  • On the penultimate day of my weekend in Assynt, I climbed what is arguably one of the worlds most beautiful and enigmatic mountains, Suilven. This weekend in Assynt to climb Suilven also coincidentally fell on the same weekend the movie Edie was released in cinemas. The movie stars Sheila Hancock as a woman of advancing years who decides to climb Suilven.

    Safety always comes first .....I’ve uttered those words so many times ....Superb video and seen for the first time tonight 6/11/20 ....the bags lining the path added to the already amazing view as you made your way up 😍

    Great video. My 14 year old son wants to go wild camping so Suilven it's going to be next October (2021)

      I hope you have a brilliant time mate. Loch Invar is a great wee village too and the Lochinvar Pie shop is a must visit as is Achmelvic Beach. All in you just can’t beat that area of Scotland in my opinion!
      Best Regards,
      Douglas.

    Beautiful days; sorry the wind stopped your camping plans, but glad you stayed safe.

      Thanks for the comments David. It’s all good. The consolation prize was waking up to that view at the end.
      Maybe next time! 😁🙌🏼⛰

    Have to confess to having climbed all the Munros, but Suilven is my favourite in all Scotland. Good view of Meall Meadhonach at 9:37, which actually is not that difficult. There is a chimney on the north side, a straight forward scramble. I left my rucksack by the top as a marker where to descend from the small summit plateau. Thanks for this video.

      Hi Malcolm, apologies for the late reply, but thank you so much for your kind comments. The weather that day was great but the wind at the top was brutal. We decided as a group not to traverse the ridge, but to set up camp with the hope that we could do it the following morning before descending back down, however as there was virtually no let up with the force of the wind we decided to abandon the summit camp completely which we did with a heavy heart. This trip still remains the most magical place I’ve ever been. It’s a feeling and memory will cherish forever. I’m sure I may return one day for another go.

    Nice video, Douglas. I've just started bagging Munros (Mayar, Driesh, Schiehallion so far) and loving every minute! Hoping to do a lot more this year, and it's great when folk go to the effort of filming their own experiences so you get an idea of what's out there, so cheers. Suilven looks incredible and I hope it's not too long before you get another opportunity to camp on the summit.

      Thank you for the kind comments Fraser, and congratulations on your first 3 Munro’s.
      The vlogs that others posted help me greatly when I’ve planned trips so I thinks it’s a good thing to post vlogs of the trips to inspire others. That and the fact I’ll have some good memories to look back on one day.
      Suilven is one of the most magical places I’ve ever been and I’m planning to go back there in 2020. Maybe I’ll even get that overnight summit camp and sunrise!
      Hopefully you might post vlogs of your own trips my friend.
      Best Regards and keep climbing!

    Great video. Looks lovely. I've got a question ( perhaps a stupid question 😂 ). How do you know what path to follow when climbing these mountains? . Sometimes it looks unclear at bits of the route on which direction to take . Thanks .

      @DouglasGilgallon  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Lt H, sorry for not replying sooner. No such thing as a stupid question if you are unsure if the answer so no worries there.
      A lot of the paths up these mountains are so well trodden that you can’t to go wrong. That said a lot do not have great paths, or only partial paths, and so it’s very easy to lose you way. I always have a print out of the route that you can get for free on the Walkhighlands Website. A compass is a good idea, as is a map and a good quality GPS all make for a safe trip out.
      Hope that helps,
      Best Regards,
      Douglas.

    Where did you walk in from?

    • @DouglasGilgallon
      @DouglasGilgallon  Před 5 lety

      Thanks for asking Madcat100. From the small village of Lochinver, you drive about 15 mins to the car park at the start of the walk to Suilven. The car park is just before a place called Glencanisp Lodge. www.google.com/search?q=glencanisp%20lodge
      Hope this helps.
