  • A happy New Year 2019 and this was to be my first trip out of the year. Sgorr Na Ciche or a its more commonly known 'The Pap of Glencoe'. This mountain is an easily recognisable mountain on the outskirts of Glencoe village and boasts some amazing panoramic views from its summit. It is also notable because It is also linked geographically to the even more incredible Aonach Eagach Ridge.
The clouds did rob me of a view once I reached the summit, however the entire experience of this Graham classification mountain did not disappoint and had enough interesting terrain and views to more than make up for the lack of views from the summit.
The Pap of Glencoe (Scottish Gaelic: Sgurr na Cìche) is a mountain on the northern side of Glen Coe, in the Highlands of Scotland. It lies at the western end of the Aonach Eagach ridge, directly above the point where the River Coe enters Loch Leven.
The Pap is so named as it has a distinctive conical shape resembling a female breast (see: pap), particularly when viewed from the west. It forms part of the "classic" view of the entrance to Glen Coe.
The simplest route of ascent starts from the unclassified road between Glencoe village and the Clachaig Inn. A pebble path leaves the road about 1 km west of the youth hostel, and passes a white house on the left, reaching the bealach between the Pap and Sgor nam Fiannaidh, from where the Pap may be climbed. The final stretch up to the bealach forms a pathway by small gully; this section is often extremely muddy and boggy. The final hundred metres of ascent require some easy scrambling, and care is needed under winter conditions.

    Enjoyed watching the video! 👍.
I recently did the Pap of Glencoe hike and the views there were amazing. It was not as foggy and hence we got a good view of the snow clad mountains as well in the background while hiking!

Thanks Aneesh, glad you had a great day on the Pap, it’s a brilliant wee mountain for sure with great views if the weather is kind lol.

Hey how long does it take to the top roughly?

looks great- how tricky is the final scramble? looks pretty steep from a distance. I walked up and decided to turn right when the path leads to the final bit of the Pap as i am crap with heights.. Climed Sgorr Nam Fiannaidh which is next to it, which also had some scrambling but not as steep (it appeared)

I love the view of The Pap from the Ballachulish bridge, Makes a great picture. I mind coming down that path from Sgorr Nam Fiannaidh 7 years ago and i was tempted to try and bag it but i was dying for some chips out of the Clachaig Inn lol! Great film again Douglas, Bloody clag eh? But as you say its great just to get out, And i totally agree at 11:30 Clag or no clag why would you not? Good luck with this years bagging mate, Lets hope the weather is good for it. Take care, peter :))

Hi Pete, thanks for the kind comments pal. I first saw the pap in one of your videos away in the distance where you point it out. I’m just about post a new vlog after having had another go at Meall Glas (successful this time as the snow made the bog a lot easier to get across)!
But at the end of that trip I drove down to look at the Falls of Dochart, and I first saw them in your brilliant meall ghaordaidh vlog. I didn’t get the falls as fast flowing as you did because the water level was low, but they are still impressive all the same. Killin is a cracking wee village and I’ll definitely go back for a longer visit.
But of a slow start so far this year for me Pete, but I’ve got a lot pencilled in trying to get to 50 by the end of the year.
Take Care Buddy, and keep inspiring folks like me!
Looking forward to seeing your next adventure soon,
      Douglas 😁🙌🏼⛰🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Great to watch. We’re going to glencoe soon and thinking of doing this hike. Is it a difficult scramble at the top...going up and coming down?

    • @DouglasGilgallon
      @DouglasGilgallon  Před 3 lety

Hi Jennifer, no it’s barely a scramble, but it’s totally fine going up and down. Hope you get a better day than I did. The views are brilliant on the right day.
      Best Regards,
      Douglas.

Douglas Gilgallon We went up the Pap yesterday and were so lucky to have panoramic views at the top, despite mixed weather going up. Stunning scenery!! Thanks for your advice re the scramble at the top. Quite straightforward, but tricky finding the route down.

Hi Jennifer, I’m so pleased to hear you had a great hike up, and that you were rewarded with the spectacular views that the pap has to offer.
Best Regards, and well done again!
      Douglas.

Keep going Douglas! Great to see a fellow Scot doing CZcams videos! Well done on getting good views!! Have you been able to get out in the cold weather or has it made mountain climbing too dangerous (she who knows nothing of mountain climbing!!) ha ha!

Hello you too 😁. Alas, I’ve not been out since this particular Vlog. More because the free days I had fell on particularly rainy days, which invariably means cloud cover, which means zero chance of getting any decent views above 2000ft.
Undeterred I have many mountain trips in the pipeline for this year so hopefully I’ll be out again within the next few weeks. Aiming for 50 Munros this year (only at 22 bagged at the moment), so much to do!
Thanks for the supportive comments. 🙌🏼

Douglas Gilgallon it’s been a nightmare!! We’re the same 1 freezing day and 1 miserable day every weekend for the last 6 weeks!! Today was beautiful but I just couldn’t be bothered getting the camera out to vlog 🤣 50 Munro’s 🤯 good luck!! I’ll keep watching closely!!

Hi Douglas, love the videos. How long did it take to climb the Pap?

    • @DouglasGilgallon
      @DouglasGilgallon  Před 5 lety

Hi Canice, thank you firstly for your kind comment.
I was up at the top within
2 1/2 hours. Even with a short 20mins for lunch, the whole hike up/down took about 5 hours.
I would thoroughly recommend the Pap of Glencoe as a great day out, well pathed for almost the whole way up till the last bouldery part.
I hope if you decide to go that you get the views.
      Best Regards,
      Douglas 😁🙌🏼⛰

@@DouglasGilgallon thanks for the reply. I'm hoping to go over later in the spring, but might only have a short window to tackle any major hills. I'm mulling over the Pap or else the Buachaille. The videos are a great way of getting an idea of the route.
