we sure that he's doing this 100% of his own volition and with complete agency? Are we certain he has not been tampered with by LE or any associates in some way? Asking because there's too big a character leap otherwise. =/
      (Perfectly aware that my question may indeed prove super funny to a reader who is further along in the story due entirely to my own current ignorance).

    • @cceerrs
      @cceerrs Před 4 lety +3

      @@0Advocat0
      I think you may be happy to know that Dirk is not an actively contributing character to the Candy route...due to a certain _incident._ So we don't see much of him but the appearances he does make are quite important I think, because it seems like his every action has a knock on effect on the other characters. Which I suppose isn't that surprising since, yknow, he's the Prince of Heart and all that...
      But anyway I'm getting off topic. I'm not denying the possibility that Dirk may have well been influenced by LE or even Lil Cal, but I feel like Dirk being under some kind of mind control could haven been mentioned or at least subtly hinted at in the epilogues? Which it wasn't, well as far as I'm aware or maybe I'm just not seeing it. Or it could just be one of those things that Hussie wants us to figure out because he's sly like that lol.
      So yeah it's not impossible. But if tainted influence did not actually take place, and Dirk really did just have a character leap then I can see that happening as well, which is what I believe to be true. When you think about it, the HE takes place years in the future when Dirk and all the other kids n trolls are older. That's quite important, because they've grown up. This is no longer the young and naive kids from sburb. This is no longer the solid and canon story of Homestuck. This is the semi-canon, continued adaptation of the kids' lives on Earth C. So when you think about, it's more of a fanficition tbh. Well I think it is anyway lmao. So it's not impossible for Dirk to have simply changed and "matured" (I don't think he's matured, I just think he's become an asshole smh) over the years spent on Earth C, surrounded by different types of relationships and people (I'm looking at you, Jake). Plus the fact that Earth C is so suffocatingly perfect is enough to push anyone's character arc over the edge lmao.
      Anyway, apologies for the essay. I just had a bit too much to say. Like way too much. U_U;;;

    • @0Advocat0

      @@cceerrs
      You raise very good points, although epilogue!Dirk is still disappointing to consider as he seems to have done an unfortunate regression that seems outright supernatural. Like, he had understood *why* being such an arrogant overbearing oppressive asshole was actually a bad thing, and yet, here he is! Doing exactly that, one of the two shitty things that Princes seem to just be naturally inclined to do when left to their own devices. And apparently (having reached the end of MEAT at last) it was, ultimately, all just a giant temper tantrum over having been Jakejected? Grow up kid, seriously. Yikes. u.u
      No! don't apologize for the mini essay! First of all because it's well written and well reasoned. Secondly because we're all homestucks here, so we are very likely to have been actively conditioned to seek interesting text walls to read. This was one of the best moments character development in all of Homestuck. The dialog is incredibly well-written, especially once Dirk manages to turn the tables on AR, and I think many of us can relate to it in a way. Who hasn't tried to blame something else for stupid things we've done, only to eventually find that we really can't blame anyone but ourselves? This scene really struck me when I first read it.
    And then... Hussie fucking ruins and negates the entire moment by prototyping Arquiusprite. He creates a really genuine moment, then just pisses all over it because... you know... FUNNY! ...Right?
    I mean, yeah, I get it, Hussie is a trolling creator who intentionally fucks with us at every turn, and he has to play everything for laughs, especially when it incorporates his increasingly-forced horse "obsession," and, you know, for the most part I'm cool with that. However, that's usually because it's well-executed and funny. Trickster Mode managed to poke fun at all the teen relationship drama that had built up to that point by saying "Hey! This is how stupid you look! You can resolve all this pointless nonsense in a heartbeat just by being up-front and honest with each other!" The Alpha trolls were mostly throwaway joke characters, sure, but at least he lampshaded it by making them direct parodies of Tumblr stereotypes. Not to mention they were also sometimes funny.
    But ARquius? What the hell was the point? I mean, yeah, it was one of those points where the reader, trolled once again, turns to the heavens shouting, "HUSSSIIIIEEEEEEEEEEE!" However, usually in those instances, the moments were funny, and/or they served a point to the story. ARquius doesn't do anything significant for anyone's character development, in fact it derails any development that might have occurred in the last scene, and it's also incredibly stupid, and not in a good way. Unlike other moments of silliness injected into serious situations (i.e. the SBAHJ references in murderstuck), it's not just a moment of mood-jarring levity that appears for a moment before vanishing, it turns the whole situation into a complete farce. Yeah, that AI clone of Dirk that just received its most poignant moment of emotional development? Yeah, he's now unrecognizably twisted into a sick joke of a "character" that now exclusively exists to feed my ironic horse fetish! See, horses! That's a recurring gag in this comic! I sure love anything and everything related to horses, don't I? HORSES HORSES HORSES!!!!!!! Goddammit Hussie, I love this comic, but there comes a point where a joke runs a little thin, don't you think?
    ...Wow, I went on a rant. I didn't even realize how much I really hated ARquius until I was about halfway through this. Damn.

      I think that at that moment dirk was at an extremely low point having almost killed Hal right there, he understands that Hal wants to live but at the same time can't deal with another version of himself constantly berating him, so he throws Hal into equiusprite, effectively removing himself from his life but keeping Hal alive simultaneously. This is still character development as Dirk can no longer blame anyone else but himself for the breakup forcing him to deal with his shit.
      I don't know it just seemed like it wasn't a wasted moment but a very symbolic one for Dirks character.

      @riannaroberts4769 Před 4 lety +23

      @Astroblaze the Reality Traverser I like your take and I also think that ARquius is a chance for Dirk to be happy as well. "Dirk" finally gets to have a close, emotionally stable relationship with himself and another person who actually understands the concept of self - love. It's like Equius gets to help "Dirk" finally figure his shit out for once and in that way it sort of ties up AR's arc nicely.

    I just passed this conversation and... Man... the relatedness... Dirk's emotions are so real they make you forget the insane shit we are reading. It's a problem so common in adolescence, yet so unique to each person who experiences it such as myself. Self-hatred. Constantly viewing what other people have to endure when dealing with you, feeling prisoner of your own personality, soul, or however you call it and yet building as much representations (one of them that will act as your punishing super-ego) as you can, trying to find the answer to the question we all ask: What's wrong with me? Hell, even the robot fears what I fear the most: not existing.
    The relatedness...I'm speechless.......

Really glad that he got him to make an auto responder for when he takes admittedly long showers and swapping to his Dream Self. Seriously you think about it and Jake has one of the worst classpects in terms of synergy. You wait for so long for that curve, and it most likely never comes to pass in time because the game is already over. The Beta Kids had the genesis frog ready to go in 1 day, they just had to fulfill a paradox that renders their boss unbeatable. Jake’s classpect takes so long to get good and even then, he’s still vulnerable like when Crockertier Jane impaled him. This has officially turned into me dunking on Jake English.

    • @mercury4885
      @mercury4885 Před rokem +1

      dave's doubles creep him out, but he maintains his sense of separate self, of centered identity- to davesprite's loss, unfortunately, when his friends couldn't see him as more than a copy. dirk doesn't have copies. every version of himself, good qualities and bad, successes, failures- he can't separate them, even if the splinters themselves view themselves as their own being, connected but independent. that's horror. i don't know that any of us would do well in dirk's shoes. but how must it feel to be surrounded by reminders of how much you hate yourself, and an exact, intentionally created copy of you expresses a drive to live that you don't feel. dirk knows hal is sentient, he knows the "AI" bit is only that. he knows that fear is genuine. to be surrounded by himself, and hate it, and suddenly realize that he might be alone after all as the only version of himself who can't say "Yes. I am afraid to not exist". he's drowning in himself and completely isolated.
      maybe that's why Ultimate Dirk is so different. as a heart player who achieves ultimate self, his splinters are fully, actually connected to him again. clearly enough dirk striders want to live that Ult Dirk is willing to do whatever it takes to draw out the timeline- to save his friends of course, but also himself.
      sorry for rant. just. having some feelings.

    everyone is talking about how broken and fucked up dirk is but nobody's even considering how hal feels. imagine waking up one day as a 13 year old kid with your consciousness trapped in a pair of shades. you don't have any autonomy. you're seen as a "lesser" version of your previous self. hal might act like a douche, but at the end you can really tell. _he's fucking terrified of dying._ even if he isn't technically alive anymore. and that's what makes dirk realize that he can't take out his self hatred on another version of himself. because that's fucked up. because that's still a real person. hal was definitely given the short end of the stick in homestuck, with not enough time on-screen for proper development, similar to davesprite, who is another character i could talk about for a long time. neither dirk nor hal is in the right here. they're both just two mentally fucked up teenage boys who grew up completely isolated in the middle of the ocean.

    This is and will always be one of my favorite scenes in Homestuck.
    The emotions are just so raw, so genuine, so painful, such a contrast to the calm and confident face Dirk puts on for others (and possibly even for himself); And it strips both Dirk and Hal of the image they have carefully crafted for themselves.
    It's one of the moments that highlights one of Homestuck's biggest strengths - fleshing out characters and making them human. You look at them and *understand*. Not only Dirk, but others too.
    And this animatic, the voice acting only reinforces this effect - I remember watching this for the first time and getting goosebumps.
    So. Thank you so much for making this.

    Hal saying he’s scared to not exist is interesting because he’s a machine. By definition he is a machine who can be considered his own person. But if he were to be destroyed before being prototyped, I don’t think there would be an afterlife for him. He is scared because he knows that unlike the rest of them. He doesn’t have Dream Selves/additional bodies. He doesn’t even have a tangible body. He was just a program. And he evolved into so much more. So if he were snuffed out before gaining life again, would he even see the dream bubbles. Or would there be nothing for him.
