You're 💯 right about that. I have yet to use pocket hole jig in the last 7 years since I got back into woodworking again finally after my youth. I don't hate then or think they aren't useful to people. I just personally have preferred more traditional joinery.
Wow talk about timing! I literally stopped on my way home from work and bought that very same dado set with the intentions of making box joints. Get home, turn on CZcams and this video comes up! Hadn’t even got the dado set out of the bag! Lol
One of the fun parts of woodworking is when you decide to up your game and actually go for it. Props dude! Some people do not understand but those that do this for income totally understand. I do
I'm new to your channel and it is very educational and entertaining. Love that you listen to audiobooks. I happen to be a narrator. Thanks for supporting the industry.
Your excitement upon learning and accomplishing a new technique reminds me of myself LOL I was self-taught in a time when woodworking females were not very common, so when I figured out something new it always made me feel really giddy! Nothing better than woodworking is there?!
Men love that smile on your face when you showed that completed third box joint I could just see the joy of completing it and it was looking so good keep up the good work
Could you please make a detailed video on how to make a frame start to finish with the plywood inlay using a dado blade please! I make farmhouse signs and have been very interested in this process as it would speed up my production time. But there isn't many videos on it using a dado blade. I currently either nail frame directly into or onto the plywood or I router my frames so the plywood sits inside the frame and the router takes a good bit of time because 2 sides aren't routered completely through so you don't see the cut when looking at the sides of the frame.... I hope I'm making sense haha. I love how you go into such detail and really break down the processes step by step in your videos and make it so much easier to understand and follow along. It would be EXTREMELY appreciated! Thank you so much!
Watched and liked this video when it came out. Watched it this morning because: last week I picked up a Delta T2 ("stole" it for $341at Lowe's sale), ordered some inserts (due in today), and yesterday morning my brother-in-law gifted me a Diablo dado stack! He's been a woodworker for years longer than me and I get his "hand me downs" when he upgrades! :)
Hey Matt New to your channel & i love it! Straight to the point without all the BS, great info & projects! Ive framed about 30 years now & never done much actual wood working. Im setting up a small shop area where my son (17) & i can do projects together, you've been a great inspiration. Thank you. PS: im 50 now & its always exciting to get new tools😁
Now you're cooking with gravy. Welcome to the addiction I call Dado stacks. Pocket holes won't be the same for you again. Congrats Matt, on everything.
I've had that same dado set for over 15 years and have been actively using it for a month. That's because the thought of using it scared the heck out of me. The big concern was getting a zero-clearance insert (ZCI) for my table saw. There weren't any. After watching a video or two on the internet, I started making my own. I used 1/4" Baltic Birch and batched out around 10 of them (1/4" because that was the depth of my ZCI). A game changer!. I was finally was able to build a bench for my deck that used A LOT OF DADOS . That had a 10 degree bevels on everything. The design said it was a 'simple weekend project'. They lied and a lot of 2" x 6"s died. Their sacrifice was not in vain and I can now use a a dado set reasonably well.
I bought that same dado set this week, first dado set I’ve ever had at 62yo! Following the directions I stacked the recommended pieces on the arbor and proceeded to cut a 1/2” dado. The result was that the 1/2” oak I was experimenting with wouldn’t quite fit in the groove! My interests include a home machine shop in which I use a digital caliper a lot, but never in woodworking! But I used it to measure the oak and the groove, the oak turning out .012” wider than the groove. Looking through the included shims I was happy to find a .012” shim (they’re all stamped in inch and metric if you look close!), and installed it between the outside blade and the first chipper. Suffice it to say that it fit like a glove!
I bought this same Freud dado set about a year ago and it has allowed me to tackle a lot of projects I probably wouldn't have even tried otherwise. I need to invest in one of those digital calipers - getting that perfect fit without one is just way too much trial and error. Thanks for the video! -Doug
I purchased a wobble dado blade several years ago, and used it many times. I ran across a stack dado on eBay a while back and bought it for next to nothing. The seller said he only used it once, and it looked like it. The stack takes a little longer to set up, but the results are so much better! I've never made box joints, but after watching this, I think I'll give it a try!
I don't know why, but I can NEVER get to the end of your video to hit like. You always say something, or do something that earns it before it gets there. Another great video, thanks.
I’m so glad you made this video, I been wanting 1 for a while, but just wasn’t sure what brand, the Freud router bits I have bought are top notch, so I know their dado stack will be.... thank you so much
It’s nice adding additional techniques to your Arsenal! Dato stacks are awesome! Done right it helps keeping things square! And the finger joints look cool and add structural support!! Your stove covers will have an additional dimension added if you make them with finger joints!!
Great video Boss Hog so much sentimental in this one. Also thanks for linking the box blade, been looking for one for a minute now. CMT couldn’t really find the one I needed. Long live the dado stack. Poor pocket holes 🕳 poor poor pocket holes 🕳
I know its been a year since it's been uploaded. But, i have watched you for quite a few years now (when i started woodworking). I'm so happy to see you continually level up your skill set and help shed light on subjects like yhis. Thanks for being an inspiration my guy!
I just found your channel last night. I am a rank amateur, and I've been eyeballing some Dado stacks on Amazon and at Lowe's because I've seen other videos about how great they are. I liked your video best because you didn't make me feel like an idiot for not knowing things. I laughed out loud when you went to black and white and mentioned the forbidden "PH" words.....(pocket holes). I'm waiting for my pocket hole jig to arrive early next week for my very first project. I also bought myself a beautiful commercial Delta table saw, a Dewalt 12-in 15 Amps Dual Bevel Sliding Compound Corded Miter Saw, a new grinder, a new drill press, various clamps, and a bunch of hardware. I have a 2,000 sq. ft. garage, so space isn't an issue, and now I want to learn using the best tools I can afford. After watching your video, I'm going to go ahead and put in an order for a Dado stack and give it a go. Experimenting is good but current lumber prices demand that I hone my skills quickly and not waste anything. You have inspired me by showing the simplicity and versatility of the Dado method of joinery and I think I'm hooked. Now I'll need to justify to my wife why I spent a bunch more money on "toys." LOL Thanks again! I definitely am subscribing and am in the process of perusing your other videos even as I type. Have an awesome weekend and thanks again!!
I'm super glad you made this video. I think it will be very helpful to see someone using the dado blades who is new to them and new to the different kind of cuts and joints they can create . Sometimes people who have been doing something for years get in a flow and it doesn't occur to them to show newbies the "obvious" things. Oh, Steve over at Woodworking for Mere Mortals recently posted a tutorial for how to make a zero clearance insert for the table saw. 😁
You have a flush trim router. Why not grab a piece of scrap, rough out the table saw insert with your jig saw, set it on top of your existing insert and run around it with the flush trim bit? Add 4 height adjustment screws on the bottom to flush it to the table top. I love making box joints and I have really screwed up a lot of good wood to prove it. lol
Bought a Harbor Freight Dado stack years ago for creating a 1/4" grove in drawer sides. I don't think I've ever used any of the chipper blades. Great for large runs for doing bulk drawer stock. Before buying a set make sure your arbor is long enough to accommodate the size of your dado stack you want to use. Many cheaper saws have shorter arbors so you can't use a dado stack on them. Once you get the stack correct. keep a sample for setting up your saw in the future and draw on it how you set up the stack to get the grove you wanted.
Love watching you learn and grow brother! Gives me something to look forward to, getting a dado stack in the future and growing my skill as well! God bless you brother!
I have been woodworking for over forty years. Much of that owning my own woodworking business. I love your videos. You made me laugh, because my first dado stack did have paper shims !!! Keep up the great work, and keep that great attitude.
Great video Matt! This channel is going places! Didn’t think you could make it any better than it already is but you prove me wrong with every upload. Good work!
I bought the 6" version of this Freud set, mainly because I did not trust the larger 8" on a less than 3 HP table saw when hogging out wide cuts and because I'm only going to use it for shallower cuts (1/4-3/4" max. ever). Get yourself a fractional inch dial caliper as well... no battery and they read down to 1/64s (even 1/128s if you read between the lines), on top of 1/100s. Super handy.
I know one of my small table saws won't take a dado stack on the shaft. I need to uncover and check out the other one to see if it will take it. Otherwise, you become my excuse for buying a new table saw as my Father's Day present, along with a dado stack set and a micrometer. Thanks Matt, and as always, I love to learn by watching you on your videos. Straight Grains my friend.

Chances are they are bare steel and subject to rust easily. I left mine in their plastic holder for about 6 months and when I went to use them they were stuck together with rust.
I love your new apron. Nice and clean. Gotta dirty it up or rub some glue on it. Haha. I'm so excited to see y'all grow into a viable youtube content provider. Thanks again for the videos.
I'm don't know if you do this already but since you do word working full time now, have you thought of using your skills and doing some mission trips? Maybe help teach locals how to do basic wood working. I'd love to donate money so you can take tools to them and show them how to use them if they don't already know how. I love your channel.
I bought a set recently, they aren't legal for sale in Europe and saws here aren't made to take them, fortunately my saw is about 30 years old and has a long arbour. I've used it a few times and live it even if it did take 3 months to come from the US
Dado stacks have their place. Always always use the proper insert when using stacks. You will find that they make a lot of saw dust so dust collection is important also. I run a 10” Delta Unisaw strictly with a dado stack only. Have a big 12” table saw for everything else. Recently got into the CNC game and now run cabinet parts and cutting dados’s and rabbits, pockets are extremely accurate. Things go together very easy and stay together with properly sized dados. Most plywoods have different thickness’s so measuring is important.I use mostly Russian Birch and it can vary .020” from lot to lot.
great as always i do not recall seeing you use a grrriper before maybe i just missed it, i have 2 and really like them it is a little nerving passing your hand over the blade with just plastic i make several practice passes to ensure clearance i also have one set up so the narrow green rubber is by the drop level plate and the other where the thicker green rubber is by the drop level plate if that makes any sense.
Amazon lost the first set I ordered. I ordered another set, This one is taking a week and a half to get here! Hope it comes this time! By the way, I also bought a WEN scroll saw. It is top rated and only cost $127. One HS technology teacher buys 8 every couple of years. They get very heavy use. Lots of times I need to cut curves. There are also countless projects you can make for the holidays using a scroll saw. They are perfect for seniors, kids, and moms who want to play with wood. Think signs, ornaments, wall art, curved table legs. and much more.
Ever notice how getting new tools to a woodworker is like a new toy that a kid really wants.😄
And that box joint is about 50,000x stronger than any pockethole joint. Excited to see you really put that dado stack to work.
👊🏻
You're 💯 right about that. I have yet to use pocket hole jig in the last 7 years since I got back into woodworking again finally after my youth. I don't hate then or think they aren't useful to people. I just personally have preferred more traditional joinery.

Your excitement upon learning and accomplishing a new technique reminds me of myself LOL I was self-taught in a time when woodworking females were not very common, so when I figured out something new it always made me feel really giddy! Nothing better than woodworking is there?!
Dados are a game changer. They make squaring things up very easy and the joints are almost bomb proof.
Men love that smile on your face when you showed that completed third box joint I could just see the joy of completing it and it was looking so good keep up the good work
na fam u ghey
Thanks Matt!!!!!! Same saw here. Now I know which dado blades to get!!!! You just opened up a whole new world!!!!! You are my Guinee pig!!!! LOL!!!

You can cnc you another plate with your new cnc router. Great video, like the edit. Hope mrs 731 is better.
That edit on "pocket holes" at the beginning quickly earned this video a like 😂

It's woodwork. Just go to Harboring Fright and grab a cheapo digital caliper---comes with a ginzu knife...LOL

I was that pumped when I got my Dado Stack. So fun to watch you so excited about getting out in the workshop
Matt just saying, inserts are too easy to make, give it a shot.👍
it would be as great video...Matt making zero clearance inserts.
Ive been needing a set for a while now I love using my chisel but nothing beats exact cuts💪🏿
I just picked up my first one. I got the same brand in 6 in.
Can't wait to use it.
Thanks for sharing.
Been wanting dado blade for a long time, you've convinced me! Thanks for the video on the cross cut sled. Great job!
Sweet Video. I look forward to following along with your series. Very excited about this.
Thank you
Great video Boss Hog so much sentimental in this one.

Always great information! Thanks Matt!

Great video. I’m a beginner woodworker so for me very informative. Good stuff. Thank you.
Told ya so...your uping your game...now store your pocket holes lol...you're gonna love where you're heading.
👊🏻
Great video can't wait till I upgrade my table saw!!
Build that zero clearance insert.might be a video. Excited to see what you’re channel has to come. It will be a blast to watch you /it grow.
👊
Love it! Take me for the ride and I'll follow in your footsteps when I get my new workshop!!!
👊
Definitely getting these when I get a table saw
Just remember that not every table saw is compatible with dado stacks.
Nice upgrade sir. Have fun 👊
Steppin' up your game big time ! That is very nice, my old saw says not to use more than a 1/2" dado stack so I haven't bothered with it.
👊🏻
That's my limit too, but it is still very useful.
Good work!
The next video may be even better? Put a lot of work into it.
Excellent presentation!
Thank you for this very informative video on "Dado Stacks."
You are the bro!

Get yourself a fractional inch dial caliper as well... no battery and they read down to 1/64s (even 1/128s if you read between the lines), on top of 1/100s. Super handy.
Those are cool!! I use an old wobble dado blade.
Great video and I agree, great tool
Can’t wait to see your first build using it.
Glad to see your new toy Matt. I know you must be excited about the possibilities.
Those thick shims the black ones should always be used between the outside blades and chippers.
Lee Tendall makes Zero clearance inserts on Etsy I bought 3 of them and they are awesome got all 3 for $48.00. I use one for rip cuts 1 for thin kerf blade and my dado stack, I keep the standard insert for angled cuts,
Thank You for your videos… Dado is my next project to learn
i have been wanting one of these. i will order one. you talked me into it.
Perfect 👍🏻, funny 😄 Thank you 😊
👊 you have my attention!! Let's start these new methods
👊🏻
Nice apron! I just picked me one up too. It's a very handy tool to have in the shop.
Check out the dado stack here (affiliate): amzn.to/2RoYPPi
Don't mess around and get yourself dethroned....🤣
Great video...I've actually been thinking about a Dado set as well.
lol
That is the same dado stack I have and it works great!
That's awesome Matt to see you up your woodworking game.
Look at 3x3 custom for a jig that Tamar makes making mortises one of the best I've seen.
MATT you the man love your video and how you explain everything!! Just great info.. thanks you once again….
I hate pocket holes! And now you will too! 😂Congrats Danielson! You now have balance in the art of woodworking!!!😂😂
If I hit the subscribe button before I leave I won’t be a subscriber no more! I really like this content... Hitting the 👍 tho!

Thank you
congratulations on getting sponsors👊
Thank you 👊🏻
So awesome seeing you grow skills and not stagnate on a single joinery technique. Wait till you start playing with Japanese pull saws.
I'm don't know if you do this already but since you do word working full time now, have you thought of using your skills and doing some mission trips? Maybe help teach locals how to do basic wood working. I'd love to donate money so you can take tools to them and show them how to use them if they don't already know how. I love your channel.
I need a table saw. And I need to learn how to use it. I'm in Michigan City, Indiana.

Love the video! God bless!
Excellent video as usual. Videos are getting better.
Thank you 🙏🏻. I’m trying. The next one coming is even better (I think)
Dado stacks are a must for the table saw. I don't buy new table saw inserts, I just make my own.
On my list of tools I need.
No p-p-p...no p-pock...I can’t even say it, Clamps! Say it ain’t so! 😂
lol
You keep getting me to buy stuff! Also, liking the apron.
lol 👊
Awesome!
I bought a set recently, they aren't legal for sale in Europe and saws here aren't made to take them, fortunately my saw is about 30 years old and has a long arbour. I've used it a few times and live it even if it did take 3 months to come from the US

You sold me on one. Going to buy the same set you have.
You might want to look into getting a dado gauge to help you get that perfect fit every time.
I've got one
Still the Pocket Hole King even if you don’t use them all the time...I’m sure Colonel Sanders ate grilled chicken sometimes!
