Hollywood magic!!!!! Wish my axle came out that easy!!!
I just did a CV axle on my truck for the first time, the inner joint was severely rusted onto the shaft. I tried every trick I could find on CZcams to try and get it out. I was prying on it and hitting it with a 4lb sledge for hours. I tried hooking a chain to it and pulling on it with a floor jack, I went and bought a slide hammer with the vice grip attachment. I cut grooves into it so I could hook onto it with the 3 jaw slide hammer attachment, I put a come-a-long on a pry bar to maintain force against it, heated it with a torch, and used a slide hammer at the same time this thing did not budge it was really stuck. My final and successful trick was to cut the thing off with an angle grinder! I accidentally cut the splines a little bit, hopefully this doesn't cause me problems in the future.
Huge help. Job done quick and easy, took me a total of 40 minutes. If you can't get it in/out, loosen your upper ball joint, that'll drop the knuckle forward and give you enough room. Make sure the new axle snaps over the snap ring as well or it will come out. *if prying old axle out doesn't work, hit it with a hammer, that should get it off the snap ring.
I wouldnât have nearly as much highschool memories if it wasnât for this great channel
I did my drivers side yesterday and had to take the top ball joint nut off and separate from the knuckle and take the lower bolt off the shock to make room for the joint by the knuckle to pass through the control arms
Did you have to take off the sway bar tie rod too?
If there's not enough clearence room to slide the axle out you may need to remove the lower ball joint to slide the axle out.
You made it look so easy to remove the cvc half shaft I am out here beating on my prybar with 5lb mallot hammer
I like to see you do the same job but like everybody else does it
@1foxisathome It should just slide into place. You may want to make sure that there isn't a piece of debris blocking it from going in.
You make it seam easy and. You have a impact wrench ! I'm 73 and. No impact hope I do it right ! Thank you for your video !
EXACTLY THE VID I NEEDED....THANK A MILLION!
@Karl Daigle THANK YOU so much for posting the tip to seperate the upper ball joint! With this video & your tip I was finally able to remove the CV axle on a '04 Durango that was seized so tight I broke a 3-jaw puller, bent the screw on another & even used MAP torch on & it still wouldn't pop loose! Now I finally have room to get at the lower ball joint I need to replace.
This never mentions the retention clip, and if it did I missed it.
That retention clip is detrimental to longevity of both the output shaft and the cv shaft....
James Smith he did not mention the retaining clip however it is clearly in place as evidence by the cv joint remaining in place when he moves it back and forth and you can hear when the clip makes contact and prevents further movement. You are correct that if not installed properly there will be movement which can cause excessive and premature wear on splines of both intermediate shaft and half shaft. Which can also cause half shaft to eventually fall out of differential side.
Thanks for clarifying. This was a joy to read!
thank you, great video. just did mine and very simple, just take the tire and axle nut off. If you need an extra inch to get it off the shaft all the way you just gotta jack up the control arm a little that'll give more room to slide it off. I put my jack stands on main frame on side you're working on and an extra one or wood blocks on front of vehicle main frame for added precaution.
We currently do not have an auto repair video that shows this particular repair.
I have a 2015 Ram 1500 four-wheel drive. It looks like the same as this 2012. The CV axle is spline on both sides. The inner axle side has a ring in between the splines correct? I can't get the passenger side off... Maybe my pry bar is not big enough. Plus it looks like you were able to take out the CV axle without unbolting the tie rod end or the upper control arm ball joint
Normally you need a special to get the seals in and out. They do sit within the axle case to prevent leaks from the inside out.
So are you not going to show the part where the inner joint of the cv axle hits on the bump stop above the lower control arm? Or did your model have that cut off?
I cannot get the old axle off of the differential. I have been bangin on my crow bar for 3 hours not and has baley moved. There has got to be some other way to get it out. Or is there something I am doing wrong?
That method only works if stubshaft doesn't come out of diff, my luck but did manage to get stub shaft out of cv joint by driving a piece of all thread thru inside of cv joint
Perfect timing. Swapping both fronts right now.

Does this procedure work for the driver side? Id love not to have to take everything loose.
What size is the upper ball joint nut,or what suze wrench will fit, metric or standard?
I was able to remove the axle using your method but I am unable to put a new axle back in. I can't seem to get it to compress down enough, almost need another 1/4 inch. Any ideas?
You gotta un bolt the top of the hub let it swing down I think the tie rod or steering linkages what ever you call them, that should give you way more than enough room
Ever figure it out? Same thing going on
Same here, what did you end up doing?
Great video, I was curious if you had a video on replacing the stub shaft? I've been searching the Internet without any luck. If you yourself don't have a video maybe you can point me in the right direction. Thanks.
rogerlee111 carefully use a chisel and remove the stub shaft bearing from the actuator housing make sure the bearing race comes out too then take off the 4wd actuator cover and you should be able to move the stub shaft out
I am also looking for a video on that. Any luck finding a good video?
I have seen many videos for the right side but none for the left side. Working on a 2007 R1500
What year is the Dodge Ram that your working on, and the series?
Heads up. Way harder then he makes it look
Can you also change the axle seal this way too?
Is it possibly too switch from U-joints on front drive axle too CVC shaft on 2500 4x4 dodge pick up Cause CVC shaft turns with less resistance on gravel and dry dirt
It should probably be mentioned .I guess you maybe did not know. Those hubs on these trucks are on recall for lubrication / failure issue.Other wise its a 500-700 dollar repair.
I can't get my passenger side axle to move back in to get to the wheel hub? What method is best for one person to do? I have an 05 Ram 4x4
The door lock actuators may be getting weak, or you may also want to check the wire harness between the drivers side door and the body of the truck, to see if there's a frayed wire that may be loosing power when you hit the switch for the rear doors. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
8 years later, guess what i am doing this job now thanks bro

Also, On my 2006, the hub nut is a 36mm. Check it first before you get started.
Does this trick work for the driver side as well? I know there is less room on that side.
Does this work for the lifted axles? đ
So yeah, maybe you should have mentioned something about needing to disconnect the stub shaft before you tear apart the circ clips on the end of the shaft in the differential like I did after watching your video. Thanks
How do you disconnect it?
How do I get the shaft that is stuck into the axel out?
Does it matter if you have a torsion spring system? Does it change installation and removal?
Thank you! You guys are a life saver!
@telepicker83 You may want to have your local dealer run your VIN# to see if it calls for a different part for some reason. Hope this helps you out. Have a great day!
I hit a curb 3 years ago and my trucks never been able to be aligned
since... I found out my camber bolts got bent, but the impact also bent
the guides that the camber washer rides. Are those replaceable or is
that a welded piece?. I have an 07 dodge ram 1500. I actually think you guys are close my work in Ayer, and are building where I use to live in Pepperell... Small world
What do I do when the inner shaft on passenger side comes out with cv-axel not allowing me to pull cv axel out all the way? It stops at the frame bump for lower control arm
After replacing my CV axle on the right side, it's not staying in place. I'm guessing the C clip needs to be replaced. Will I need to pull the axle back out to replace it?
Hi I love you guys videos and your parts are really good I'm always online buying them I needed to know if this same routine is performed on a 2006 Dodge Durango
+Louis Leon Thank you for the great reply. We love to empower our customers by showing you how-to perform your own auto repairs while installing our high quality auto parts. This should be a similar process to installing on your Durango. Have a great day! 1aauto.com
i cant get my cv shaft to push through my hub. any tricks you might have. i have beaten on it with a sledge and it wont budge. 2004 1500 4x4
You could try to put some penetrating oil on them. The should come free as shown in this video. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
You gotta be pretty damn ripped to just push that friggen thing back and out like that lol
When replacing CV and it will not go past the C ring what can be done?
Your videos are great but do you have a ball joint video? Upper and lower?
Thank you for watching. Unfortunately we do not have a video for your application. We will keep this repair in mind for future videos.
1aauto.com 888-844-3393
What year is the Dodge Ram that you're working on?
What about the seal shouldnt I replace that too, it is leaking at the axle connection
Do auto and manual use the same cv axles?
great vid, do you guys have a video on how to replace the drivers/left front axle u-joint on a 1999 1500 ram. my u-joint is bad and have to replace it. Thanks
What year is that truck. My 07 has the 4x4 actuator on the front of the axle. Cant get mine to come out like you did. Mine had to come out with the hub removed...
Mine did not come straight out even with taking all the weight off the suspension. I had to take off my upper ball joint. Just one more nut to removeđ to getter done. 35mm for 03 dodge
Thanks for checking us out. We are glad you were able to complete your repair. 1aauto.com +jerrid19
Will this work on the driver side on a 2006?
It looks easy here, it's not. Secondly, make sure you correctly diagnose what is going on with your truck. I replaced both the CV Joint and a Hub assembly on a 2006 SLT 4x4. The problem is still there and is actually the differential. I believe it's covered by the warranty. I'm out the bucks for a CV joint and Hub assembly plus install. My bad, don't let it happen to you....Be careful.
Just to let yâall know he was in a âother videoâ and left something out you need to make sure that your little snap ring is in the inter shaft on trans case
+Triston Villnave Thanks for the tip! We'll pass this info along to our production team.
Is your video for a 2wd or a 4wd? Because tried this method on my 2004 (4wd), but it didn't work! The Axle did not come out.
Cv axles are only on 4wd
I cannot get mine off on the differential side, what is the trick? it seems like i just need a quarter inch to go, but cannot get it to budge. any ideas
Big let down for mine...I got into this and figured out that, for some reason, my '04 stock shafts will not come out without removing the ball joint and rocking the knuckle out to gain more length. I was hoping mine would be as easy as the one's in this video. I'd like to figure out the difference in the two types.
i had to replace the wheel hub and the only way was to take it off the uper ball joint and pull it threw the knuckel i live in mass so all the salt i think mine is frozen in place it would not budge
@Travis Thacker
What are you going off about? The ball joint is one bolt compared to two on the upper control arm and two or three good hits with a hammer and it's separated. Also doing that you don't need an alignment like you do after removing your upper control arm.
Your videos are always informative but this one had rally bad angles to see what were you doing .....I hope you can do an alternative video of dodge ram with better camera angles like were you are standing from.
+A E Thanks for the feedback!
I put the new cv on but Iâm having issues with the cv sliding off the axle shaft why is this? Itâs probably seated in the hub and I installed it just as shown
How do you install the stub shaft axle the part you have to open up the diff cover to get out?
How do remove the stub shaft from the driver side cv axle? 2008 doge ram 1500
Does that work the same way on the driver side
I need to see this done on an 01 ram 1500 baddly im searching youtube and not finding a single one of that year on here the 01 ram has a different set up from the o2 pictured here no rubber boot shaft goes directly into the diff axle tubes with little room between them and the hub is it just held in by the hub or is there more to it? anybody knows please comment on this and let me know the u joint on it is ready to explode any day rattles like a death trap
i had shop change front cv's but on the front passenger side the cv pulled out with the stub axle/bearing? stuck to it? is that normal?
Does it need to be jacked up to just INSTALL?HAve one that needs axles itâs just setting outside with wheels on
+DA9AyyMike JDM Thanks for watching! Yes you will want to at least put the front end up on jack stands to perform this repair.
i have a 2002dodge ram 1500 my power locks work on the front dooors but on the back doors it doesn't unlock the doors all the way. The locks disengage partially not all the way. I have to manually pull up the locks to open the doors. What do I do in fxiing this problem?
I bought a 35mm socket. Tore down my front end. Guess what? It's a 36mm socket you need. Thanks for making my life a little bit harder.
What to do when the stupid shaft comes out with the cv joint and cant get pass the top frame where theres a rubber now i put the axle back in and started leaking i probably broke the seal...
Do you have a video on changing the drive side intermediate shaft. intermediate
+Bryant Portrey We can certainly check for you: could you please provide us with your vehicle information?
Do you know if the procedures are the same for the 4th gen rams as well??
Thanks for any help!
We currently do not have an auto repair video on that particular year, make and model. It might be a similar process.
Does this process work on the 4th gen Rams? Mine is a 2017. Also does it work for driver and passenger side?
+Brian B The installation process should be very similar and will work for both sides.
I'm working on the driver side on mine, I've spent a couple hours now and I cannot get the axle to break loose, I've tried hammers, pry bars, chains, heat, I can not get it to budge, theres a ton of play where the shaft goes into the differential so I think I've got more than a cv axle problem, what can be my issue? Why wont it come out?
Did you ever get it unstuck?
I have a 2002 ram 1500 4x4.... my axle seals ( where the cv axles are inserted into the main axle tube/ diff.) need to be replaced. I have the seals, and have searched every corner of the web hoping to find someone who has tackled this task.... to no avail.... the dealership told me that the front carrier has to be removed and a special tool was needed to remove the seals from inside the axle... but are reinstalled from the outside of course... makes no sense to me.....
2017 letâs go
Great video ...thanks đ
How does it lock on to the shaft?
The half shaft that my 02 calls for in the parts stores is too short. Does anyone know how I can tell if/how it's been modified? Looks all stock...no lift, etc...
How did you put that axle back on mine won't go over it did you turn it a weird way
+Jacob Yost Thanks for checking us out! You will need to compress it into the hub to allow for the clearance for it to seat properly.
At 5:13. How about next time you stop and get a tool that will torque that nut properly? Also, you are doing damage to the torque wrench by going over its limit. Just my 2 cents
One thing most of you DIY garage mechanics need to understand is that EVERYTHING IS EASIER with a lift so that you can COMFORTABLY and SAFELY work under a vehicle.
If I cannot get a new axle where I am, is it safe or how far could I safely drive without the axle installed to get a replacement?
+Brad Biwer Thank you for watching! You cannot drive without a CV axle, as that it what is holding the hub and bearing together. Without that axle the wheel would come apart.
@@1AAuto Thank you for your reply! What if the axle has completely come apart and I left the end in the hub? Assuming nothing is there to put everything out of balance of course...
Yeah going a torque over maximum number a lot donât know that.
I have a 2002 1500 quad cab like the one the video
Is there anything different between 2 and 4 wheel drive? I'm currently at step 2:44. Thanks in advance
+Joshua Warner The 2WD truck will not have front axles
1A Auto Parts can you check the other comment in the wheel bearing video. I'm literally all out of ideas
Is this the same process for a 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport?
+Morrall Blake It will be a similar process, but it won't be identical as they're different model years. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com?CZcams&CTA%20Comment&ATony 866-403-3393
You're doing it on the ground you should have loosen that boat before you put it in the air axle nut
Mine is stuck on there horribly. I can't get it to even back 1mm away from the differential.
Thank you!
Probably going to need to take off tie rod and control arm too.
What size socket need remove the the front axle nut's ?
+N.g Garage It should be a 35MM. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com
36
Easier CV axles on these ones i got the same style on my 03 4x4 off road package ram 1500
Now do a 2017
You didn't have to pop the ball joint to get the axle in and out??
It should come out as shown in the video.
I had to pop upper ball joint, no problems except for this.
I have a 05 RAM 1500 the hub nut is a 36mm not a 35mm
I have an 05 RAM 1500 and the hub nut is 35mm.
