Thank you so much for showcasing this! I was dreading having to spend another $80 for a new remote since my remote is from the 3+, but clearly the person I asked at a huge electronics retail chain had no idea what he was talking about.
Very useful, but if anyone still has problems - please change the wifi band setting in your gopro to 2.4 GHz, as 5 GHz seems not to be supported. THIS ALSO WORKS with the 3 button / three button version that I have (with my 7 black).

couple questions can you pair the remote up to 4 different cameras, can you use it to turn the camera on and off or just record and change mode, and what is the range that you have to be in for it to work with the cameras ?

How do you turn it off the GoPro remote? By pressing the red circle again?. I'm in the market for one and just getting started with this technology.
Was wondering also if I needed my cell phone on me at all times for the wifi signal. For example, Turning my phone off and using my GoPro remote.

Because the battery on a 2 button remote will last about 2 camera batteries, I got a second 2 button with my 2 extra batteries. I had a nightmare trying to pair with the *new" one & once I did it was a nightmare getting it to switch back to the other. The way the 7 black would reliably switch from one to the other consistently was to switch the wireless connections off. Then I would set the connect device to smart remote as you detail in step 2. Pairing automatically turns on wireless connection when pairing devices is selected. The only difference is the device must be stopped after it responds. With the 2 button remote just tap the red button once. To save juice, turn off wireless connections always before powering down..
Use this only if you have 2 or more remotes. If you have just one, the camera stays paired while wireless is on even if the camera is off. The remote can be used to turn the camera on and to record/stop etc.
