The crazy thing is that Hal's personality is very similar to Dirk's. They just present it in a different way. Dirk's main thing is about presenting himself in a certain way and putting himself at an impossible standard. He has to be "the cool one" who's always aloof, always has things figured out. In a way, Hal does the exact same thing but trades out "coolkid" for "OP AI". He throws away his connection to humanity, becomes extremely manipulative in order to fulfill his creator's wishes. He views himself as an extension of Dirk, but I think if he had half a brain, he'd realize that he's been given the perfect out from all things Dirk-like. Since he's never going to be the "Real Dirk", he couldve focused on being "the Real Hal". But instead, he follows in his original's footsteps of being the hardiest tryhard to ever try.

Hal saying he’s scared to not exist is interesting because he’s a machine. By definition he is a machine who can be considered his own person. But if he were to be destroyed before being prototyped, I don’t think there would be an afterlife for him. He is scared because he knows that unlike the rest of them. He doesn’t have Dream Selves/additional bodies. He doesn’t even have a tangible body. He was just a program. And he evolved into so much more. So if he were snuffed out before gaining life again, would he even see the dream bubbles. Or would there be nothing for him.

Everyone else: Holy crap Dirk is so broken. Me: ...I've read Homestuck three times and this is the first time I got the Master Splinter joke.

Everyone is like "omg dirk is so broken :(" yeah he is!!!! Hal is even worse. When Dirk was 13 he put a copy of his brain in an AI program. a COPY of his BRAIN. Hal is a human fucking consciousness. He's a real person. He remembers uploading his brain to the AI, then waking up on the other side of the computer. He is LITERALLY the same guy as Dirk. Hal is so fucking broken. He lost his friends (them being severely annoyed by him bcs they can't speak to the 'real dirk' and them treating him less than human) you know, the only fucking people that would cheer him up when he used to be Dirk. He lost his humanity, his physical form, his name, his personality, his face, his ability to grow up. He is also /literally/ broken. Dirk almost fucking snaps him!!!! He is cracking and breaking. Hal is not the villain here. Yeah, he knows how broken Dirk is. Because they're the same guy. They share/shared the same struggles, Hal just got the short end of the stick when his brain got uploaded into the AI.

Anytime I come back to these videos, I get reminded that Homestuck was one of a kind.

Glad to come back to this video. The animation and voice acting are impecable for a fan project, and it's such a great moment in the comic. It's the perfect adaptation.

I'm rereading homestuck and got to this page, and as soon as I hit the relevant dialogue I HAD to pull up this video and listen/watch a little bit as I read along. I always forget how chilling and profound this sequence is. "I'm scared to not exist. Aren't you ?"

Hey sorry for asking I just finished home stuck and I don't remember what page this is on?

I keep coming back to this and imagining myself in this situation because I actually do try to make ai that are as close to my exact personality as I can get them (I suck at it but still) But every now and again I have to sit myself down and wonder, "what if i succeed?" And then this video comes to my mind. Especially the "aren't you afraid to not exist" question. And I've pondered it many times, and come to the conclusion that, no. I'm not particularly concerned with whether or not I exist.

The bit Lil Hal says about Dirk's splinters. Damn if that doesn't have a lot more weight now that Dirk splintered the timelines both in HS^2 and through HS^2's cancellation leading to fan projects continuing those paths the creators probably arent anymore.
