      In '73 I saw these guys for the first time. I snuck under the rope while they were playing and got a close-up picture of Mick facing the rear of the stage, but that meant facing right at me. He of course had a cigarette attached to the end of the guitar.

    So the most important Uriah Heep albums according to Mick Box are: 1. Very Eavy..., 2. Demons&Wizards, 3.Abominog, 4.Outsider, 5. Wake The Sleeper... well, that's not your regular Heeplist for sure :)))))

  • @levvellene570
    @levvellene570 Před rokem

    I was born in 1967, and I first listened to my uncle's Uriah Heep records, and then eventually sort of inherited many of those which had passed on to my aunt, as payment for baby-sitting for her... Oh, and I got her double-LP of Sweet's "Strung Up" double album years before CD's were invented. :D
    But, as Mick says, there are so many Uriah Heep albums to choose from... My first to get my hands on were Look at Yourself, Demons and Wizards, Magicians Birthday, Sweet Freedom and Return to Fantasy, so those formed the core of what I loved about Uriah Heep back then, in the mid-70's to mid-80's, originally. But then I got smacked in the face by a record I got as part of a package-deal from my then-Music-Club: Fallen Angels! That one was so good, and then I got Firefly. Hanging Tree, Wise Man, so good things to remember out of those! Woman of the Night, Falling in Love, Fallen Angel I hesitate to state it, but I feel strongly that the redoubtable Mick Box partook of those recordings! :D
    I sure hope Mick Box will think nicely about John Lawton's contributions to the Uriah Heep canon! Many of us love those as much as both the early records and Abominog (Wow, I did like that one, once I discovered it).

    Great interview! And he has his own fully justified reasons for his picks, of course. But for me as merely a listener and fan, I'll actually agree with his first two and 5th picks (debut, Demons & Wizards, Wake The Sleeper) while replacing his 3rd with Look At Yourself and his 4th with Sea Of Light. Or I likely would replace their debut with Into The Wild. But regardless, "Sea Of Light" and "Demons and Wizards" are my top two, without a doubt!

      Finally somebody cited Sea of Light! I discovered Heep in the mid 80’s and bought many of the old albums. Demons and Wizards blew me away and made me a believer. However I enjoyed all the early records right up to Sweet Freedom, after which they tailed off and I stopped listening. Sure Abominog was a rebirth record but I found it overrated. Then I heard nothing more from them until I picked up Popoff’s collectors guides to metal. Now armed with Spotify and CZcams I have checked out many of the later records and got blown away again. Sea of Light is a forgotten masterpiece and criminally underrated. See how few even mention it?

    I certainly would not have picked "Outsider", but the rest of his list is close. I would have tried to find room for "Magician's Birthday" or maybe even "Sweet Freedom" instead. Glad he picked "Wake the Sleeper", which was the best Bernie Shaw album, imho. I hadn't been interested in Shaw or the band for years until that came out.

    I know many would disagree, but for me -- actually nothing changed, I would have had same opinion back in the 70's: 1. Look At Yourself (absolutely no doubt, it's #1 Heep album!), 2. Demons And Wizards, 3. Return To Fantasy, 4. Firefly (yes, Firefly!) 5. Magician's Birthday. Period.

    Imo their first 8 or 9 albums are classics. High And Mighty disappointed me and i kinda left at that point. However, their latest album Living The Dream is pretty solid, Byron would've made it a total masterpiece if he was still alive

      I never really got into Fallen Angel or whatever the name is .... Innocent Victim and Firefly were both a breathe of fresh air....and music. David Byron went on to Rough Diamond w/ Clem Clemson of Humble Pie. A great record.
