My favorite chalice dungeon enemy behavior is when a bloodsucker appears in a room you previously cleared, sucking on a corpse. It's a clever reuse of assets, it fits with the worldbuilding, and it makes the backtracking feel special.

    • @Boc_theSeamster
      @Boc_theSeamster Před 2 měsíci +58

It actually only ever happens when you kill an enemy with a riposte. And it's random on whether bloodsuckers will appear sucking blood of enemies you reposted or not.
(Edit): also in order for the bloodsuckers to spawn, you have to leave the room and walk back which basically unloads and reloads the room.

I always found it interesting how the chalice dungeons feature enemies that leaned more towards dark medieval fantasy rather than what we find in the main game.
It's also cool the see the many itteration of FromSoft enemies. A good number of those we see in the video can be linked back to some dark souls enemies, while some others like the Blood Letting Beast has a lot of similarities to the Guardian Ape in Sekiro.

The medieval-ness is to show how long the Hunt has been going on. The unhooded Yarhagul Headpiece also adds to this.

I'm fairly certain (though it could just be a rumor) that in alpha builds, the Chalice Dungeons were originally conceived as the remains of Boletaria from Demon's Souls. In the current game you can even spot some corpses wearing the Fluted Set

@@HHTwice i’d argue the dodge mechanic’s is it’s fundamentally worst quality being based on the direction your character’s facing as opposed to the actual direction you input. Framerate sucks sure, but dodging the opposite direction you intended to because the enemy your locked onto has the forward momentum of an F16 and flips your character 180 degrees is far more annoying.
That aside, as far as gameplay implementations go, the chalice dungeons suck hardest. Nobody likes having weapon progression tied to a tedious and boring grind coupled with RNG.

One of my favorite things about bloodborne is how a ton of the enemies you can see that they were human once. It really adds to the horror in a more subtle way since you constantly hear about how people are turning to beasts and see it obviously early on with the yarhnamites but then you see something like the scorpion or the hole digger which still has these very human attributes and see just how horrifying the beast plague really is. Genuinely think bloodborne has one of the worst worlds to live in purely because of the off chance of catching the beast plague. Plus the fact that anyone can be trapped in the hunters dream seemingly unwillingly in a lot of cases

the more i look at this design the more fascinated i am. whoever made this had a deep knowledge of zoology and a very, very twisted mind.
namely, the design incorporates many different animals in harmony-
firstly the sea cucumber, its body shape and the tentacle like protrusions are a clear lookalike. the way it just sits around exposed sideways on the floor is kind of unusual but is also characteristic of the sea cucumber. sea cucumbers are also unusual in that they dont have an exoskeleton of any type, just a somewhat leathery exterior, high toxicity, and the ability to shoot out their guts like our friend.
secondly a type of polychaete, possibly the blood worm, a variation on a very common and ancient body plan of a worm-like ambush predator that digs its way butt-first into the seabed, something that would match the title “hole digger”. some polychaetes that do this, such as the blood worm or bobbitt worm, have the ability to protrude its mouth quite far outwards in order to grab and eat large prey. these animals also sometimes secrete a lot of mucus for their burrows so are quite slimy, like our fellow here.
thirdly, a tetrapod. the sprawling gait of the creature is very similar to crocodiles that perform the same niche as tetrapods, and possessed the ability to walk backwards fast, sometimes just as quickly as forwards, something that matches this guy. like many amphibians, they also had no external bone plating and were slimy. additionally, the animal is shown to have more than 5 digits, something very rare in the animal kingdom but was known to occur frequently in tetrapods prior to the carboniferous period. also, im not so sure about this one, but both of the clips here show the hole digger in a tunnel near the water’s edge with their mouth pointing towards the water, and on an incline, a possible reference to the way the tetrapods adapted to life on on land and grabbed prey in the edge of the water to drag up onto land. some ancient tetrapods also adapted to digging burrows which would be another equivalency between tetrapods and this creature’s fat, mole-like body, short legs and presence in a burrow
and last but not least, of course like all fromsoft monstrosities, the thing was originally human, and has some of the regular features like having internal bones and fleshy skin (like our other animals on this list), a horrifically realistic spine, arms with human proportioned elbow and shoulder joints, and for its mouth that everts similarly to the bloodworm mentioned earlier, it has a prolapsing anus. the way that this creature swaps its head and anus ends at will further meshes the tetrapod back-and-forwards movement style with the way it looks when a blood worm (and a human anus, for that matter) everts and then sucks back in its mouth which is much thicker than the width of the worm’s actual head opening. this also kinda has some similarities with how the sea cucumbers spew out their guts, and how the worms dig backwards.
anyways ive been staring at this ugly thing for way too long. thanks for reading and keep supporting fromsoft devs because their creativity really is something else sometimes 👍

I don't want to nitpick, but I do feel the urge to point out that the Beast-Possessed Soul and the Abhorrent Beast do in fact appear outside of Chalice Dungeons. Admittedly it's somewhat easy to miss them, and they don't respawn when killed, but they're there all the same.

The funniest enemy "actually not showcased here" is that one guy hidden in hintertomb that is an amalgamation of the hooded guys and the normal guys and dies in one hit for some reason....
Also chalice have the best fromsoft slimes cause they actually have a fun moveset as opposed to just being a walking gel sponge with one attack
Lastly the giants... The 2 cannon giants in the poison swamp... I remember screaming a bit when i saw that sight
As for bosses the bloodletting beast is an amazing fight in both of its versions and of course who can forget the watchdog... We all love and hate that puppy its 2nd encounter is a git gud momment and i lover it
Also pthumerian elders are such a cool concept i wish they do a similar fight but a but more polished like you know more moves cause he really has a limited moveset despite the fact he can wield so many fire weapons
Lastly queen of yharnam is such a great fight with so many phases "the most phases in the entire Bloodborne" if you never done chalices do it for the queen she is worth the time

@@altarf2582 i know but the elders have their whole teleporting around thingy which is what I wanna see, a guy constantly teleporting around and summoning different weapons with each teleport it's such a great concept but well as I said their moveset are limited so it gets predictable... Imagine if they had morgots moveset how scary they would be your heart would clench at every teleport which fits Bloodborne perfectly

While I agree with the sentiment, I think that's actually the spike that would normally appear to attack the player, but because it's being viewed in isolation in whatever software this is, it's just appearing at the same position as the queen herself

Theory (though I don't know if anyone has postulated this before): The Loran Cleric and the Beast-Possesed Soul are both from Loran and have interesting lore implications on how the Loran viewed the Beast Plague. So first of all, I posit that both are related due to having very similar ram-like horns and both appearing in the Loran Chalice Dungeons. So what are the implications? I posit that similar to the Healing Church, the Loran had a priesthood/religious element when it came to the Old Blood. However, unlike the Healing Church and their predecessors the scholars of Byrgenwerth who viewed the Beast Plague from a somewhat scientific viewpoint and medicalized the Beast Plague the ancient Loran viewed it as a matter of demonic position. Hence the moniker of "Beast-Possesed Soul" rather than Beast Plagued or infected. I further theorize that the Loran clerics acted in a similar role to the Beast Hunters who rather than hunt attempted to exorcise the Beast "Spirit" from their countrymen. And like the Beast Hunters became Beast themselves over time.

Does anyone else have the feeling that the Chalice dungeons were a way to reuse already made enemies from an earlier build of the game's life cycle? It would explain why they seem to fleshed out and relatively complete.
