    I am probably a little late to the plant helping party but here is my 2 cents worth...... For the established plants with yellowing leaves on the ends.... cut the stem about 1.5 inches below where the yellowish leaves are. Replant in another tank, they will grow roots. I am figuring the yellow leaves are simply because the total plants and moss have reached the point where the nutrients are getting used up faster than the plants demands for nutrients. You could add fertilizers.... or just keep it all trimmed back enough for the nutrients to stay balanced. The new plant was added in after the other plants, so had less nutrients available to start with which partially explains it's slow growth. The other part is new plants in new environment (or any time a rooted plant is up rooted and replanted) usually means about 6 weeks of adjustment for the plant to get established in a new environment and to get its systems all functional, especially root systems. Plants = patience. Keep testing the nitrates. Remember nitrates are good for plants so too much water changed can mean too much free fertilizer removed. I hope this helps

    I love my pogos, and guppy fry love it!
    Just pinch it off wherever you want. It will branch where you pinch it.
    You can float the trimmings and they’ll grow roots (they don’t have to be planted)
    Yellowing - needs more food. Easy green or a root tab if it’s planted would probably help. 🎉

    You have the right plant. Pogo was my first plant I purchased back a couple years ago when I started along with some java ferns. Pogo grows so crazy well, I've literally thrown away tons of these cuttings, move them to other tanks, and they actually do GREAT as a floating plant if interested for your guppy tanks once they are running. I get yellowing from time to time but it doesn't bother me. Either cut/pinch it off and it will grow back, or ignore it, your choice. I'm using undergravel filtration and have never found a need for root tabs since all the poop gets pulled down to the roots. That might be different for your tank. But this plant never seems to stop growing in my experience SOOOOO you never have to worry about how aggressive you are with giving it a haircut. How much your trim off is entirely dependent on what look you want for the tank. I love having plants (especially this one) that fish can swim through, but I also like lots of open area. But the important issue is it WILL grow back regardless of how much you cut back. Have fun!!

    Rock Wool is for rooting plants there is no fertilizer in it unless you add it. If you want to propigate trim the plant down halfway use the 1 inch rockwool cubes and put it back in the same tank till you start seeing roots then you can throw it in another tank, or if a tank has got fish in it just throw it in with them . If you use 1 inch rockwool get the same size hydroponics cups 1 inch.

    Easy green. Yellowing means not enough fertilizer. Trim some of those stems as u can find them and plant what would be the bottom of the trimmed piece and plant a bunch w a plant weight (but not too tight. Root tabs too. Ur lucky that is doing so well in the rock wool. Mine don’t until removed and planted.

  • @papagrande8374

    Easy Green with Easy Root Tabs are all you need. You might need to add a bit more of that large gravel substrate where you want to direct plant the larger pogestemon. The larger plant took off faster because it had established roots in the basket when it arrived. The second plant is still anchoring itself, it will catch up. The plant in the basket is exhausting the available nutrients and is still stuck in the basket, not the substrate. Thus it turns yellow. A bit longer light time will help there also once that is permanently planted. Should you go that route.
    I have plants in baskets in multiple tanks. They tend to peter out over time (can be many months or years) but they serve my purpose in tanks without substrates. I replace them as needed. I have “buckets” and other containers of plants and trimmings growing perpetually. Consider a dedicated plant nursery tank with the new setup. I wish I had that myself but every time I’ve tried, it turns into a stock tank. Thus the “buckets” and plastic tubs. No filters, heaters or lights. Just water and ambient light for the plants and trimmings. It’s a bit chaotic but I ALWAYS have replacement plants and moss of some type available when needed. So don’t be hatin’! 😄
    I have no first hand experience with that particular plant. You might already be able to divide it as well as trim it to any height or shape you want at this point. Judging from the size alone. I’m certain someone else will know specifics there.

    I take it out, take it out of the pot and break it up. You can spread it around. You can also trim the tops and replant if it's a stem plant

  • @Lumpydog
    @Lumpydog Před 5 měsíci +3

    Looks like most of your plants are water column feeders. I would trim back the big Pogo and replant trimmings in substrate or another tank. Then add liquid fertilizer like Easy Green. My two cents.

    Pogo grows like that for me in every tank regardless of substrate or fertilizers which i dont use my 180g angel tank i have to take about a 5g bucket full of it out every couple months just trim the stems and 2 new shoots will grow off in each spot basically i trim them high the first time then drop below the split each time after that an eventuality ever 6 months or so i rip them out and replant the nicest trimmings and just start the cycle over.

    I haven't had any luck with this plant, but I think I'll try again and leave it in the pot. I've done that before with dwarf sag (but it was out of me being lazy) from Keith and it quickly went wild and spread throughout the tank. I guess I should have taken the hint. Now if I could only grow water sprite...

    The yellowing of the leaves is a nutrient deficiency that will be helped by Easy Green fert. I dilute the Easy Green by 7 and use it daily. This works well when trying to correct deficiencies for wanting extra growth. The single stem should have a root tab. You can leave the pogo long or cut it back You can trim with clean household scissors or use ones made for the aquarium. If you save the cuttings you can plant them in another tank or leave then to grow floating. I'm glad to hear you're feeling better.

  • @nathanmcgrath9038
    @nathanmcgrath9038 Před 5 měsíci

    I think it looks like your doing pretty well Michael. If you're plants are yellowing a small amount of iron can really help with but not much try half as much as the bottle says. All the plants you have you can cut them back to about half and plant the top tips and they will start growing as well. But all in all looks to me that your tank is going well 👍

  • @blujeans9462
    @blujeans9462 Před 5 měsíci

    I think it looks great! If you like the jungle look, keep it - maybe just trim the top inch or so, so it doesn't grow out of the water or too close to the light. Trimming can be as much, or as little, as you like - is my take. Some folks like their tanks filled with plant-life - to mimic nature (fish - and fry - love it, too). Others prefer that their tank look like a work of art and spend time to trim each 'twig' to perfection. Either way, having plants is excellent - not only for looks - but keeps the water more stable. I'd say, keep doing what you are doing - for your tank, it works!

    The rock wool is holding on the nutrients from the water column, hence the better growth. The gravel is inert, so you need yo put the nutrients in. You can add any of the root tabs you have. Put the root tabs for the swords too. You can do that every month to every 3 months. Eventually the fish poop and mulm will add to your nutrients. You can trim the yellow parts off or add your liquid fertz once a week or every two weeks. Its most likely a lack of some nutrient. I love the bushiness of the Pogo. Keeping plants is not hard, you will be fine.

  • @marioc1836
    @marioc1836 Před 5 měsíci

    Pogo is my favorite plant because it grows fast and pretty low maintenance. It predominantly feeds from the substrate but I'm too lazy to add root tabs so I just add water ferts and feed a lot. Any browning you have will likely be it not having enough to eat and you can fix that by trimming or adding more ferts. With that being said trimming the leaves doesn't do much so cut from the stem. That stem can then be propagated in some rock wool and added to a new tank if you wanted. - Hope that helps!

  • @TheOriginalBrian

  • @nicksfishroom915
    @nicksfishroom915 Před 5 měsíci

    The key to planted tanks is low bioload high plantload.
    The Big one probably has ferts in the pot. Stem plants can easily be chopped back and replanted.
    In my opinion, root tabs are a way expensive way to buy ferts.
    I use a version of estimative index dosing, ~ 30-40ppm nitrates after ferts.
    For sure , if you're serious about planted tanks I'd recommend way more plants and half the fish load you're running there.
    Ditch the expensive root tabs and dry dose ferts.
    Dry dosing is the only way I can afford to run a room full of heavily planted tanks.

  • @LushSaltyAquariums
    @LushSaltyAquariums Před 5 měsíci

    The gravel substrate not ideal for stem plants. As it is not deep that hinders them as well. The reason potted plant is doing what is doing is that it hasn't had to deal with inert gravel yet. You could add more gravel or better yet sand and root tabs?

    Michael so I'm not an expert plant person. But I can tell you what has worked for me. (Never had the plant you got there) But I had a huge water sprite plant I had to keep trimming I just would trim off all of the browning/ yellowing leaves and it still would grow like crazy. In my 40 breeder planted tank I don't do anything but trim the really tall growth. What ever dies on the plant I leave it in the tank. I don't vacuum the tank the plants take care of my water parms. Just like nature does.

Every time I’ve trimmed mine and not let them just work it out themselves I’ve hated it 😂

    I would leave it because its shape is interesting unless this is what the leaves look like when they are grown emersed before being shipped to you. In which case, those emersed form leaves will yellow and die and the new submersed form of leaves will begin to grow. Being that it is a newer plant, it might just be getting over its shipping shock and getting used to its new parameters. I suspect a little of all three causes I mentionef.
