- Taken from Issue 40 of Guitar Interactive magazine Jamie Humphries Interviews the legend that is Brian May.
Brian May is a unique figure in Rock guitar and he has been interviewed on many occasions in many different publications, so when we were finally able to arrange an interview with him, we decided to take a different route. Instead of sending a mere journalist to interview him, we sent Jamie Humphries, who as our features explain has a unique inside approach to the Brian May team. We like to think we've produced the definitive Brian May special as a result.

I met Brian in the late sixties, I had a Watkins echo box,I took it to an electrical parts shop in Harrow on the Hill, Brian introduced himself and spoke highly of "The Shadows" and how he loved Shadoogie and produced a sixpenny bit that was filed down,This he informed me how to get the sound of that particular track, Brian also told me about how he and his father were making a Guitar out of the wood from over the fireplace, So this would have been well dried out, Burns pick ups, And he was picking up parts for the electrics, Such a nice guy,Even before he was famous!

Everyone has heard the story of how Brian made his guitar, and how he bought 3 pickups for £9 pounds, I believe. So you were there to actually see part of that iconic story, as it was happening. Very cool.
He deserves a nod for the huge amount of charity work he does. A true "Champion".
That was what made Queen so special... each of them were geniuses in their own right. Brian and John Deacon both have PhDs, Roger Taylor is a dentist, and Freddie had a degree from art school.
John didn't have a PhD. He did a post grad degree in acoustics and vibration technology.
Roger's not a dentist. He quit dentistry studies to gain a biology degree. Freddie gained a diploma in art and design.
No Rodger was not a dentist, I saw an interview with him and he said he stopped at the point where I had to look into people's mouths LOL but he did complete a degree in biology
I love how he can talk for hours on a question, I really love watching interviews with him ❤️
He survived apparently intact and sane. He's made a real difference to his chosen fields. Thanks Brian.
What a humble and magnanimous dude Brian May is. For a guy who inspired countless guitarists to play, he is really mellow about the whole thing.
When he said that roger plays to freddie and he plays to roger and thar sometimes he thinks he's going too fast my heart broke a little, I love him.
7.27 .." I feel lifes too short , you are not up there to show off" Absolutely say all about Brian May , such a great guy.
Music on earth is just an introduction to Heavens music, this life is short but its not the end, put your faith in Jesus ,you must be forgiven ,Jesus gave His Life and died for us, brian is pretty wise i pray he comes to the Lord

Brian has been Brian for all these years, that's what I respect and admire. That consistency over time is very rare in the business.

Haven't even finished watching the whole thing yet but I have to say that I really agree with Brian about not playing to show off. What a refreshing comment from a musician with the talent he has! PLAY WHAT YOU ENJOY!
That has always been my problem, actually. It happens to be that I do enjoy ONLY showing off. I always hated that "play what you enjoy" stuff as it never appealed to me. When I play slow I feel like I'm going nowhere and start falling asleep. Do you guys have that too? Or am I the only freak here? Of course, I do enjoy the complexity of an occasional fingerstyle lick which I attempt to learn, but in general - the faster the better. I tried to slow myself down sometimes but it never works.

I think without his hair during 70’s, You wouldn’t think Brian would be in a Rock & Roll band knowing that he’s very calm, and so soft spoken not a typical for a rockstar. 😄 Thanks heaven he’s not ruined by drugs. 🌟❤️
Brian May ia a genuine nice human being
I have seen Queen live many, many times over the years starting with A Night at The Opera
and I was never disappointed. Brian May is just an awesome, hard working musician, as was the entire band. Wonderful. Awesome.
Great interview. Just love Bri's honesty. He's utterly amazing to be embarking on yet another world tour. Most of us in our 60s have had enough of work and are looking forward to retirement but not him. He's recently released another book, worked with NASA on the New Horizons project and of course his work with animal rights and a dozen other ventures that fill his life.
I saw the CZcams of his bungled guitar riffs and it was extremely tacky. He's played millions of chords and notes correctly over the years, so to have the few occasions where it went badly is extremely unfair without stating what was going on at the time that led to the mistake. As Bri said in this interview, things can and do go wrong in the live environment.
Hat's off to him for his continuing enthusiasm and energy in wanting to entertain us after all these years, Few rock stars of his vintage are touring or if they do it's only a few shows here and there.
Incredibly solitary and moving moment at 14:04 when Brian goes within himself for but a moment when thinking of Freddie. Best Brian moment I’ve ever seen. I want there to be this Heaven that I’ve been told about by my grandma, I’ll keep believing.

Brian remained humble despite the huge successes he's been through over the past 40 years....not a very original question but I would ask him which bands/music he likes nowadays.

He has mentioned Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme in past interviews as someone he admires.

Wow - hearing him talk about making sure he plays enough in advance of a tour to ensure he has calluses on his fingers - for some reason I find that fascinating.
Excellent, fantastic interview! Brian is wonderful as always-true rockstar with a genuine humility. He always gives great interviews no matter what is the quality if the interviewer. But this guy on the right is fantasitc interviewer. Perhaps it comes from the fact that they appearently know each other and he respects Brian and doesnt try to get some flashy news out if him. Loved it! Thank you!
He publicly discussed his depression and was almost suicidal which I couldn’t believe that , but then I thought , he’s human, and that shit can hit anybody , inc myself .

Jackie robinson - You must be out of your mind...! Townshend always was an average guitar player! His main card was/is song composition. He's a brilliant song writer.

I have recently discovered a lot of hidden gems that I'm sure the audience would love.
I love playing Queen material. Not your standard Intro, verse, verse, chorus, etc . Even when you can identify structures that are verse-like or chorus-like they are often very different at different points in the song. Lots of key changes, and subtle timing changes, and structure changes. You can't go on autopilot - you really have to pay attention. But that keeps it interesting and fresh for me.

I haven't seen any of their concerts with the Adam Lambert yet so I'm not going to comment at this time I'll have to watch and see
This is rare, every comment is positive about Brian, as well as a killer guitar player he seems the coolest kindest dude on the planet

When Brian does an interview with other journalist he is very guarded. When interviewed by other musicians like in this interview he is comfortable and himself , Can see he is very comfortable here

At 15:40 Brian Talks about soft fingertips and blisters. When I was a kid in the 70's I used to put the flaps of skin - from the Blister(s) - in place and use my sisters nail varnish to harden, or re- harden my fingertips. It worked?!!

Don't you just want to slap him when he says rubbish like he's not a great guitar technician? I've heard hm play flamenco guitar on Red for Innuendo... not the studio album, but live! His peers like Jeff Beck describe him as the best rock oriented guitarist. High praise indeed for someone who is according to Brian, technically "incompetent"!
He keeps it real, he doesn't have tickets on himself, he's humble and sincere and he might underplay his own abilities but doesn't that make him a much lovelier person than someone who is constantly telling the world how wonderful he is? What's not to love about Brian May and quite frankly, no, I don't want to slap him, I want to hug him!
Crazy he was able to do that live since Steve Howe did a phenomenal job on the studio version
