One thing that really annoyed me about the punditry teams on BBC/ITV for the World Cup was that they were under this impression that the Nations League matches, which allowed England the chance to routinely play top opposition, were irrelevant.
Those games highlighted England's inability to beat 'top' level opposition, as well as their problem with scoring from open play against higher level teams. 6 games played, 0 wins, 2 goals from open play and another 2 penalties. They thrash Iran and all of a sudden, that's irrelevant.
One thing Southgate should be credited for is getting consistent results against the teams England are favourites to beat. Sweden in the last world cup and Iran/Senegal in this one. Teams that could be potential banana skins.
However, I don't have any faith in England getting past the very top sides in knockout games. Their football is too sterile and they seem to play with fear whenever they come up against the best. Beating Germany in the last 16 of the Euros last year is Southgate's best result to date, arguably. Even then, have you ever seen a German side as bad as this one? Also, Germany dominated England for a good 70 minutes and missed sitters before England had a kick in that game. Southgate has a bit of the Solskjaer fairy dust in his pocket. With the way England played in the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020, under a coach with a little less luck they would have been out to Colombia on penalties and Germany would have been home and dry before Sterling scored the opener. Southgate has 'world cup semi finalist and Euro 2020 finalist' on his CV but it was achieved with a lot of fortune. The path to the final in 2018 was very kind and he still didn't make it. England had home advantage at the Euros, were stationed in Wembley for every game bar one while everyone else had to travel around Europe, and had the full support of packed crowds when nobody had support like that for 18 months prior due to the lockdown. They got lucky vs Germany, robbed Denmark and yet Southgate believed his side that had one shot on target in 120 minutes against Italy 'deserved' to win the tournament.
Sometimes I wonder what this crop of players would be like in Guardiola's hands. England have some very technically gifted players, some of whom aren't even used. They have it in them to play progressive football, they have it in them to take games to the top sides. That potential will never be unlocked under Southgate.

I agree with Simon. Just like the defeats against Croatia and Italy, Saturday night felt like the game had gradually begun to slip away from us, that Southgate didn't take the initiative to change the momentum of the game and wrestle back some sort of dominance or control. Instead the response was sadly somewhat predictable: Frustratingly irrational and (in the case of Grealish's substitution) too late. Southgate has done well, but his ability to read and act on the fine margins in games has been exposed.

No one is talking about how the players lost their heads. The ref and France’s game management led to this yes but we needed to handle the pressure much better. The players were as jumpy as we were watching at home. Why was Henderson running the length of the pitch to close down their keeper? Why was the usually ice cold Bellingham looking like he was gonna burst into tears at every decision that didn’t go his way? I’ll tell you why. 1) Neither Southgate nor our leaders on the pitch calmed the situation before it spiralled. 2) Our mentality going into the game was all wrong. If you think that you’re the inferior team, you will believe that everything needs to go your way for victory. The reffing decisions then became more impactful. The actual inferior team, France were cute. They managed the game perfectly and in the end created the better chances.

Get Rashford (your top scorer and in serious form) on and Grealish to run at their already-flapping full backs. Don’t wait till 85 minutes which is too late whether we’re losing or not and then 2 minutes left of injury time for Grealish… Absolutely pathetic substituting decisions. They were better choices than Mount and Sterling even if Mount DID win us a penalty. We shouldn’t have to rely on penalties. They scored 2 from open play despite us having several tall players to mark theirs including Giroud but the less said about Maguire the better when it comes to big/tough teams… If I was a France player and saw Maguire starting I’d have been delighted. He won the U17s World Cup with England, he's now had some success with Swansea and even more with Forest... he's a brilliant communicator, media trained, very astute tactically, great with younger players, let's them off the leash and doesn't over train them etc.
Cooper knows the FA and England setups thoroughly, his style is very similar to the current high-press England way.

That is as good as it will ever get with Southgate in control. The team has not progressed since the Euros and he has not progressed since he relegated Middlesbrough. While France were getting the ball to their most dangerous players we were passing to our central defenders. Too often we were one slip away from handing a French fotward a shot at goal through being pressed by the French front three. The result was a long ball up field by passing our midfield. After the Euros we were given the twaddle "we will hold our hands up, learn, and move on". We haven't done that otherwise Sakka would not have been sitting down arguing with the linesman when France were scoring the opener. Our two wide players were not committed to creating chances for our main striker. Our game plan was non existant. This is as good as it gets for Southgate

The players he has we should take the game to france, play an expansive attacking game, that first 30 minutes of sitting back, 2 defensive full backs and 2 defensive midfielders is what cost us. 100% down to coaching and management. You have world class talent on the bench that doesnt play a single minute and the most defensive system considering the talent available, there was basically a 6 man defence until they conceded that first goal, once the shackles where off and they could play they looked world class, but that just highlights the negative system and tactics that started the game for me. Even the subs used and taken off where very odd. No trent, no maddison, and take off the 2 players who played the best, odd management, lost through fear of losing

No changes after equalising for over 20 minutes, and when he does its Saka for a recently arrived after a break-in Sterling?! No Rashford until around 80 minutes and Grealish on with seconds to go?! Boggles the mind, and why Southgate is neither an experienced nor an elite level manager. Hence, why many want him out. Is there no one advising him about this? Three tournaments and he has done this. So he either tweaks this or may have to depart. I'd rather he stay as he has put together a cohesive team, but now I'm more ambivalent. Maybe time for Howe or Potter, but please no Argentians that's just another kick in the teeth.

Ok- many say England could and should have won at least one of those tournaments but neither did Belgium, Spain, Germany or Portugal with their resources. The talent is there for the next few years as Qatar showed so it’s a good set up for anyone coming in to take over if Southgate decides to walk but if the FA get it wrong and appoint another Capello or McLaren type that just don’t fit the role or alienate the players, the improvement under Southgate will be wasted and count for nothing.

I don't like Southgate and want him gone, but what I will give him credit for and where he has been better than previous England managers is, he hasn't tried to get all his best players on the pitch all at once and has put out a more balanced and functional system.
For years, managers were cramming Lampard, Gerrard and Rooney in the same team. Southgate wouldn't have done that, he would have dropped one and maybe subbed one on for the other. Every team needs a Henderson despite him not being as talented as other players sitting on the bench.
I always said its not about having all your best players on the pitch, it's about having a system and playing the players who best suit the positions in that system.

The flack Kane is receiving is nonsense by the way. The reason he has been forced to drop deep is due to the lack of invention. Put a playmaker in the team (Maddison) and Kane can stay up there. We had no one in the area for most of the match because Kane is expected to do too much. Southgate is a footballer by numbers manager. It's just boring and easy to negate. We shouldnt be relying on winning penalties and converting them. He NEEDS ro fo but sadly won't.

This fantastic generation of players will be lost if they allow this pub team manager to continue leading them.

England FA are one of the best funded, PL is one of the best, players are coached by best in the world at club level, huge talent pool but we constantly under achieve or have potential for the future. It’s all BS. We struggle against all the top 7 European sides. We don’t go in and dominate and more importantly win consistently. Our weak link has always been the Manager at tournament football not qualification. We need to hire the best Manager out there with proven winning track record, pay them a huge win bonus but only sign them up on short contracts so they can return to club football after a couple years with England. This would encourage an elite Manager to try international coaching mid career, earn a fortune, enhance their reputation and give England access to the Klopps, the Peps or Ancelotti’s.

Context is everything.. A great manager maximises the potential of his team..What has he done?, Chelsea, Spurs, City, Liv have had many English players playing in the final rounds of the Uefa Champions League - this is another golden generation of players who have underachieved... Who have England beaten in WC's since 2006?? Tunisia, Panama, Colombia, Sweden, Slovenia, Paraguay, Trinidad, Ecuador, Iran, Wales and Senegal??/That's context for you... Bring on Brendan Rogers...
