I set one of these up two years ago and ran into similar installation problems ... like you I eventually got it working. I use a flat HDTV antenna in my window and I can receive quite a surprising amount of stuff (FM of course, taxis, buses, airplanes, etc). Not bad for a cheap little device ... tons of fun.
Thanks for the vid, saved me lots of searching to get this thing working! BTW, the NOAA weather stations are great for setup, as they will repeat their exact freq and broadcast locations at the end of each recorded loop.

I`m just now starting to buy dongles, and I have a Noo Elec and a Radio Oddity RTL-SDR unit. this particular part of the electronics hobby is about 4 or 5 years old, but I just picked up on it. So far I have downloaded several sdr software suites but have no luck actually playing the radio. I think it may have been the zadig file being in the wrong directory. I`ll keep trying. I ordered from Amazon as well, but ended up with an older version nooelec NESDR Mini R820T. I does not support SDR# and I have had no luck picking up anything other than local FM. Used long wire, and 75mtr dipole. Guess it is broken. Going to watch some more reviews and likely get a better box.
I bought one of these and was able to do the aircraft tracking even with the included antenna and listen to FM radio. I know there has to be more to this gadget than this. I see there is some sort of Ham it up attachment and there must be plans for better antennas for the different frequencies. Can you point me to some more information on this unit? Thanks
hi jim, mny tks for your introduction. Just some infos from my side. Application is up and running on my win7 laptop, but some differences to your introduction. Laptop was not able to install windows driver via network after puting in the dongle was stopping the win7 process take the dirver CD how was delivered with the dongle and did the instllation process. DRIVER ONLY! In ZADIC the device was shown as BULK IN (interface0) and a second BULK IN (Interface1). Within ZADIC as I chosse the BULK interfaces the DRIVER window down shows RTL2838UHIDIR did the reinstall Everthings else works as you described it best regards Kurt, DL9FBF
Digital informations for digital radio in the FM Sideband? HA!!! WOW! This is so much better than what's going on here in europe… Over here they wanna shut down ALL FM Stations and completely exhange them for new digital standards.... while we already had 2 obsolete digital broadcast standards… DAB and DVB-T. Both being replaced only a few years later with a completely new standard, DAB+ and DVB-T2. DVB-T was only active for 13 years!! Now people can buy completely new receivers again. I wish i'd live in the US where Radio and broadcast culture is alive and well (especially on AM). Norway has already shut down analog FM radio countrywide… and just created gazillion tons of electronic garbage by rendering normal radios completely useless now.
yeah the tech trend is to put more data in a smaller space. take satellite, broadcast went from analog ( 1 tv service per transponder ) to DVB-S to DVB-S2, from QPSK, to 8PSK, now we have the transition from H.264 to H.265 ( HEVC ). at least the transition is more like a migration, slowly moving from one to another without just outright shutting down the previous. looks like in Europe they want to clear up the waste of bandwidth over the air. taking advantage of new tech, to make room for new services and/or additional throughput. These new approvals for services are causing problems, in the last few months, I have been having interference on the C-Band, either by WiMax, or new 5G services. these services are near or share the same frequencies as satellite downlink. still waiting for shipment on a spectrum analyzer. but been watching these videos on the smaller dongles, which I also ordered for personal hobby fun. eventually would like to get the HackRF unit,
RDS is not new in Europe. Way back in 1994 I rented a car in Germany and did a 5 thousand km road trip through Europe. I had digital FM information from the car's FM radio throughout the trip. Station name, lots of information and sometimes even news headlines were received.

Sure put the screws to people living out side of large cities. Now you have to go Satellite or your pretty much screwed for TV. I just gave up Off Air TV and use what ever Internet provides.
When trying to install the dongle I got all the problems you showed. Can’t understand why the dongle makers don’t send you instructions that can understand rather than none at all. I appreciate your vlog although some of what you described still left a little lost. But thanks any way.
So this doesn't work for me. Installed driver properly, it's in the dropdown. If i go to open SDR# it brings up the Airspy logo, then behind it pops up a windows installer. It just sits there and hovering a mouse over brings up the spinning wheel. No amount of compatibility settings or running as administrator will fix it. Couldn't find a fix on the airspy site either. Running windows 10 and up to date.
I tried for 20hours,,twenty..hours and it got power but nothing else. I suggest if you can change a transmission with a fork it you might have a chance,

I struggled getting this SRD setup working but have been able to proceed further with the info you display here. However, my log jam now is at the part where I click the setup wheel exposing RTL-SDR Controller then nothing is available for a device (E4000 is listed above the grayed out arrow to show devices and I have no action there) like you have. So I can go no further. I cant see where I've left anything out but mine is not working for me. Any clues? Thanks in advance.

This is great! Very clear and easy to understand. I managed to download Zadig. However even with OPTIONS and LIST ALL DEVICES, my dongle is showing up as Bulk-In, Interface (Interface 0) and Bulk-In, Interface (Interface 1)... so when I launch SDR, and click on the COG, the device is not listed. Any suggestions?
You might have to download the .Net Runtime to get it to open. If so, don't download the x64 thinking because you have a 64 bit system. Download the x86. You are welcome.
Just saying that is not hard at all to get up and going luckily I didn't have to do much lucky but I downloaded it opened and it worked now if I can just get it to do the same on my phone
Have you (or any other user) used the cheap ebay usb rtl-sdr bellow $10 with shipping, beside the expensive ones? If so, can you please let me know the difference? I am using a cheap one, and it is good, have no idea of these expensive brands. Thank you all.
I am using such a cheaper stick. I think they are pretty much ALL the same. The only difference is some cases are printed differently or have different plastic. I am actually quite happy with mine. Even thou I haven't added a special antenna to it yet. Mine looks like the one in the video. However the printing on the stick was different and my antenna had a simpler and thinner wire/rod screwed onto it. It even came with a little CD-R that had some TV software on it named "Blaze HDTV 6.0".
Expensive X3 Same as 10$ unit that come with cd software and driver for TV. If you wont to watch tv dont install the zadig driver it will brake the connection and you dont be able to serch tv station
+k6lsn The SDR dongle itself isn't much more than a A/D converter. All of the real work is done by the software running on the PC. SDR# does have memory capabilities, though I don't think it has scanning capabilities. I think there is a scanner mod you can download for it, but I haven't tried that out.

Does this dongle have esd (electrostatic) protection?,some of them dont have it & can prematurely die due to static electricity :( think its a diode positioned on the circuit board very close to the antenna socket?

The left hans display is different from yours and I can't find the dongle

Thank's Jim but you lost me with the command prompt. You typed two lines in, the last was the location of the batch file what was the first?
The first thing I typed in was a "CD" to the folder where the batch file is. The second thing I typed in was the name of the batch file to execute it.
I think that if you run the BAT file as administrator it will work, so you don't need the command prompt!

i think it may be due to the fact i am not using the same dongle you used but i have ordered one (seems hard to get in the uk?)

You need to install the drivers.
