"You're sitting in a tent. Despite the freezing snow outside, you're warm. The hikers sit around you, drunkenly laughing and going on. The food is almost ready. Suddenly, you feel a burning pain inside you. It steadily grows as the pressure builds. As the pain becomes unbearable, you explode in a huge fireball. You...are a stove. And this is the Red Thread."

Explosions can easily destabilize snow that's fragile enough for an avalanche. Group sees something they might interpret as a yeti, get drunk talking it over around the fire, the stove explodes (which is Not just a stove fire, explosions are different) and causes initial injuries, it destabilizes the snow which starts coming down, the group scatters away from the chaos and then tries to survive the aftermath. An animal scavenges some of the remains (missing soft tissue), but not others (buried by snow). Radiation could be from either old lamps with radioactive components, stray weather phenomena (thinner atmosphere at high elevation), or background radiation from soviet weapons testing.

You are a siberian pine tree. You've spent your 20 years of misery growing along the edge of a tree line in the remote Devils pass. The most recent snowfall finally began your slow decent into the next stage of existence as it broke many of your limbs off due to the weight. You see a group of hikers stop at the top of the hill above you and gather fragments of your self to burn, infuriating you. You've spent all this time in cold misery and now you can sense fragments of yourself warming before losing sensation. In your anger you rupture a pocket of pine sap, detonating the stove the hooligans were using to bring upon your fragmented fate. In the resulting explosion, one of the hiking nerds lumbeerjack jackets is shredded by the magnificent knot from wense your sappy revenge plot stemmed. As the non-deciduous detritus settles along the snow, an Ural owl swoops in to pick out the best pieces to make a nest from the shrapnel.

I think they were in the tent when a large hunk of packed snow dislodged from the slope above them and crushed the tent.
Several of them had broken ribs and internal hemorrhaging and I think that could have been caused by the weight of the snow slamming them into hard items within the tent like cots or frame posts. The ones with burns were likely closest to the stove and were burned when it was crushed/knocked over and they were pressed against it, the spilled fuel could have also started a fire.
Then, being that they were all sandwiched between snow, trapped inside the now crushed tent, in order to get out they probably used any knives they could locate to cut out of the tent causing the slices. Since they split up and we’re found in various areas, it’s likely that they escaped the tent separately in groups who were trapped in the same pockets of tent as eachother.
After escaping, most of them were severely injured from the crush and were probably disoriented leading them to wonder for a bit not sure what to do. If you imagine how they must have been dressed and what it would be like to try and wriggle out of a canvas tent that’s squished under heavy snow, it’s not surprising that most of them would have lost random clothing items, specifically boots.
I don’t know about you but if I had just been hiking in snow I would probably take my boots off to dry my feet or at the very least, untie them to let air in.
Once out of the tent I would assume the ones in worst mental shape would have wondered or ran away and passed from the elements like the two near the tree. The 4 in better state of mind who stuck together and looked for shelter are pretty self explanatory. As for the one who was hunched over a rock strangely, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone who was bleeding from the heart and running on adrenaline would eventually have their heart give out, causing them to hunch over a rock and die there. Especially in this cold where their muscles were probably all tensed and rigid already.
I think the main thing that trips people up with this case is just not being able to conceptualize all the ways that being crushed in a tent full of camping gear can injure you. It would be like tossing a frog into a bag of legos and then stomping on it once. The frog probably wouldn’t instantly die but would sustain catastrophic internal injuries in random places relative to what legos it was pressed into.
As for any of the strange mutilations, I think they can all be explained by scavenger animals and decomposition. When a person dies with cats, the first things the cats eat are soft accessible tissues like lips and eyelids and ears.
As for the radiative clothing, we know one guy did work at a place where he was exposed to radiation. The comment is always made that it would be unlikely he still had and was using the clothing he wore for that work, but it doesn’t have to be. The type of clothing you wear in cold weather and for camping tends to be the most durable robust clothing you own, which also is typically the oldest clothing you own. I’ve gotten many new shirts and pairs of pants in the last 10 years, but my winter coats, thick sweatshirts and camp specific clothing I’ve had for at least 10 years, some things longer. If he had stored these clothing items in the same closet as other robust work apparel that he used in the plant for a few years, they could easily have a contaminated residue be detectable years later.

It's just an average Eastern Europe moment, people from these parts(I'm also from Eastern Europe) are just strong and independent. We are so independent that we rennovate by ourselves, each house(if you are lucky and are living in one,not in an apartment) has its own garden and animals, and we just grow our own food. In the far east the weather is harsher so the people living there are used to extreme winters so it explains why those hykers were not afraid of the weather and were so crazy to go so many days in an epedition.

I think the injuries to the hands that resemble hand-to-hand-combat make total sense, even if a fight didn't occur before the incident. To put it in the style of red thread: you are digging in the snow with your bare hands. Maybe there's been an avalanche or an explosion. Your fingers go numb and your hands lose all dexterity in the cold, but you have to dig quickly or otherwise cannot stop-- maybe you need to dig down to build a fire that will keep going in a storm or hurridly dig out supplies. maybe your friend or even your own limb is trapped under the ice and snow. so you begin to use your knuckles to keep digging. It's going to be like punching a wall repeatedly, but it's at least going to feel like you are a little less likely to break your fingers clean off.
Edit to add: I've also never been sure that it wasn't possible for some accident or fall to have happened after fleeing the tent, thinking more specifically of the group that survived long enough to make shelter, yet some of them died of very fresh injuries.

    • @ladyacid654
      @ladyacid654 Před 3 měsíci +4

Heck, I once had a frosted over freezer and trying to break up the ice in that left my hands looking like I'd been in a fight because I was stupid to not wear hand protection. None of the injuries seem particularly strange to me when you're trying to clamber through soft and shifting snow, after a wall of ice and mountain runs you over and forces you into trees.

About the inner monologue thing. The studies that popularized that myth where there are people without inner monologues doesn't say that. Media interviews with the researchers so imply that, but that's just sensationalism. The actual study says everyone turns off their inner monologue sometimes, and some people do that more often than others. To their findings, no one is to the level Wendigoon described. There are people online that say they don't have one, but until they are properly studied, I'd chalk that up to people not understanding that it isn't a literal voice like a schizophrenic patient would hear.

I never understood this, do people who have an inner monologue go around narrating stuff to themselves like "ah today is a beautiful day" or something? Do you say good morning to yourself in your head when you wake up? The only time I have "inner monologue" is when thinking about what I should say or type, such as when I was thinking about how to write this comment. But I never said to myself in my head "Hey, I should respond to this guy" etc. Then again I never heard a voice in my head while reading either.

@@barne1851Yes, I occasionally do say to myself in my head "I should do this", or think about something as if I was explaining it to someone, or how should I approach this issue - should I try this, which will have these consequences, but allows that, but if I do it other way it will solve the consequence but I can predict another one will appear instead later etc. It's not another voice, still it's me. It's not as if I communicate with myself, it's not dialog. It also isn't just connected to what I should let out of my mouth or what I should type, though much of that seems to have that idea behind it, with the example of explaining something, just to myself, not anybody else.

@@barne1851I do everything you just said. The fact that people don’t do this is pretty incomprehensible to me. Waking up and thinking “wow, the weather is great today!” And doing things such as having a debate weighing up the pros and cons of two options is normal to me.
Not being able to hear the words when you read is… I mean, it’s how I take in the information I read. So I can’t even imagine!
