    Thanks for the video! I tried pulling the left side intermediate shaft out this morning using the Dodge repair manual but that didn't work. So, I ended up doing it the way you indicate here. It was a lot longer in doing it this way but ultimately, I got the shaft changed finally!

    I'm glad you made this video. This is how I just had to get my drivers side shaft out (replacing cv axles, stub axle and drivers side axle). However, I did mess up and the gears popped out just like you warned. I was able to get one of them back in but the other was fighting me so I gave in for the night. Now I'm researching how to put it back in lol

    me and saved me time. 👍🏼🇺🇸

    You don’t need to remove the clip or the pin, just wedge a pry bar between the shaft and the pin and tap on the wedge and it’ll pop out the shaft from where the spring clip seats, this is only good if you don’t have the removal tool to clamp on the end of the shaft.

  • @impax012063

    Excellent! Thats exactly what I wanted to know!! I did everything to boom that shaft out of there but NO WAY would it pop... I"ll try this!

  • @JacksonGuitarsPlayer03

    The other side you just slide right out with the old axle usually how it comes out. It’s still in the CV axle. I’d install a new one in new axle. Then slide it in. Nothing happens.

    I saw this video, tried other ways before i decided to give in. Ended up putting vise grips at the end and tight as i could and hammered it while i spun the shaft with the vise grips.. Popped right out.. Might also have helped that i made a big groove with the air chisel to hold the vise grips from sliding off

    I replaced the CV axle and now something is making a clunking noise I pulled it back apart and I can see the clutch collar is not being held it's just wobbling around inside I lined it back up and assume it's seated put it all back together and still the noise. It does go away when I engage 4wd

      @@dproulx797 figured it out the dust shield and spacer was taken out at some point. The CV and intermediate were too tight against each other and chewed up the bushing in the end of the CV which is the only real thing keeping the shafts true. So the CV was wobbling in the housing luckily it did no damage to the splines on either shaft and i thought it had wiped out the seal but it didn't. I got lucky I guesse.

Any advice? I can get exactly 2 fingers in there. have tried a hose clamp like a ring compressor around it, poking and prodding to no avail... any suggestions? thanks again!

    • @dproulx797
      @dproulx797  Před 4 lety +1

      I didn't really have any issues but maybe try to squeeze it in from the outside end by the seal but make sure you have the center pin installed to stop it from going in too far.

    • @dproulx797

  • @swiftaudi
    @swiftaudi Před 5 lety +3

    That clip doesn't need to be removed for the front diff. Take a pry bar or something long and hit the end with a hammer and the intermediate shaft will pop out. It does need to be removed for the rear but the rear clip is a different style

    ... anybody notice the "snap rings" or "retaining clips" are thinner than the originals? I replaced the left front transaxle last year, and just replaced the LF caliper and noticed there's slop between the axle and the diff. housing. I'm wondering if that clip didn't disintegrate or pop off. Did anyone use TWO when replacing?

  • @MrShadowpanther3

    Did you have to remove the Steering equipment to get to the front of the differential? I may need to do this on a 2003 Dodge Durango and there is about 1/2 inch of clearance. Kicking myself now. I was replacing the drivers side CV axle and it was frozen onto the intermediate shaft. They both came out since the inner clip is well lubricated and the one in the CV has bee on there since 2003... Had the opportunity to replace the bearing as well but did not think about it. When all reassembled I noticed there is some play in that intermediate shaft bearing. Need to tear everything back down as I can still hear a bit of a thump thump thump as I go around a corner. Got the click click click out. New hub, new ball joints... that is the last piece of rotating equipment that seems to be making noise.

    • @dproulx797
      @dproulx797  Před 5 lety

      No, I didn't have to remove any steering components when doing this. To me, a thump thump thump sound more like a larger item than a bearing. Good luck, I hope all goes well.

    Thanks man, I am just now looking at how to do this and have searched the web for about 45 minute until I found your vid. Very well done and explained. I have a question: If I did make a pulling tool that got the shaft out does the snap ring come out with it ? BTW, it sounds to me you are Canadian.

    • @dproulx797
      @dproulx797  Před 5 lety +1

      You’re welcome and although I didn’t succeed in pulling the shaft out, I’m sure the snap ring would come with it because when you would try to insert the new shaft the old ring would just fall into the diff. The snap ring stops the shaft from moving out but not in. On the other note, Yes sir I am eh ;)

      @dproulx797  Před 5 lety

    • @jaycee1373
      @jaycee1373 Před 5 lety

      Thank you for the reply. I thought the purpose of your video was to show how to remove the intermediate shaft. Removing the snap ring as you described should negate the need for an axle shaft puller. Since the snap ring is what's keeping the shaft in the differential, once removed, the axle shaft should slip right out of the housing, no? Were you unable to remove the snap ring? You were so close! This video helped me out, so thanks again!

      dproulx797 I ended up taking my unit to the shop. On my 2005 Ram there was only a couple inches from the diff cover and part of the steering mechanism so I was really concerned if I would have any room. Also no hoist, was laying on my back. The shop mech apparently had issues with the shaft; they charged me an addition 1/2 hour labor.

It's just funny how you get the right year and it wants to give you videos of the wrong year. I'm leaving with no help at all.
